This looks like another name rape.

Unnecessary 'anime' style? Check
Change Yar to Female Human? Check
Bikini Armor? Check
'Edgy' badass facial expressions? Check
More attention on 'Memorable Characters' rather than gameplay? Check
You shot the nail straight in the core.

Yar's Revenge was one of my All TIME faves on the old Atari 2600, so it really irks me the direction they're going with this :x

It looks panzer dragoon like. Which makes me excited. I dunno if you take out the retro tie-back I think this would be exciting. Personally I'm fairly excited. I'm gonna get this.

After watching this video (link) I've lost interest. It looks like they've almost gone "euro" style with it. Loooooong levels with little variety. Bosses that take too long to go down.
Rail shooters need to be action packed (just look at the more popular ones: Space Harrier, Panzer Dragoon, Sin and Punishment)
But this looks game looks boring :(

I use psn exclusively.

Never played the original and will not buy this. I think I could do better at visualizing an old game in a new shell.

Tetris and Pacman CE are two examples of how to do 2D HD. That Yars revenge HD remake will probably make less money with all those fancy graphics than it would if it were just a remake of the original. Mind you, Atari lost its way ages ago. Remember when they thought anything they had on the Jaguar was going to go up against Tekken?

I saw a great game the other day called Explodemon or something -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4avuT6S9oQ

That looks more inviting to me. I might even buy it.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I totally agree with you wariomona this really looks like a euroshmup railshooter. Pretty graphics but looong boring stages.
I don't want to judge it before playing the demo but how high are the chances of a western developer making an intense action-packed rail shooter?

Played the demo. Seemed incredibly poor to me. Really shoddy, like a poor XBLIG with slightly better graphics. Even the reticule control doesn't feel right.

In my opinion they totally screwed up the controls. They're way to complicated. You control your character with the left stick and the cross hair with the right stick while using nearly all the buttons available. That might be doable for FPS veterans, but it's too much for me. And it's shame, since the game itself looks halfway decent. Would have worked nice with a Rez or PD Orta control scheme....

Agreed. Shame because in some respects it's a reasonable idea and the gfx ain't too shabby either.

I've only played the first two stages so far but I'm enjoying it. I don't think the controls being "too hard" is a valid complaint, maybe you should just put in a bit of effort to learn them instead of expecting it to be on a rail.

For me it's not so much 'too hard' as I just don't like them.

There's definitely something wrong with the reticule, in terms of both its movement and its accuracy - it doesn't lock on to enemies when they're in the centre of it, but when they're slightly below. And the whole thing of having a massive aiming reticule, but only a tiny point on it actually having any relevance as to whether your shots hit the enemy or not, is deeply annoying.

Also, your shot seems incredibly weak. Combined with the aiming issues, you're lucky to take out anything other than the popcorn enemies with your regular shot before the screen's whizzed away from them.

Did anyone watch the long Giant Bomb (or whatever the site is called) video? The one with the two fat guys that look pretty much the same but one uses glasses? Ok, 20 mins featuring a lot of footage from the game.

From the looks of that, it appears to be terribly, incredibly dull and lifeless.

Almost as if these guys played Panzer Dragoon Orta alone but got it ALL wrong except that it had to look animeish.

Did they ever try Omega Boost? (whose fast paced action and nonstop addicting lock-on guided laser missiles, big mechas and shooting still has no match) Panzer Dragoon 2? Even Gamera 2000!

Seems that the PC version will be ready for next week. Perhaps they can fix stuff through patches.

I've finished it now, and while it does have some problems with it, I'm definitely happy with what I got for 800msp.

Like
- Story sequences with nice art at the beginning, midpoint and ending.
- Stages look great, decent amount of variety in their design.
- Great design for both Yar suits and bosses, ok for regular enemies.
- Music.
- Decent variety in shot types and powerups.
- Decent depth in scoring with chain style multiplier that requires you to learn enemy positions and ration powerups correctly.

Dislike
- Not enough variety in regular enemy types.
- Stages and boss fights too long.
- Controls unable to be remapped (having main shot on RT when you constantly need to be using RB is killing my finger muscles).
- Dialogue during the missions is distracting and hard to read without losing focus on the game (although I do like their weird voices).

I haven't had a problem with the reticle behaviour, it seems to lock-on quite well for me (esp with the Railgun as that seems to increase the lock-on radius).

Slight thread necromancy here, but I just got round to playing this game and I concur with the poster above that this game is actually quite worthwhile if you like railshooters.

Now I have a dragoon-shaped hole in my railshooter experience since I was not into gaming when it came out, so I'm mostly comparing this to classics like space harrier and galaxy force, and modern games like AB climax and Rez HD.

The environments have a really nice and imaginative otherwordly quality, reminding me a lot of galaxy force's alien worlds. Trancey music fits the visuals perfectly. The controls take some getting used to but are otherwise fine. Didn't mind the level length that much, the general action is not as intense as ABclimax so longer levels are quite manageble IMHO and make for a nice change of pace (considering the other game im playing now is pink sweets).

that's about it really... if you're like me and like to revisit the fantasy zone from time to time this game will definitely do that for you, just give yourself a while to get used to the controls.

+1

Not being able to remap was making my hand cramp up and I had to take a few breaks (getting old sucks).
What's that spooty spoot king of the spoots stupid spoot guy doing here?

I just don't think I can look at rail shooters the same after playing the supremely awesome Sin and Punishment 2 for Wii. The controls are no less than perfect and any rail shooter that doesn't have these controls already has one big thing working against it imo.

I agree that it doesn't have much to do aesthetically (or functionally) with the original; but I dig it all the same. I'm all for more well made rail shooters showing up on places like XBLA.

Still, as much as I universally love hot anime girls in rocket propelled bikini armor, if your going to call it Yar's Revenge, bring on the damn chrome-plated cybernetic insectoids from space! If it wouldn't look right painted on the side of an early 80's arcade machine, it doesn't belong! (Kidding... well, sorta)

Something about it's sound does give me a cool arcade vibe, though.
