Would somebody cross-check my setup ?

Post by Fudoh »

I tend to be lazy when it comes to cabling. The last time I did everything new from scratch was in 2004. A lot of machines have come and gone since then and one thing I'm great at is removing an electronic device and leaving all the cables in place. So I just cleaned out my whole setup, removed 18kg (40 lbs) of cables and re-arranged all machines currently in use.

As I'm starting to get a headache when even thinking about this, I'd appreciate if somebody could look over the new cabling plan and tell me if I'm missing anything. In the current planing stage my recording device (Blackmagic) isn't connected, but that's an easy fix (just put a 2nd HDMI matrix between the 1st matrix and the monitor and connect the Blackmagic there). Also the DC was running through a Kramer transcoder in the past. For convenience I just planned on using the XSelect's transcoder for now. Audio might take a different route through the setup than video, but that's ok. Ethernet and power cabling isn't shown, just video (violet) and audio (pink).

Here the link to the currently planned setup. http://pms.hazard-city.de/setup2011.gif

I plan on ordering the last missing cables tonight or tomorrow, so every bit of help is highly appreciated. The diagram actually looks scarier than it is. All the stuff''s fitting into one rack....

:shock: I thought my set up was a mess

I'll take a look when I have time to study it. The RGB interface before the SLG3000 provides a better signal?

I have two Extron interfaces in the setup. The one after the SLG3000 just acts a splitter and has it's sync processing disabled. The one before the SLG3000 is a switch with 3 inputs. It has the sync processing enabled which is needed since my TV otherwise can't display 480p via VGA.

Basically a 3-in / 2-out VGA setup with the SLG3000 inbetween.

Okay, I'm no expert but your cabling looks solid. The Lumagen connects directly to the Sony but has to go through the VP50 > HDMI Matrix to connect to the NEC. From your various posts, I assume the SLG3000 is last in the signal chain and isn't routed for further processing, unless the VP50 acts as a hub for the signal, sends it out to the Lumagen and then chains it back into the VP50 for routing or processing? I see that it acts as a hub to go the NEC.

Wow. I think someone needs a harmony remote! :D

I didn't spot anything blatant, but then again I'm not completely familiar w/ all the scalers/converters/modes you are using...

I use a Pronto TSU7500. A few years old by now, but still fine.

I was worried about analog signal degradation over a few devices but if the setup pictured produces a satisfactory image from a device passing through all that I think we'll all be ok.

I'm not too sure too many people can compete with that big of a setup. I made a schematic of my setup last year to help me connect everything and the rule still holds true: No matter how many games you own, or how crazy your setup is, someone on the internet will always beat you down...
Current Setup:

720P------------------------v
240P->XRGB-3->Edge->4x2 matrix->DLP HDTV
480i/P->YPbPrselect-^ . . ^ . . V-->hdmi2vga->Super Emotia->Tate CRT SDTV
PC->vga2hdmi-------------^

yeah, quality shouldn't be an issue. Good analog switching and routing devices have become cheaper since many users have completely switched to HDMI-only setup. The YUV matrix switch is a Zektor HDS4.2 (I don't even like to think about what this baby did cost) and the while the Audio Authority distribution switch hehind it was cheap when I bought it, it got rave reviews back in the day. The Extron VGA interfaces are fine as well.

I've ordered the last missing cables today, bought a few screws to attach the LAN router and YUV distributor to the back of the rack, so I'm ready to go. I'll shoot some photos while doing this - will be more to fun to watch though than to actual build this...

I thought I was the only one with a Zektor component switch. Everyone always seems to use an A/V receiver.

That is beyond badass man! Do you play everything in yoke and have a cab for Tate games?

Very nice & solid setup! I'm still a noob at this, but burning money on such devices is slowly starting the get addicting - currently looking for Kramer FC-16, can't find.
And I should really learn to draw cabling diagrams - looks like it makes some things considerably easier.

EDIT: Just found out the FC-14 has also RGBHV input...

Below are a few digicam shots from the work in progress. I'll take some snapshots from the completed setup once I get around cleaning up a bit...... compared with the shots below my amp, my LD player and my media player (Dune Smart) stand on top of the tack while another RGB interface and two HDMI matrixes are located in the bottom right shelf....

Took about 2 days (around 20 hours) to complete the setup. The rack is now filled up to a point where it's - unfortunately - absolutely impossible to add or remove any device or cable without a MAJOR work involved. The rack - while on wheels - is completely unmoveable because it's a) too heavy and b) because the whole power cabling fills up every last inch of space below the rack.

My goal for the next 2 years is now to break up the setup and keep the gaming and the movie setup completely seperated.
