Movies you've just watched

On a plane to Montreal, I watched the amazing documentary Marwencol, about a guy recovering from an violent attack outside a bar that wipes his memory entirely. He ends up building a 1:6 scale model of a fictionalised Belgian WWII town called Marwencol in his back garden as some kind of self-administrated therapy, and acting out a fantasy life for himself through the dolls that live in the town, taking beautiful photos of the stories he creates for the towns folk. The star is a troubled but likable man with a talent for realistic model posing, and it's an amazing story - I highly recommended it. The sets he creates are kind of wonky, but the love and effort he puts into them, and his knack for positioning the models is fantastic.

Watched Repo Men this weekend. Its a story seen a million times before, but what this movie really has going for it is the special effets. holy shit, I've seen nothing like it.

Vincere (2009) by Marco Bellocchio

Marco Bellocchio's 'Vincere' is a dark and powerful film that follows Benito Mussolini's rise to power through the eyes of his first wife, Ida Dalser, who was seduced and then betrayed by Mussolini as he abandoned her and their son on his way to becoming Italy's dictator, ultimately disavowing any knowledge of their existence. The film starts with a stylish and operatic punch as a young Mussolini (played by Filippo Timi) veers away from socialism to form the National Fascist Party, the narrative speeding through historical events at a steady pace for the first half hour, interposed with newsreel headlines and archive footage projected on screen in a manner reminiscent of Lars Von Trier's 'Europa'.

Abruptly the film shifts focus to Ida Dalser (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) as she is forcibly separated first from Mussolini, then from her own son and finally from the outside world as Mussolini attempts to cover up any trace of their marriage and has Dalser committed to an insane asylum. Not only does this present a shift of perspective, but it's a stark shift in the film's tone too. Gone are the stylish and grandiose themes of revolution, seduction and upheaval, replaced by a tragic and startling performance from Mezzogiorno as her character descends further into mental illness.

Filippo Timi provides a frenzied and forceful portrayal of both 'Il Duce' and the adult version of the dictator's unrequited son, but it's Giovanna Mezzogiorno's career defining performance that steals the show, showing Dalser as strong, resilient and somewhat naive in the outset, harrowed, resigned and on the very brink by the film's close. Mezzogiorno's role is somewhat allegorical of the film as a whole, as like Italian society Dalser too was seduced and subsequently betrayed by the charm of the fierce and intelligent Mussolini. Ultimately with 'Vincere' Bellocchio and his lead actors present a mature and thought provoking look at one of the most clouded stories of Fascist Italy's past with an uncanny sense of style and dramatic flair, punctuated by the film's wonderful classical score. Remarkable.

Watched 'Touching the void', which is really just a documentary about how a mountain climber manages to make a 20K foot descent with a broken leg after being left for dead. Visuals were absolutely amazing, and I found myself glued to my seat, riddled with anxiety the whole way. Of course, you know the guy will live the whole film, but it amost makes it more harrowing, since it never seems like there is anyway he'll survive.

Of course I love mountain hiking, and occasionally do a bit of scrambling, getting myself into a mildly stupid situations, but nothing these guys wouldn't laugh at. Honestly I was terrified thoughout quite a bit of this. I can see where other people would be indifferent if they either have no experience, or do but don't find situations like this terrifying, but that tiny bit of association made my viewing of it a lot more intense!

Harry Dean Stanton is one of my favorite actors. I saw Alien a couple days ago for the first time. I was pissed that his character had such a small role and died almost immediately. Ultimately, that movie (ALien) left me disappointed. It was a good popcorn flick and all, but really I was expecting more. If anyone has seen it: is the sequel Aliens better, worse, or about the same?

The sequel is better but different; a lot more action and a lot more aliens. If you were disappointed with the first film, you will probably enjoy this one more.

The Kings Speech - I liked it.. Seemed rather interesting and acted very well.

Finally watched "Despicable Me" w/ the wife. I never would have guessed it was Steve Carell doing the voice for the main character, just by listening. It's a cute story of a villain trying to prove himself the greatest villain, but finds that love is of far greater value than being notorious. I enjoyed the movie as a whole, but I also think I liked it because his minions are very reminiscent of the kobuns/servebots from the Megaman Legends games

The Crow - German Blu ray

Outside of Japan this is the only worthy version to get and its half the price of the Japanese version. The German version comes in a nice black steelbook



Image is a bit so so, not up to the usual blu ray standards. I'd expect its better than the UK version which is only 1080i. Great movie though. I think the US version will get a release sometime in 2011.

Its not out yet. June 27. UK only. Will retain the 192khz soundtrack the US version has. Region compatibility unknown. I'm a bit of a steelbook freak, I have probably a 100 by now in blu ray format. If you want to see more I can link to pics.

Just watched True Grit. The Coen's are such consummate filmmakers I don't think they can ever really make a 'bad' film per se. I really liked True Grit, and I always like a good western.

In my world, it was a December movie.

Watching Bambi on Blu Ray; fucking awesome! I'm past the point of trying to apologize for this movie. It works well on a number of levels assuming you aren't completely cold hearted, and has some of Disney studio's best animation. This along with Snow White are Disney's two films which must be watched by any serious animation buff and should be required viewing for anyone studying animation. I'm not convinced on the blu ray medium as a whole, but it is worth it for Bambi alone! At a few points found myself getting right up to the screen to study some of the multi-plane camera work. Damn!

Akira - Haven't watched this in something close to 11 years? Think its time for a rewatch. I kind of fell off the anime waggon about 8 years ago. Last thing I watched was Ghost in the Shell 2

True Grit is also on my list, so I will probably watch that real soon. Coen Bros. do amazing work. I really really like No Country for Old Men.
