Just installed Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate on my Macbook. When I set the resolution to 640 x 480 on my external monitor the picture takes up only half the area. Same problem with the built in screen. Is there any way to set it up proper for the SLG and MAME?

there's a setting in the graphics driver which should solve this. The graphics card still reads the display's native resolution and outputs this particular resolution....

Has anyone tried one of the cheap composite/s-video to VGA adapters with the SLG3000? How much worse would they be than an XRGB3 or DVDO Edge with 240p inputs?

Alternatively, is there a better way to inexpensively use composite/s-video with the SLG? Say, to convert to component and then into the CGA-VGA scaler? I'm aware of the Entech CVSI-1 from reading Fudoh's site, but I've never actually found one for sale anywhere, so I doubt it'd be cheap if it does show up.

I know RGB would be vastly better, but I'm not confident in my ability to mod my NES or N64... Plus RGB modding a NES would result in an inaccurate (or at least un-nostalgic :P) palette even if I didn't botch it.

Fagin's question was excellent as it answered your question directly. I made the (false) assumption that picture quality and stability would be more important...I feel silly now :oops:

240P->XRGB-3->Edge->4x2 matrix->DLP HDTV
480i/P->YPbPrselect-^ . . ^ . . V-->hdmi2vga->Super Emotia->Tate CRT SDTV

Fagin showed me some tips for my mame to 1080P LCD Display that may be useful to you on page 17 of this thread.
I even took some pictures to show the problem I was having. Read over it and see if it helps you.
He put the .ini settings for Mame in bold that you want to pay special attention to.

yep, only the top plate is clear. This way all attention is drawn to the beautiful little PCB and the unavoidable scratches which will show up in time on the bottom side of the bottom plate are not visible.

Hey all. New to the forum. I'm really interested in this device. My problem is that my 1080p plasma (Pioneer 111fd) only accepts up to 1366x768 on the VGA port. It's a really annoying issue, but luckily the TV has plenty of HDMI ports. So in order to use the SLG3000 I'd need to convert whatever console I'm playing to VGA first and then come out of the SLG 3000 and convert back to HDMI so that I can keep a native 1080p signal going into my plasma.

Can anyone recommend a device for going VGA to HDMI? Will it even work? Seems like I'm gonna have to build a whole new rats nest of wires for this... :mrgreen:

and why's that important to you ? The SLG3000 works best at 480p input (and output of course). Everything else gives you tiny black stripes across the screen, but nothing which resembles real CRT scanlines. So, unless your Pio is unable to properly upscale 480p to 1080p, I would suggest that you simply feed it 480p via VGA.

If your VGA port is occupied, you can look out for a Gefen VGA to DVI (or HDMI) Scaler Plus. They are sometimes available for less than $100 and they do a nice job of upscaling anything VGA to 1080p DVI/HDMI. But even with such a device, you should keep the source at 480p and then just have the "scanlined" 480p image upscaled to 1080p.

I would suggest the last thing you want to do is keep to a 1080p signal. You need to feed the SLG 640x480 and take the output from that of the same res to your TV. Your TV will then scale as it sees fit.

Thanks for setting me straight on wanting to run 480p through the device. So I'd want the SLG 3000 to go in the line before my older consoles hit the DVDO Edge I'm considering purchasing. I'll have to play around with the setup in my head some more. I have a lot of consoles I'd like to run through the SLG.

^^Is your TV terrible at scaling from 480p upwards to its native resolution (slow? ringing?) ?
TV sets nowadays seem to have very few problems scaling the picture once you deliver it already deinterlaced, so you really might want to check out first if it works for you to have the SLG as end-device, just before the TV's RGBHV input.

Lag isn't really a problem if the TV is put in game mode. There is some ringing around objects and text. I've considered getting an XRGB3 also. I'm just trying to get the best possible picture out of the 8 and 16bit era consoles. Probably would be better off just getting a nice CRT instead....haha.

Mine just arrived today and it is awesome paired with my psp and the Lenking PSP converter with the converter outputting at 1280x768 and dip 4 and 5 set to off on the slg3000. Playing that on my 32 inch sharp aquos lcd makes it feel like the psp was designed as a home console.

My experience with my 360 wasn't quite as good. I have my japanese 360 next to my pc attached to a Zalmon Trimon 22 inch lcd monitor. The great thing about the monitor it that I can rotate it easily on it's stand, but at 640x480 I get a moire pattern on the screen with either dip 4 on and 5 off, or the other way around. I wonder if the problem is in my monitor and its handling of the signal. When I play mame outputting from the dvi connection on my pc set to the monitor's native 1600x1050 resolution I don't get that moire pattern, so I assume it must be my monitor. does that sound correct?

Sounds like uneven scaling on the part of your monitor. Emphatic has a few shots with moire patterns some pages back. 480p and 720p scanlines look perfect scaled on 1080p native monitors. Monitors with native PC resolutions are going to be hit or miss.

Hey Winni.

What pin(s) in the VGA cable is used to power the SLG3000?

If you do an internal VGA mod on a Dreamcast which outputs only R,G,B,H,V and Ground would that be able to power it? I think I read somewhere that the SLG3000 was powered by the sync signal...?

^I can confirm that the SLG has no power-on problems with just the lines you mentioned earlier and most likely uses one of the two sync pins for power; I'm using a self-built RGBHV-out addon from the Holo to the SLG and just used the R,G,B,H,V and Ground pins on a D-Sub connector. Works without a problem.

Same here. I use BNC breakouts before the SLG and it works fine. No worries....
