Re: How in the world do you guys balance genres?

Now that I'm married with children (great show  ) there's very little time.
I've always primarily played 2D shoot'em ups, although in the past I've managed to fit in some Castlevania, RPGs, 2D platformers when they existed and other games in the 80s arcades.

Only a brief 3 month spell of unemployment in the Summer allowed me to play some Cyvern last year.

Back in college I started taking a liking to short games, I think it was ZoE that did it. I used to be all about RPGs way back in the day, all sorts of long games...now I prefer short games that encourage multiple playthroughs. STGs, racers, fighters, and music games...I've definitely taken to mainly playing arcade games anymore. Can't say I plan on getting married or ever having children, I'm sure it's awful and selfish of me but I don't like the idea of having even less time to myself for my assorted hobbies.

I'm another person who tends not to finish the games I buy, although I really do have time to it's just that I have trouble going for more than like a month or two without buying more.
I think I have like 6 RPGs I started in 2009 or 2010 and still plan on finishing... eventually
There is also the issue I have with sitting in the same place for long periods of time that arcade games manage to avoid.
But the thing that time constraints destroys the most is in playing games online. I hate the idea of not being able to leave as soon as I want to. *remembers avoiding real life (to play more WoW) with shame* :(

Great thing is that you can't really "finish" a shmup. Get as good as you want to and then lay it aside - if you practice well, it doesn't take that much time a day to get really skilled. With RPGs, no such luck - though I do find that most DS RPGs can be played in shorter stretches.

Summer and winter breaks for me are time to rock JRPGs. During the semester, shmups work much better for study breaks.

You have an ego that effects your compulsions. Decide how it is best defined, and learn when to deal with things that cause you angst - sometimes this may mean choosing not to do something.

1. Why are you buying or playing this game?

Tip: Your answer should vary depending on what's going on.

2. Decide if what you want is the right thing for you.

Tip: its fine for something to be an attraction, but don't be too selfish. Particularly, if you've an addictive personality recognise when/where you're best serving yourself and when you're punishing yourself.

3. Enjoy your decision.

Tip: If you can't even enjoy the right decisions, you'll never enjoy anything. Check steps one and two if this isn't happening.

Game specific for me [you need to decide your own boundaries]: Imho its fine to collect. I like completing games, but I don't care about 1ccs. I typically play 3 different games at once. One of these will be a 'linear' [debatable but you get what I mean] 15hr+ game. I like variety, but not too much, I find this helps me to keep track of stuff fully whilst not burning out on a single game. It also helps that I can continue playing something depending on how much time I have...

..As I say you have to decide what's good for you, my example is just what I do as concerned games and my 'spare time'.

I reckon I spend something like 70% of my gaming time on shmups. All the remaining time goes on borderliners and anything else that broadly fits the description of 'a fast paced action game'. (King of Fighters, Metal Slugs, Puyo Puyo, Quake, Zone of Enders, Panzer Dragoon, Robotron, Pac Man.....)

That strikes a good balance for me personally. Going back quite a few years I used to also play longer story based third person games as well but I just never had the time or inclination to play too far into them. I appreciate those sorts of games for their production values and so on but I just don't find them as compulsive or fun to play as the more arcadey games.
