HD Box Pro: how does it stack up to other devices?

Post by Rock Man »

Recently my friend decided to stop by and check out my kickass XRGB-3. We played his RGB-modded N64 on that thing, everything looked great! So he's became heavily enthused about these megapowered converters as of late (partially my fault I've created a monster) he's into the 2D consoles, Super Guns, PCB boards and things of that nature.

The latest device he picked up was Universal HD Brands SCART to HDMI converter which handles 720/1080p. But now he's asking me about the Flame Meister (sounds like a Transformer) and the HD Box. Planning on picking up the XRGB sometime in the distant future he's just looking for something else other than the Coosis to tide him over. Upon research I discovered Micomsoft's Flame Meister won't be around for a while so I suggested the HD Box since it supports VGA.

What I'm trying to find out is, what tier does it fall under when compared to other devices? Is it the 2nd most logical choice from the XRGB series at the moment for analogue gaming or is there a better converter within budget?

You know that I have a whole website on which all possibilities are covered, right ?

You always get what you pay for. BUT using some kind of scanline emulation covers a lot of deinterlacing flaws, so while a HDBoxPro on it's own is just that - a $50 deinterlacer, he should think about adding the SLG3000 to the output. But even then the HDBoxPro only has a component input, so he might be better with the CGA/VGA converter fagin used here

Otherwise he's looking at $40-50 HDBoxPro, $50 RGB to component transcoder, $70 SLG3000. Still considerably less than the XRGB of course.

*facepalms*

That's right! How could I forget about that site which actually helped my converting needs.

I'll pass the message along, judging by the looks of things I couldn't recommend this converter. Though your suggestion seems reasonable as usual.

I remember originally getting one because I was stuck with just a monitor and a dead tv, so I needed a way of getting other systems like xbox/gcn/ps2 etc playable. That was a couple years back, but right now I couldn't suggest enough about getting a unit that has proper scaling. HDBox is just a quick solution and I couldn't suggest it for anything beyond that.
