Let's not turn this into an autofire debate topic. Cave games have autofire by default since forever.

Mushi is different as people hacked the circuits of the PCB to get precise frequencies beneficial for scoring. In fact the PS2 versions tries to replicate that behavior with adjustable autofire rates. With those frequencies+tapping the no-autofire button it was possible to down some bosses quickly or bypass some patterns, which was vital in ultra mode, especially for the TLB. Back when I was interested in the game (which is a long time ago) nobody had beaten the TLB without autofire hacks. I'm just wondering if someone did it since.

I think that's the hardest boss in a non doujin shmup.

Anyway it seems everyone forgot about the original post which compares r-type to modern bullet hell games. Which is basically comparing apples and oranges. I'm gonna pretend I forgot it too.

But that doesn't really help much, if you're over the missile select then you're only closer to the main guns, and have less time to escape from being shot in the face. And if it brings the arms forward, then they are conveniently over said missile select and you'll crash :).
Friendly counterargument :)

In addition to nullifying the arm lasers, this strat lets you end the fight really quickly (note the option placement). I'm now positive that the main laser volleys come at set times; you can memorize and take advantage of the brief lulls in firing. The hands will get uncomfortably close, but this beats having to dodge massive hitbox lasers for a minute.
You could always try to hide and time that bastard out.

OH WAIT FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU---
That entrapment attack is hilarious. It's the sort of cheap death you'd expect to find in a Space Quest game or a Choose Your Own Adventure book.

Dude, weak.........I spent a whole year doing it wrong . Ah well, at least I beat it so I don't have to do it ever again :).

Maybe someone should develop a text adventure or a Shadowgate type of game with a shmup theme 8).

BOSS APPROACHING. WHAT DO YOU DO?
>ATTACK FROM ABOVE
YOU HAVE RUN OUT OF TORCHES.
YOU CAN NO LONGER SEE YOUR CONTROL PANEL.
YOU ACCIDENTLY PRESS THE SELF DESTRUCT BUTTON.
YOU ARE DEAD. INSERT COIN TO CONTINUE.

I'd love to see someone take the last boss of Verytex head on. I have my doubts that it can actually be done...
I could only beat it using the top corner exploit (which to my credit I figured out on my own)

I wanted to say that I love Gynoug and the Cho Aniki games, but that sort of gives the "wrong impression".

Yeah, most of Gynoug's art is actually nowhere near that awesome. :[

The general problem with Gynoug is all the time between bosses. Those enemies are completely uninspired and the stages drag on forever. Convert the game to a boss run, and it would instantly be a way better game for the visuals alone.

Cave should hire the guy who did the art for these games, if only for one single retardedly absurd game.

Agreed - the regular enemies are laughable, and the stages themselves aren't all that great either. Most of the bosses, like the ones already posted, are show-stoppingly gruesome and anguished-looking. My favourite is
the "fossilised foetus" last one, with its heavenly backdrop.

I've long imagined an Undead Line-styled vert featuring Valtiel from Silent Hill 3 scrambling about filthy stone floors taking down popcorn waves of SH3-esque gristle beasts, before confronting unspeakable boss monstrosities like good ol' Gynoug Dickman up there!

I think we hit an untapped potential here fit for the "armchair developer" thread. There just aren't enough macabre/horror themed shoot'em ups out there.

For the record, Gynoug had the same sprite artist as the Cho Aniki games. Not surprising at all.

Try looking around Kaiser's YouTube page, I know he was having a crack at it some time ago and while I dont think he did it he might've linked to someone who did.

The Real Battle Phase 2 "fake" boss is one of the most aggravating baddies I've ever faced. The one attack with the four spinning bullet streams and loads of aimed destructible bullet spreads have got to be one of the most classic examples of how destructible bullets can actually be dangerous. And how!

In other news Black Heart Mk-II makes me rage hard as well, but I have a hard enough time reaching the boss in the first place that I can't really say much about why he does. Ignorance is sort of blissful, you know.

For my serious input, I gotta say it's GwangeDash's TLB, M.A.D. When not using Hibachi v1 against it the damn thing's impossible. No joke.
Oh, and forget Maniac and Death Label.

I'm ready to agree, though I've never seen it, because the fift boss would be the second biggest asshole around.

Spoiler: this guy cheats. Check out his other Youtube runs. All 1000+ of them are perfect runs. Some of them even have invincibility on when he doesn't feel like bothering with tool assistance.

IIRC Zatsuza has already been 2-missed ( since you can glitch the opener and some other attacks, ha ha ) . Sure, hard, but I am pretty sure you can find harder from somewhere else.

Cirno of course. Way too many bullets moving way too fast in fiendish patterns. A really difficult boss.
Other than that I'd give a clichéed answer and say Mushi Futari Ultra Larsa. Followed up by DOJ Hibachi.
Evacaneer Doom should be mentioned too but it wouldn't be my pick since it has one attack I can do unlike the others.
Bananamatic wrote:Gigafacer anyone? That thing is so evil it makes superplayers die 2 times.
Bah, that's only because HFD hasn't played it. :P
Its odd how nobody performs well on that thing. Its not like its easy or anything but the projectile count is pretty low and they aren't that fast either. Given that there is people who can dodge DFK Hibachi's final attack properly, I'd say its just Dimahoo that doesn't have enough attention.

I wonder if anyone can clear Tsukiko's final form from Shikigami 3 without dying.
She has an AOE scream that's an instant kill.
