What an honor!
Lol!

What's even more comico-tragic is reading a Games magazine last year, which made a parody preview of Black Mesa and they actually indirectly proposed that the fans should gather money to pay-off the BM Devs as an "encouragement" in order for them to finish it faster...

How long do they take, usually...?!
How long is a piece of string

Its probably because of the sheer amount of mods for it, a few just get stuck in development due to people dropping out etc.

It has a great scene btw - for a 14 year old game it is remarkable that full game conversions are still being released at around one a month. Not to mention all the maps, individual units etc. Some of the mods are fantastic in scope, adding new sides, changing it to space settings and so on.

That's interesting indeed although I've never actually played the original Total Annihilation. I remember it was over hyped back in 1997, not sure if it ever picked up greatly.

Well it would seem that:

http://blackmesasource.com - updated website with random quotes and new background pics (refresh page to see new stuff).
Those random screen shots look great! But I doubt it is related with a release date. It probably means nothing.

And this page, which requests a pass…

Oh God, don't mention TA mods to me.
Being a TA mod player myself I've seen a fair few of them go down the drain....Synthetic Sentience...the total conversion mods....just look at the Boneyard section of TAUniverse. Having said that there are some active mods that really are five classes above the rest, mainly Excess and Excess II.
As for the over-hyping, it wasn't nearly as overhyped as Starcraft IMO. That's hit popularity worldwide and is still being sold in some stores, Total Annihilation on the other hand can only be found either pirated, at a Cash Converters store on by some online game purchase websites selling hacked versions with MP3 audio support (that's so dodgy you're better off with the disc). I own two copies myself, one I found from Cash Converters and one my mother's had for years (why she bought it I dont know).
Oh, and I must confess I pirated the expansions. They're just impossible to find legit for me.

Really though it's a good game. Ignore my fanboyish tendancies with it and just download it and try it some time. You'll find that in Skirmish the AI can be pretty lame but at least the difficulty curve for learning to use units is okay in Original TA. For a challenge, Excess II is the way to go - I always make jokes about the AI being in Marijuana mode for a reason.

On topic now, and I think Raiden Fighters Aces will beat this as being the #1 Vapourware, though Steam users and Half-Life fans will probably disagree with me, and fair enough. :P

It's good to see the latest remake of this original game back in '98. I played this game back during my teenage days and it looks enjoyable, even if it's hard to play. (I used savestates actually here)

So you reckon I give a try the very 1st original TA then? I've never played any of them you see, let alone the mods...
Can the 1st be played in Windows or DOS only, so I'll need to setup DosBox emu?

As for Raiden Fighters Aces... why vaporware, wasn't it released for the Xbox360 some time ago?

Yeah well you'll probably need to wait for quite some time, until this mod gets released and relive your childhood... ;)

TA is a Windows 95 application, no DOS-anything required. And in my experience it runs just fine on almost any instance of Windows, and the few problems I'm aware of with it are trivial. Playing the original TA is definitely the way to go, though it may take some time for you to adjust to it since things are somewhat different from mainstream RTS games (think Supreme Commander but faster still and more terrain access and you get a reasonable idea). Just remember that mods generally require at least the Core Contingency expansion which consist of a couple of extra files.

RFA was released in Japan and US, but the PAL release has yet to happen. Too much incompetence in the publishers/distributors so far.
