death and atheism
Being an atheist when someone you love dies is really really...horrible.

Re: death and atheism
I wish I had something positive to say, but alas, I think you're right. Shit/ life happens. Watch some Trailer Park Boys, maybe that helps.
Re: death and atheism
Sorry for your loss.
There are some positive ways you can deal, though. If they had any causes you could donate some money or time. If they died of some illness, maybe donate to medical research.
Or try to help fill any hole they left in general.
Can bring people closer together.
Think of some practical ways you can keep the life they left behind going, if only a little.
Understanding that this is all you get can encourage people to actually do something worthwhile.
EDIT:
Man, you're not kidding

Re: death and atheism
Yes, it is something that plagues all of us Atheists, but at the same time it is the fate we have also accepted for ourselves one day soon.

Re: death and atheism
Honestly I think it plagues everyone the same. It's not like death of a loved one is easy on anyone, and even those who believe in an afterlife are plagued with uncertainty. Those who believe this is all there is know that person's suffering is over with. The hardest part is always dealing with your own loss, and that doesn't change regardless of what you believe.

I didn't find it so bad.evil_ash_xero wrote:Being an atheist when someone you love dies is really really...horrible.
Or rather I don't think it was any worse for being an atheist.
Re: death and atheism
I'm sorry to hear of your loss.
Having someone die is always horrible, no matter what your beliefs are.
However, i do like the idea of my decomposing body acting as a fertilizer,
thus feeding some plants which get introduced into a food-chain again.
So basically you "live" in every plant, animal or human that is part of that new food-chain.

Re: death and atheism
Yeah...I mean, it's all going to be fairly relative, even if beliefs are the same. People all take death differently, and regardless of how you take it, it's always going to hurt. I'm sorry for your loss; I wish the best for you and your family.

Re: death and atheism
Please don't take this the wrong way. I'm not an athiest, nor am I a deeply, or even mildly religious person either (i'm pretty ambivalent towards both sides..in other words I don't give a shit who is "up there" or if there is even anyone there at all), but I don't think a certain personal stance or belief can (or should) make that hurt anymore harder to take than it already is. When I was younger, in church we were told to mourn for those who have not repented for their sins before death as they will be damned to the lake of fire and yadda yadda yadda, but fuck all that extra shit, I don't care where they're headed to, i'm sad cause they ain't here anymore-thats all. But i'm only speaking for myself here. I hope things brighten up for you, though. Play some CAVE shmups and be easy, man.
