What is the aspect ratio of your desktop monitor
What is the aspect ratio of your desktop monitor
Not to be out done by nimitz's poll, I'm wondering what the median aspect ratio of people's main desktop monitor is equal to.
The reason I ask is I can see all the consumer monitors on the market have become the "one size fits all" aspect ratio of 16:9. It's only when you want to purchase 30" monitors that you seem to have the 16:10 option available.

My monitor:

Not really; I use a 4:3 CRT, the superior monitor.

Re: What is the aspect ratio of your desktop monitor
My iMac appears to be 16:9 to me.
My legacy machine's LCD screen is 4:3 which is cool because I can rotate it and Batrider looks damn awesome.
My TV is the same although if I TATE it while its turned on I've realised it goes weird with colours on one corner. Fortunately turning it off and leaving it for a while or just turning it off before TATEing it solves that issue.
I noticed the most expensive monitor I could find at Scorptec.com.au appeared to be a 4:3 screen too while the cheapo ones were 16:9.
Strange trend indeed.

BenQ FP202W
16:10. Reviews say my monitor's laggy, but that doesn't stop me from kicking people's ass in Bomberman.
I have another LCD planned soon, the VH242H. It's the highest rated monitor on Newegg, and I'm beginning to see the backlit tubes come through on my 202w, which is my reason for wanting a replacement. I'm not wasteful though, I'll use my FP202W, newer LCD, and tate'd CRT all on the same desk.

Whether you like "widescreens" or not, the trend is easily explained.BPzeBanshee wrote:Strange trend indeed.
I've got two of these at my lab in Australia. They're alright, I guess. Colours are obviously no where near as good as a PVA/IPS monitor, but they're not as awful as some of the old Samsungs I've owned. The whole chassis feels pretty cheap though. You should run a input latency test on it, using your CRT. Some idiots at SRK call a similar monitor (the VH236H) "lagless", but I assure you it isn't.Elixir wrote:I have another LCD planned soon, the VH242H

Re: What is the aspect ratio of your desktop monitor
Interesting thread, thanks for the info austere. Kinda sucks that laggy LCD screens with flattened resolution are 'the way of the future' but if they come up with something better eventually I'll be more than happy.
I just managed to TATE my TV for Guwange XBLA for the first time a few days ago, and when doing that while switched on I got funky colours on one corner. I really hope I dont break the TV and have to buy one of these stupid 'bang for buck' flatscreens for replacements (or worse, go to Cash Converters where everything's a 300% markup of real value).

Re: What is the aspect ratio of your desktop monitor
There's no such thing as a lagless flat-panel.
I currently use a Dell U2311H as my main monitor. I also have a Samsung BX2235 (21.5" TN with LED backlight) that I use as a travel monitor/gaming display for conventions. Unfortunately, there isn't enough room on my desk to use both at the same time =/ Both panels are 1920x1080.

Re: What is the aspect ratio of your desktop monitor
What's the difference between the V242H and the VH242H? Or do I have my model numbers mixed up?
I had a V242H a while ago which I gave to my Dad. I didn't find any problems with the display, it was fast enough for me and I always used it facing straight-on so viewing angles weren't an issue.
There is a quirk about a slight delay on audio coming on after a period of silence, and sometimes some consoles or scalers wouldn't play nice with the HDMI input (might have been my cable).
I didn't have a big audio setup, but the option of SPDIF out is nice to have.
It has VESA mounts on the back, but no vents on the sides so I was concerned about running it tate.
I'm currently on a BenQ XL2410T, 24" 1920x1080 16:9 @ 120Hz, Nvidia 3D Vision-ready, LED-backlit, headphone jack, and has a rotating stand.
It has plenty of scaled/aspect/1:1 display modes, and a picture-by-picture mode which is surprisingly useful. The only thing that could make this better is if the DVI and VGA inputs could be used at the same time in PBP mode.

Mine is 1920 x 1080.
The nice thing about computer monitors is that they usually don't hide any pixels. Tvs on the other hand have a nasty habit of cutting scores off the top of the screen. Hurray for DVI to HDMI converters.

I use my Panasonic L37G20 LCD TV as my primary PC monitor. DVI > HDMI and the ability to toggle off overscan for 1:1 pixel mapping means I get a gorgeous 37" 1080p desktop.

