Hardest boss
So last night I was at my frieds house and play some Super R-type on the SNES and I notice the samething I'd notice last week when I beat last resort...The bosses don't seem that hard. And I thought that is kinda weird considering the so called "hardest boss ever" Queen Larsa is from a shmup game... So I(who haven't played that many shmups) where wondering if you(who've played them all) think most bosses are easy to beat i shmups or just horzontal shmups? Is there any competion for Queen Larsa?

Re: Hardest boss
NO THE HARDEST VIDEO GAME BOSS EVER IS EXACTLY THAT AAAAAAAA

Actually I'd say Battle Bakraid's final boss is pretty damn insane. Some of the bosses in Thunder Force IV are just plain evil too.
Really it depends on the game and difficulty mode. First level bosses are generally easy in my opinion, though I gotta say I dont play much hori games besides Thunder Force.

Gofer is the strongest boss.
Re: Hardest boss
First thing to immediately come in mind: Rezon's fourth boss.
The easiest way to clear it is with the red weapon. The fourth stage doesn't have that weapon, so you better not die there if you have it. No bombs to help you, neither any instant respawns upon death. Without the red weapon that boss will be one hell of a fight.

Re: Hardest boss
I guess with R-Type, the bosses need to be fairly reasonable because you have to beat it in one life or you get sent back to a checkpoint when you die. Whereas with something like Bakraid or DoDonPachi you can reach the boss with several lives and tons of bombs and you can maybe afford to lose a life and still beat it.

I don't know, some R-Type bosses are real dicks. The stage 4 and 5 bosses from the second game come to mind.DocHauser wrote:I guess with R-Type, the bosses need to be fairly reasonable because you have to beat it in one life or you get sent back to a checkpoint when you die.

Re: Hardest boss
I don't have a lot of experience with tough bosses. Shit, stage 3 boss in Mushi Futari hands me my ass everytime
I do remember seeing a video of someone playing Futari 1.01, and good lord did that look tough.
I also hate the stage 6 bosses in Gradius V. Each on their own, they are pretty nasty. Having to fight them back to back is just mean. I especially dislike the little circle that rolls and ounces around. Guessing at loop 200-something, this boss would be balls-to-the-wall tough

On the subject of Futari's stage 3 boss,
I'm not sure whether it's harder on Original or Maniac, but that thing is easier on Ultra/God.

Re: Hardest boss
Is it really? I've never made it that far in those uber modes. In BL original, the boss just seems so angry. It;d be interesting to see which version was easiest/hardest.Chaos Phoenixma wrote:On the subject of Futari's stage 3 boss,

Is it because there are more bullets, so you can navigate easier? Or are the bullets much slower? I never found the pattern too tough, but the speed it moves at it insane (granted, I usually have around 20k multiplyer, which must be affecting the rank in wonderful ways)
Re: Hardest boss
DFK Hibachi or Mushi Ultra Larsa.
But I did just watch Mill's Strikers replay
, so that might get my vote.

Yep folks, all of these answers are illusions. No, not opinions, because those are indeed real.captpain wrote:There's no real answer to this question.
I really don't see the point in posting shit like this. Whatever frosts your cookie I suppose
Re: Hardest boss
Lizard Core from Gradius III. This boss has no firing patterns whatsoever and it is absolutely random when it shoots its lasers (with a hit box way bigger than the sprite).
And, to get there, you have to beat the crystal rush, which must be one of the biggest dick obstacles ever in shooting game history.
And, if you die, you have to do an entire stage again. No checkpoints.

Re: Hardest boss
Shmups, as a genre, host several hundreds of really tough bosses. It's really hard to pick one. I think shumps do have harder bosses than any other genre in general.
The final boss in ESPgaluda is really tough, especially compared to the rest of the game. I guess that's my pick because that boss is what is keeping me from a 1cc. There are harder bosses out there though.

Dimahoo's final boss is one of the biggest assholes around.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

I used to think so too, but after some experimentation, it looks like Lizard Core fires at predetermined times (at least on normal difficulty). You can prevent the "hands" from firing altogether if you're vertically aligned w/ the missile selector on the item gauge (and who says Gradius isn't heavy on memorization?).Seahawk wrote:Lizard Core from Gradius III. Re: Hardest boss
I never noticed that before. But that doesn't really help much, if you're over the missile select then you're only closer to the main guns, and have less time to escape from being shot in the face. And if it brings the arms forward, then they are conveniently over said missile select and you'll crashsaucykobold wrote:I used to think so too, but after some experimentation, it looks like Lizard Core fires at predetermined times (at least on normal difficulty). Then again I always play on the hardest difficulty, so I guess I deserve what's coming to me. Another victim a shooting game insanity

You could always try to hide and time that bastard out.

I'm inclined to go with the Dual Hibachi's from DOJ's boss rush since MON is about the only person known to have beat the fuckers. Just seems mathematically correct.

Re: Hardest boss
The final boss of Cho Ren Sha 68K is quite a challenge. Sure you can beat the game fine by getting there with plenty of extra lives to throw away. However, as far as single bosses go, it's extremely difficult to defeat it without dying or bomb spamming. It's one of the fastest final bosses around.
And in that same light, I would nominate Storm Causer from Darius Gaiden as well. It is simply incredibly difficult (or even impossible; jury's still out for me on one particular attack) to consistently dodge no less than 3 of its attacks. I always end up blowing at least 4 or 5 bombs. It's ironic that the hardest boss in Darius Gaiden is one of the least satisfying to beat because of this. Great Thing's ludicrous amount of health actually provides a more enjoyable challenge because you CAN actually dodge all of its attacks.
