jazz music in shmups

Post by lilmanjs »

are there any shmups that have jazz music for the music in the game? I really have been liking the stage 2 arranged version from under defeat.

Border Down, Thunder Force IV, Thunder Force VI, super aleste, Battle Garegga and pretty much everything from Zuntata to some extent.

That being said, The term "jazz" is used pretty loosely here.

I always saw Shmup as a genre generally having atleast some jazz influence in most of it's music. also yeah, Zuntata music in general is quite jazzy, when they aren't going off the deep end with the freaky vibes.

Clockwork Knight has a greatly compiled jazz soundtrack in my opinion, but it's not a shmup of course.
Shooterwise I guess a lot of soundtracks are settled in the nu-jazz region. There is not really a line drawn between nu-jazz and electronic except for maybe some less chaotic style, but if you consider this jazz as well you'll be happy with Garegga.

How would you qualify Border Down's music then?? (if it's not jazz)

Ya the vibe in GIV gave me a jazz impression... I really enjoy the style it took to the music... a very contempory, articulate vibe.

Have you ever listened to the first stage music (in its entirety) of Super R-Type?

God, I love the Viewpoint tunes.
Thanx for mentionning those early 90's flavoured tunes guys :)
Stage 3 is the sh.. !

Another game I I love the soundtrack is Raycrisis, Zuntata once again  Most of the tunes have an electro feeling and two or three are incredible with great synths and bass lines, but it's closer to funk than jazz.

I remember the first time I played it the random map selection puted me one of those specific tunes, adding this to all the camera angle changes, man it made me feel like the funkiest alien blaster 8)
(such a pitty that the game is so short)

Metal Black's Dual Moon is a pretty impressive track. and about as close to straight jazz in a shmup as I've heard outside of the st3 green tune in Border Down (same musician).

Also check out the FM funk compilation over in Off Topic (lots of jazz-funk) :) </plug>

Have to say, apart from the now well recognised MS military theme, I always disliked the game's elevator Jazz - totally the wrong vibe and one of the worst conceived aspects to an otherwise mighty Rn'G.
Playing Shock Troopers makes its disjointedness even more pronounced.

This has a very jazzy feel to it, I think. It's certainly chill.

Not sure if it counts but Senko no Ronde: DUO features some nice trumpet and guitar trading off in the track "Attackers Blues"

Galaga '88 had different music styles for it's "Galactic Dancing".

I couldn't remember which exactly but a quick search found out that one of them was indeed in jazzy in style (I'm not a connoisseur though, so I have to go on the description of the people posting the info).

Check this medley (quite nicely done I think)
from sec. 45 on.