Using a 24" 16:10 display, IPS type. Also have a 16:9 TN (but 120Hz) that I use here and there and for some gaming.
I prefer the 16:10 by far.

Nice. I had one from the year 2000 but it died last year, sadly. It wasn't worth repairing because the shadow mask had deteriorated anyway.njiska wrote:21" 4:3 Dell Branded Trinitron

I will never buy a widescreen. I hate them, and stubbornness is in my genes.
The industry has pretty clear motives for pushing them. (Interestingly, many details of the whole widescreen/HDTV clusterf?%k seem to be rooted in the old, bizarre MUSE standard from Japan. I say bizarre because of the proposed interlacing scheme. THAT is something for which I have no explanation
) But by accepting it, we have now doomed ourselves to an unescapable infestation of black bars and/or people with fat/skinny heads, regardless of display, because broadcasters apparently can`t get their $#!+ together and decide on one or other or encode it correctly.

Re: What is the aspect ratio of your desktop monitor
I got really lucky when I found it. Some local shop was clearing out monitors that came back off a hardware lease so they were $250 a piece. In 2002 that was a pretty good deal. Between me and my friend James I'm pretty sure we bought 7. Sadly my second one has a notable green tinge. Hoping i can repair it, but haven't had the time to investigate.austere wrote:Nice. Personally I'm glad for the switch to widescreen. From a computing perspective it gives me more desktop space to work with (i never maximize). From a movie and gaming standpoint it's great because it lets me see more picture and it allows for more natural cinematography. Seriously try framing a 4:3 image. It's a bitch. Sure there are black bars when viewing old content, but that's really not a concern for me.ED-057 wrote:I will never buy a widescreen. I hate them, and stubbornness is in my genes.

Sadly i fear I will soon need to replace my Trinitorn as PC games keep moving towards 16:9 framing.

Still using the old Dell 2001FP (20" LCD at 1600x1200 resolution) I bought back in 2004 (Think I paid $800 on a coupon deal for it back in the day.) This was back when the majority of monitors being sold were still 15" and 17". I'm not even sure where you'd find anything less than a 19" anymore.
Somewhere along the line I'd like to upgrade to some sort of dual-monitor setup, I have 2 monitors at work and it makes it a lot easier to do stuff.

Re: What is the aspect ratio of your desktop monitor
Like njiska I prefer to run everything in little windows, and I find a single wide 24" works fine. My father also used dual-mons until I gave him a wide 24". With monitors becoming bigger as well, you would need to have a huge desk to run two monitors, unless you have both of them vertically.Vexorg wrote:Somewhere along the line I'd like to upgrade to some sort of dual-monitor setup, I have 2 monitors at work and it makes it a lot easier to do stuff.
Having a wide monitor is wonderful for spreadsheet work and that is probably the only time I run anything maximised.
Re: What is the aspect ratio of your desktop monitor
I tend to have way too much stuff going at a time, so I'd definitely find more use for a second screen than a higher resolution single screen. If nothing else, it's good for keeping stuff on the proverbial back burner. There have been studies about how people can make major productivity gains by adding monitors, especially ones who work with software development.gct wrote:Like njiska I prefer to run everything in little windows, and I find a single wide 24" works fine. Right with you there. Like I mentioned I have one widescreen LCD monitor along with two old crt's and can't imagine working without them. Having multiple screen coupled with being able to segregate workspaces to each screen is incredibly helpful for someone like me as I'm usually working on several projects and school work around the same time. Since I use Arch on my home station it's also nice being able to boot up XP on virtual box to a separate monitor for office programs so I can be running both systems at the same time and see it all laid out in front of me. Makes it hard going back to the laptop when I'm out and about

My parents have an old ws CRT TV which is never in the correct aspect ratio for whatever program is showing. They like to watch alot of old war movies and whenever the germans speak and subtitles are shown they cant understand what theyre saying as the bottom line of text is chopped off.But by accepting it, we have now doomed ourselves to an unescapable infestation of black bars and/or people with fat/skinny heads, regardless of display, because broadcasters apparently can`t get their $#!+ together and decide on one or other or encode it correctly.
