shmup loving on the ds

Post by sjewkestheloon »

just picked myself up a copy of iridion 2 and xevious (obviously gba ports) for soem shmup loving on my newly aquired ds while i'm waiting for either a localisation (pal) or money to import. iridion 2 seems a lot of fun if easy as hell and i think i'll try some score improvement. anyone here entered their scores into the web site? had a look but didn't spot any obvious usernames i recognised.

as for xevious it seems pretty decent and something i can have a 2 min blast on to try and improve score.

just wondering what opinions these two titles provoke with you lovely lot.

Xevious on the GBA is a nice port, but it just doesn't compare to playing it on a tv in tate mode (made possible by the inexpensive Xevious 3D/G) with your favorite controller for PS. I play ten times better with a larger screen and my Logitech wireless controller. But for gaming-on-the-go and in quick spurts, I do like Xevious on the GBA.

If you're looking for portable shmupping, the PSP should keep you occupied for much longer. There is only a handful of GBA/DS exclusive shooters, and with a PSP, you have access to better and non-scaled versions of all of the emulators for GBA, plus great stuff like Megadrive, better SNES and PC-Engine, and NeoGeo CD. I think there's even a MSX emulator too.

Unofficially emulated games don't count. If you compare the actual shmup lineup on the PSP, neither system has much, though IMO, the b/w GB has a better shmup lineup than either the GBA or PSP. The GB has Nemesis, Nemesis II/Gradius II, Sagaia, Aerostar, Galaga/Galaxian, Twinbee Da!!/Pop 'n Twinbee, and Parodius. The PSP has Sengoku Cannon, some games in Namco Museum Battle, Space Invaders collection, and Star Soldier. The GBA has some games in Konami Arcade Advance (fine collection BTW), some games in Atari Anniversary Advance (which has tate), some games in the Activision anthology, more than one port of Galaga (the second is going to be in yet another Namco museum, but this port will have tate), Space Invaders, Invader, Gradius Galaxies, Star Soldier Famicom Mini, Xevious classic NES, Famicom Mini Twinbee, and Iridion II. Of course, I'm just listing all games and not just the good ones.

The PSP will be getting an official Xevious very soon with the Namco Museum Battle collection. The Famicom Mini/Classic NES Xevious isn't arcade perfect or tate, but it's still a fine port and definatly recommended. Still, Xevious 3D + G is just as cheap (if not cheaper), has great tate and non tate modes, and has multiple games on one disc. But Xevious 3D + G isn't portable.
