So it's been nearly a week since the game's release. I bought the game new (Collector's edition) because I thought it would be one of grandest experiences this year. Boy.... was I grandly dissapointed. if I bought the game for single player alone, it would be my worst buy ever. Multiplayer saves it... except not really. MP is a fun addition but it doesn't change the fact that the core game sucks.
Let me point out why game sucks... i'll do it in points:
- The SP is extremely short. I beat it in less than 6 hours on Normal difficulty... that sounds like a sad joke because it took me 8-9 hours to beat Killzone 2.
- The story-writing is fucking terrible. There are lots of random characters which are there for sake of existing, super-cheesy dialogue, the main villain is nowhere as threathening as Visari. And of course the fucking terrible ending. It ends with a stupid cliffhanger, imagine this, you press a button, something unexpected happens and the credits roll right away. No ending dialogue, or anything. You press a fucking button to win the game and have a NES-level ending. Forgot to mention one thing, there are tons of continuity errors. Most baffling one was when you beat "That weapon company's" level and after the cutscene, you suddenly appear in a Helghast snowmobile out of nowhere.
- Did I mention the ending is fucking terrible?
- People looking for a challenge, don't bother. Not only Helghast AI feels dumbed down but their health is increased, for the sake for increasing it. To cater to the COD crowd. Even my friends who beat K3 on Elite, said it was way way dumbed down compared to K2's elite.
Now as for the multiplayer portion of the game which I have played for a while.
- It's pretty damn unbalanced, anyone with upgraded weaponry basically always wins. And despite there are various classes, the differences between them are minor. Like medic who has insane firepower.... which is more of an attribute in points than healing teammates.
- It caters to the COD crowd with all those killstreak bonuses and stuff. PLUS fucking annoying flash points on center of screen whether you doa nything.
I can't really comment more on MP because I would need to put in more time. But honestly, what the fuck Sony and Guerilla Games? Catering to casuals and thinking the game will sell like COD. Because it will have COD-like campaign and multiplayer? I'll say one thing, fuck you.
Lesson being kids, never get games at launch, even if they look good on cover/trailers/gameplay videos. No game is really worth it. Unless it's damn lengthy/replayable. I have bought a bunch of PS3 games on launch before (Uncharted 2, Resistance 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2, God of War III). However none of them dissapointed me as much as this COD-like bullshit. Rant over and out.

Killzone has always had terrible dialogue and trite macho scriptwriting, it's also always had static gunbattles and enemies who behave like whack-a-mole rodents that are impervious to bullets.
Personally, I don't buy the 'Killzone is different' excuse oft thrown around like it means something - it just doesn't play very well. I haven't played to the end of K3, and based on what you said, I probably won't bother now, but for what it's worth I find the actual combat experience to be the most enjoyable in a Killzone yet. I like being able to actually kill enemies without taking 50 meter pot shots, and I think the freeing up of the game is a marked improvement. It finally has fluidity. First time I ripped off a cannon mount Halo style and walked into that old library and started spraying bullets, glass and brick all over the place it felt about right. I'm not fussy if a game (or anything) draws influence from something else if it turns out to be an improvement.
What it still doesn't have is much character, which always baffles me considering the incredible visuals, and it's a very 'sectioned' affair, with cutscenes bookending small arenas of play. Most of the set-pieces seem to happen in the cutscenes, although the mech riding is pretty cool.

Always hated the franchise. No jump button in Killzone 1?! No decent singleplayer in Killzone 2/3? Well, I've bought Killzone 2 for MP only, but I still have NO FUCKING OPPORTUNITY to try it out, and the fact that Killzone 3 is out, means that everybody's already starting to give no shit about 2
Fuck this, I'd better play my Unreal Tournament...

In an alternate universal, Soldier Blade II has already been crafted by Hudson Soft and Compile with proper tate this time around (c) PC Engine Fan X!

Yeah, not a fan of this franchise at all. If i want to play a multiplayer FPS with intentions of being competitively balanced, I'm going to play CoD. There's no competing with it, and I question the wisdom of the myriad companies who keep trying and failing to do so.
The only games I buy at launch these days are the Forza games. They're always awesome, and the online community is great.

I thought Killzone 2 played and handled like shit so I was going to stay away from this one anyway, but thanks to the OP for making it a done deal.

I didn't get to play KZ1 but the sequel is awesome if you ask me. Looking forward to try out the third game, despite Kaiser's rant.

Meh can't please everyone. I loved the first two, the sequel especially before the control patch. I've got my eye set on the new bundle with KZ3. Also, 'competitively balanced' and COD should never ever be used together in the same sentence.

You're not wrong there. However, this one doesn't play or handle like shit, it's quite an improvement. Surprised me.Snake wrote:I thought Killzone 2 played and handled like shit so I was going to stay away from this one anyway
Dunno if I can be bothered to finish it though.

If you want to get into, there's really no such thing as "balance" in FPS, because everyone has access to the same equipment (eventually,) and at the end of the day, your equipment makes far less of an impact on how well you do than most players would like to believe. A good player can take the basic assault rifle that's available at level 1 and murder a team full of level 50s with G11s and China Lakes.mortified_penguin wrote:Meh can't please everyone. What I meant is that it's biased towards competitive play by design. The design of the CoD franchise is geared towards people who want to play competitively.

I enjoyed Killzone 3, not a HUGE fan or anything. But the single player had some great graphics and set pieces and was constantly pushing me into new things to do and locals that actually looked different from one another. I enjoy the sci-fi theme as well. I had alot of fun with it. I never bother much with the multi-player though, in any game like this. I have been known to play a few rounds of *gasp* halo 3 and reach multi-player from time to time.
COD never did anything for me with it's documentary army theme. I was never into sterile army games before or even after I was in the army. I always needed something a little more in the mix, just like Gran Turismo... I prefer arcade racers to simulators.
The move support works SHOCKINGLY well in this. I played through the whole thing with it and preferred to use it. Had to tweak it a bit but I had no issues adapting to it.
While a good story in a game is great... if the game is fun I could care less. Vanquish and Bayonetta are good examples; the cut scenes are are fun to watch at most but they ain't Shakespeare either but I LOVE those 2 games. I am a sucker for a game that makes me feel like I am constantly going to new looking places and doing new things.
I think saying this game SUCKS is a bit extreme, that new turock on the 360... now that is a game that you would say SUCKS. I don't like COD but I don't think it sucks for example.
I haven't touched the online modes ONCE though.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
