We had it in Casino Arcade in London for a while. It's so brutal to the player, but it's daunting in a way that makes it seem awesome cool.

The audio is indeed great - it's just hard to get a chance to hear it!

Is that original art?
I really really really miss playing tatsujin 2 in your arcade for sure! I was playing it a fair amount this time last year but then you took both tatsujin and dogyyun away -

Will you be getting it back?

I'd love to get my hands on the PCB one day.

Yet another post without a pic, though maybe I'll get a chance to take a pic this weekend:

Surprised to find I'm digging Raystorm, despite passing on this PCB many times in the past. I'm also building an affinity for Visco shmups.

Yep, that Taito FX-1B powered (precursor to the Taito G-Net arcade motherboard) Raystorm PCB is quite a delight to play/own...much better than the later released PSX incarnation IMO. Runs great with that silky smooth arcade-spec 60fps framerate indeed. Tis a shame that none of my local arcades did ever get a Raystorm PCB for the local arcade gamers to check out/play. The beautiful (and larger than life) Working Designs PSX Raystorm poster proudly hangs up on the wall to compliment my barebones Raystorm PCB.

Zuntata sure knows how to craft some beautiful BGM tunes when the RS PCB is played on a stereo equipped candy cab & in legendary 44.1kHz CD quality output! It's all cool to gain access to the Operator's Menu screen option and just listen to the various RS BGM tunes from time to time.

Thanks PCEFX! for the tip on BG tunes in the operator menu. Definitely top shelf in the music department!

Actually so is the BGM playing at 32khz... but it sure sounds good anyway :)

I recently picked up a Progear USA version.

Image

I took it apart to change the battery, and I noticed it doesn't have the usual daughter board with CPS3 memory.

Anyone know where I can get a replacement label?

That makes no sense. Sounds like a conversion?

I think Spectre on AO used to do sticker reprints a while back, but I could be remembering that wrongly.

It looks like it says CP System 1 on the serial label , is that normal for US boards ?

It says CPS II, just the "II" are really close together.

Also if it was a conversion, wouldn't you see the "Phoenix" bios when booting?

Not if someone has been cheeky.

I had my Progear opened for a battery change last Monday and it has a set of simms on a second tier above the main PCB which doesn't appear to be in the pic above.

Do a rom test and see if the program roms come up 'NG' (not good).

Can you elaborate... Who is DeLeo?
kernow wrote:Do a rom test and see if the program roms come up 'NG' (not good).
It passes the all of the rom tests. In fact, Razoola posted in the neo-geo thread "Something you can look for to detect a phoenixed game thats had the splash screen removed is to go into test mode and do the memory check. Firstly the phoenix edition changes the test to check the entire program ROM space and not 1 byte in every 4096. This means on most games (not all however) the EPROM test takes a few seconds for each program ROM. So if you see that then its a good indicator its a modified phoenix edition, the test for the program ROMs is almost instant with the original games."

On this board it takes about 12 seconds to run through all of the tests (Work RAM, CPS RAM, OBJECT RAM, SOUND RAM, EEP ROM, PROGRAM ROM 0 and 1). But when it checks PROGRAM ROM 0 and PROGRAM ROM 1, it is almost instant as Razoola states.

I asked about it on arcadeotaku and neo-geo. Some of the things I found out are:
- most of the legit US Progear boards do not have the daughter board
- the US Progear boards have eproms instead of mask roms
- the handwritten eprom labels aren't uncommon on the later games because of the low production runs

If it's a bootleg conversion, it's a very elaborate one. They would've had to have access to the Capcom warranty stickers too. I had to cut two of these Capcom warranty stickers to access the security bolts to open it up:

You can see that it leaves silver marking behind when you try to peal them.

When I saw that Dave K. got this I had to fire it up in MAME for a quick test. It's clearly not for everyone this game. :|

Yeah, I recall firing up Earth Joker on Raine emu back in the day to see how it played...it's definitely not everyone's "cup of tea" in regards to shmups.

Cool find there, Dave K.

Same with Galmedes, also on F2 hardware, and also from Visco (1992).
undamned wrote:Wasn't this the game that got ported to Saturn and everyone said was a real turd?
 That was Planet Joker, totally different game.

And thus sealing its fate as a hidden gem, if only in my mind. Try Galmedes for more non-traditional playing style.
