Advice on Versions of Different Console Shmups

Post by ancestral-knowledge »

Hello everyone.

Yesterday i received my JAP xbox360. Now i wanted to purchase a stack of games for it. The problem is: I do not know which version of the game i should be getting. Money is not a issue and i like limited versions with OSTs or other things in it. I'll just dump a list and say which Version i was going to get and i was hoping some of you could give me some advice on a version of the game i should be getting. There is only one restriction: No platinum Versions or compilations. I hate these.

For credit I will be playing with my Street Fighter 4 Tournament Edition Stick, which i'm using for my PS3.
I hope I will get some nice responses. I am especially clueless about Raiden 4 Versions and the Death Smiles Version.
Have a nice sunny day!

I don't have a lot to say but:
1) Make sure you get the 1.01 DLC card for Mushihimesama Futari 1.5 if you're the completist type.
2) Your PS3 TE stick won't work on a 360 - you'll need another stick.

thank you for your reply!

I will look after the card! This is exactly the type of information i am looking for.

I think i didn't make myself clear about the stick. The stick is for xbox360 so no problems there.

Best regards

Personally I don't rate the 360 limited editions, personally not that interested in the soundtracks... I'd be interested in a good printed art book, proper interviews, some form of documentation of game development/evolution - none of them offer that as far as I know.

I would recommend ketsui [regular]. Coincidentally I believe ketsui also includes some nice, illuminating, concept art work on disk/gallery... more than any of the limited editions seem to offer...

Get the Japanese platinum Ed. Of deathsmiles. It comes with everything the US ver had save for a faceplate... But you don't need that anyways. But the jp platinum has all the game modes included, unlike the standard jp edition. I got burned thinking the original would be the same as the US, lol I was wrong.

Ketsui and Daioujou limited editions have booklets in addition to the standard OST (included as a pre-order bonus too in case you can find those), and Espgaluda II had a faceplate (if your Xbox accepts faceplates in the first place). As far as DLC goes (limited or pre-order/first print), Deathsmiles has a voice acting DL, Deathsmiles IIX's DLC unlocks an arrange soundtrack in the game, and Futari, Daifukkatsu and Muchi Muchi Pork have DLCs with an extra special mode (I'm rather fond of Futari 1.01 myself).

Also keep in mind regular DLC: the first Deathsmiles release in Japan doesn't have Mega Black Label (for 1200 Japanese points), the Platinum re-release does but lacks MBL 1.1 (a sort of Arrange mode for 240 Japanese points), and the US and PAL releases have everything but won't play on Japanese consoles. Futari also has a Black Label DLC for 1200 points of any region, and that one isn't included in the Platinum re-release.

The limited edition version of Raiden IV comes with the excellent Ultimate of Raiden soundtrack. This has all the music from Raiden IV plus 7 nice remixes. Make sure you don't get it from Gamestop unless you want their shitty logo ruining your CD though.

EDIT: Oh, JP 360...

You'll have to get over your hatred of Platinum releases for DeathSmiles, unless you don't mind paying for all the DLC separately (or don't want it). The US version won't work on a Japanese system.

The LE version of Daifukkatsu comes in an awkward box and you have to pull out the arrange soundtrack CD and a piece of card to actually get to the DVD case. The arrange soundtrack is, frankly, awful. But that's my opinion, and you can judge it for yourself since it's on Youtube. There is nothing different about the actual game. The first print run of Daifukkatsu (both LE and SE) have round purple stickers on the cover which indicates that the version 1.51 DLC card is included in the package.

I thought there was only one Japanese version of Raiden IV? Again, the US version is region locked so don't bother with that. Mine came with the soundtrack CD (inside the game DVD case). AFAIK there are no Japanese copies that don't include the bonus CD, but I could be wrong...

Not sure about what's in each version of Mushihimesama Futari. The LE comes with a (rather nice) soundtrack CD, and I believe a small art book too. I'd guess it has the same irritating box that you have to fiddle around with to get to/store the game as with Daifukkatsu. It's also going to be quite expensive and difficult to source nowadays too, especially if it comes with an unused v1.01 card.
So, are we expected to turn our TV on its side?!

If you want the extra DLC cards, you're going to have to search out for new LEs. All LEs come with the DLC card, whereas only first-print normal editions come with it (good luck finding them for an old game).

There are some first print copies around still (I got my Futari on Yahoo Japan Auctions, first print and unopened for about 3000 yen), but they're starting to dwindle out yes... but yes you'll probably have better luck hunting for standalone DLC cards at this point.

Thank you very much everyone. Your input has been very valuable for me.
You convinced me to get the Platinum Edition For DeathSmiles now. So I will be getting now:

Tetris Grandmaster Ace (unaltered)

Dodonpachi Daifukatsku Limited Edition with DLC

Death Smiles JAP Platinum Edition

Raiden 4 Limited Edition (with OST, but i think every Raiden JP Version comes with the OST )

Mushihimesama Futari 1.5 With DLC

Muchi Muchi Pork! & Pink Sweets (No Region Protection i think)

Have a nice day everyone!

EDIT: Guess I'm a little late to the party.

I buy whatever edition has the cover I like best.

Raiden 4 is region locked on the US version and honestly the game is slow and boring, not worth the JP price tag at all IMO.

You might not like Platinum Editions but the PE of Deathsmiles comes with Mega Black Label on the disc.

The LE of DFK guarantees you get the 1.51 card. IMO 1.51 is the 2nd best mode on the disc. It's kind of like Black Label light.

I prefer the LE of Futari's cover better but only have the standard edition due to financial reasons. I wish would have been able to get the LE. It bugs me I can't give 1.01 a shot.

Also as stated above the PS3 TE isn't compatible with 360

The Japanese Platinum Hits version of DeathSmiles does not include MBL ver 1.1 (it contains DS Arcade, DS 360, DS ver 1.1, MBL Arcade and MBL 360). The US release includes all 6 game modes.

Noone is late to the party :)
The order will be placed in about 10 hours so nothing comes too late at this point. I always like to wait one day before i order just to have time to rethink about the positions or editions.

Everyone here convinced me to buy the Platinum Edition for Deathsmiles so i will be getting that and as of Futari i managed to get a copy of a limited edition with DLC (was expensive though: http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 770wt_1139 ) .

I dropped the order for Muchi Muchi Prok though. I will be getting the Limited Edition along with Akai Katana when Play Asia allows preorders for it.

Have a nice day
