On a more positive note, my favorite band since I was 14 (I am 23 now) is named Swans. I get to see them live for the first time ever in about 6 weeks or so. I really can't wait. The live footage I have seen from last year was so amazing I should be in for a fantastic night.

It is Australia Day here in, err, Australia and I am fucked beyond the shit-tit. I ended up drinking till 5 am yesterday and now it is nearly midnight and I'm drank wau too much. Hey guys drauch here. Kinda drunk. Kinda feeling like life. Ya know, that sort of thing. I have come to the conclusion that growing a beard is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I never thought I could grow one, but oh, was I wrong. I tried to spell was as "whas". Not good. Anyhow. I am a short dood. I am 5'6" so people don't take me seriously because I do not look my age. Anyhow, I grew a beard and now I can talk to people. I lost my social anxiety with a beard. I can instill fear in the hearts of fools with this beard. I critical all the time in D&D with this beard. This beard helped me get through most things. I met a most wonderful female who digs beards, even. I think God, Crom, and even Odin for this beard. Hopefully one of those are real so I can give the appropriate thanks. Even if Solipsism is real, I thank myself for growing this beard. I can talk well with this beard. This beard has given me confidence. It is not a mask, because it grows on my face. This beard is me. I am the beard. This beard is life. This beard is drunk.

Definitely avoid things that come in 12 packs or more (again, not always 100% true, but...), and consider the alchohol content. It isn't that high ABV beers need to be better, but there's a glut of shitty low ABV beers; plus high abv beers are harder (and more expensive) to make.

Also keep in mind what styles you like. If you enjoy porters, then start checking out as many porters and stouts as possible. Why not give Old Rasputin a shot?

That's debateable about higher ABV beers being harder to make. Making a good 5% pilsner requires more technical precision than making a 10% stout.

Agreed. I meant for the large scale brewers. In this case, harder = longer time to ferment. For a homebrewer, 10% stout is WAYYYY EASIER to make than a 4% pilsner. Not even in the same catagory!

Absolutely everything I said was debatable, but still remains a good indicator.

Truth is, an absolutley uninformed beer novice is going to do better seeking out beers that are a) more expensive, b) higher abv, and c) comes in 6 or even 4 packs. Can I find great beer breaking these rules...you bet! I rather like Sierra Nevada's Torpedo, and it is both cheap and comes in a 12 pack. *shrugs*
