So which is the best ?

Post by Enoch »

Hi, i have just recently started playing SHMUPS again. Played a few of the classics on MAME and then started looking for something better and came accross doujin shmups in particular top down/vertical shmups. I have played Reflex which was good and also Alltynex second. I just checked out Steam to see if there were any indie shmups there and saw Razor 2 Hidden skies but i have read bad reviews of it although the visuals do look awesome.

My question is What is, in your opinion the best vertical/top down view shmup there is in the last 10 years for the PC platform be it indie/doujin/freeware/published?

Thanks looking forward to your replys.

:)

Lots of folks are very fond of Crimzon Clover, a well made indie game that combines elements of DoDonPachi DOJ and Layer Section, among other games, into a superbly executed vertical scroller.

Best stuff on MAME is better than the stuff released in the last 10 years from what I played, unfortunately.
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

Sorry, can we lock this silly stuff as well as the other "favorites"/"which is best" threads that have recently been on the main page of Shmups Chat?

Make sure you get the latest version of mame or shmupmame as Cave's PGM shmups have just been emulated, plus lots of other good shit on the emulator aswell. Plus theres other shmups on console emulators like ps1 and ps2

Since you like to buy PC shmups, ild recommend Crimson Clover aswell plus Zen ichi, (just watch the 20 best doujin games vid on YT) plus the freeware Hydorah. Apart fom geometry wars clones Steam atm has no decent shmups fortunatly you can get some english localised doujin games on Direct Drive http://www.direct2drive.co.uk/495/8044/ ... o-Download Published by Curious Factory and Rockin Andriod.

If havnt already get yourself a 360 prefrably a Japanese model as thats where all the new comercial shmups are. If you have a PAL or US 360 you can still get a handfull of localised or region free shmups though

Warning Forever is worth a go.
As for NAOMI games, most of them came out for the Dreamcast too (Dreamcast emulation on the PC is probably in a better shape than NAOMI emulation on MAME) as arcade-perfect ports, sometimes with additional features. You'll still need a BIOS, though.

Hello. 8)

Check the site in my sig as I sell doujin games and have videos for each that I offer. You can also find many free games as well as demo soft in the section titled "Free Soft / Demos". Let me know if you have any questions. Yeah, yeah - I know... I never miss an opportunity for self promotion. While I agree with captpain that these "whats the best / favorite" threads should be locked, since it's already here the in my opinion the best / my favorites include:

Blue Wish Resurrection Plus
Crimzon Clover
Warning Forever
Zillion Beatz
Bike Banditz
Murasame Kusogame Archives Vol. 2 (3-in-1!)
Prizhm.

Also, make sure to play Raiden III on a PC rather than PS2 (unless you own a CRT TV but no CRT monitor, which might tip the balance slightly in favour of the PS2 version).

Still doujin. He was pointing out that the name of the anthology (Murasame Shit Game Archives) clashes with the theme of this thread.

Murasame has a weird sense of humor.

Ahh. I see. I was focused more on the [indie game] quote than the kusogame.. I blame it on the stress of the CONSTANT-F$*@-EARTHQUAKES going on over here... We just had another.. :(

Is it just me who's not used to playing shmups on PC, or does the bullet dodging in Crimzon Clover feel a bit off? I feel like my ship is sliding all over the place (like if there's a delay or deceleration time/inertia), or the hitbox is weirdly off (even though it's extremely small). I find myself "scared" of diving inbetween bullets I would normally never have a problem with on console, and it feels like there's always an extra risk of getting hit even when taking care. It's difficult to explain.

Otherwise, Crimzon Clover TOTALLY blew me away. The bullet patterns do get a bit repetitive compared to Cave games, but holy shit, everything is perfect bullet hell recipe and the production quality is top notch! The game launching with a cheap ripoff of Robert Miles' Children (even cheaper than the one in Garou :D) takes me away from the very first frame.

Did you turn off vertical sync in the options when you start up the game? Here's a translation of the start-menu, the japanese one corresponds with this one:

Image

I experienced the same as you described above when I had vertical sync on... It was like the ship was gliding on ice or something like that. After turning v-sync off, the controls were spot-on, very precise and the same as I am used from games on the box like mushihimesama Futari.

Thanks! Sound like that's exactly my problem! I'll check it out when I get back home today.

Can't wait to play this game again PROPERLY. Maybe I'll actually be able to beat the demo now. :)

You'll definetely be able to if input-lag has been your problem. For me, the difference between v-sync on and off was immense... As I said, with v-syng on, the input lag was like my ship was iceskating... Yuckie...

With v-sync off, I have a little bit of screen-tear (only noticeable at the beginning of the game), but the controls are just spot-on, the ship does exactly what I want it to do. So enjoy, it's almost like a fresh game.

Yeah, I meant including a kusogame in a list of best games was confusing. Isn't it the point that kusogames are supposed to be "kuso" on some level =P? I'm guessing maybe the specific game in question refers to itself as a kusogame more in the ironic, self-deprecating sense.

Just booted up Crimzon Clover again, and the Vsync option isn't there (only one for full screen and 32 bit graphics) - is it impossible to turn it off in the demo version, or?

Refraining from mentioning that series because I know what will happen and it's too obvious anyway, I'm going to recommend fantastic little freeware Twin Seeds. Quite possibly my favourite freeware game of all time.
My 1CCs so I can find the list easier myself
