Say Rap! Say Taito!...say what?

Post by Dewclaw »

a while back my cousin gave me his comic book collection. I started looking through them at random recently and saw this advertisement for Sky Shark(it was in a Justice League Europe for what thats worth):

Click here for the full ad.

Apparently some kind of contest, but I don't have a clue what the deal was. I'd contact my "Taito dealer" but this was from 1989. Did anybody hear about this back in the day?

I have no idea, but that SkyShark ad is awesome. What with the guy and his awesome face in the background.
The radio said, "No, John. You are the demons."
And then, John was a zombie.

That's the label art on the NES cartridge.

Argh...it's tormenting me. What kind of contest could have to do with Taito and rap? Dropping lyrics about Darius? Whatever I imagine it to be is probably more interestin than the reality.

I'm surprised that Taito even had a North American division in the first place.

Yep, Taito did indeed have a USA arcade/console distro...

Yep, Taito did indeed have an USA arcade/console division setup that would get the latest Taito arcade PCB kit & dedicated full size arcade cabinets + home console game ports of their famous arcade titles for the USA gaming market. Unfortunately, Taito pulled out it's USA arcade/console division in the mid 1990's, otherwise an USA Bios version of the Taito G-Net mobo would've been created for the U.S. arcade market along with English language versions of Taito G-Cards (but sadly, that was never to be).

As it turns out Taito did have a special contest with the Sky Shark NES game back in 1989 for U.S. residents. I'm not sure who were the winners in that particular contest but there was a little write-up about the "Say Rap! Say Yo! Say Taito!" contest in the 3rd issue of Gamepro issue dated Sept/Oct 1989.

Give 'em a taste of yo' big-@$$ lay-za!

They gettin' off da streets each time they see me;
They know that I is cravin' Tuna Sashimi,
They don' know what to do, wish that they could be me:
They all f***ed, I got the game set on easy!"

Man - you think youre cool, but you just talk smack
Like all them other niggaz playin' Metal Black.

Cuz if you weren't so lame, you could make your mark
And lay down the BOMBS in Flyin' Shark.

Now I'd love to stay and talk, but I need my sex
With a classy little honey called Insector X.

Just how much youse in the dark
Cuz you ain't makin' yo mark
Without unlimited credits on Harmful Park!

Man you got dope lyrics, I give you props
But you be messin' with the forum cops
Like Billy Lee wit' forward jump and punch
My reverse elbows gonna spill yo lunch

To beat level 1 on Thunderforce 5
You be puttin' codes in for infinite lives
Yo skills are so weak, you even need
A strategy guide for Gaia Seed

But those aint by Taito, so they out o' scope
Of the huge list o' games in which you can't cope
From Gun Frontier, to Galactic Attack
Yo shootin' skills they just be whack

This ain't no battle rap, it's a Hyper Duel
But yo smart bomb use makes yo look like a fool
I shoot for the core, you shoot for glory
You be safer stayin' home with Fairyland Story

I haven't played the arcade version so I can't make a comparison to that. Standing alone, it is a very fun game. Good challenge, lots of enemies to shoot, speedy and accurate bullet barrages from enemies, nice level variety. Fun stuff.

Heh heh, that thought kinda did cross my mind..."Even though this whole thing is fake, can any good whatsoever come out of this on my end?" :mrgreen: In spite of that notion, I'll try one more round:

"Hey man ya got some good trashin', ya can get that much done,
But does that attitude exude from yo mouth or yo thumbs?
Youse been tryin' ta score some mad respect from me;
But is that laughin' that I's hearin' out from yo DC?

Ya can't just hold a controller, and then say yo da man;
I think ya got too much Toa- and just not enough -Plan;
A little too much joy, but nowhere near enough stick;
The ladies like 'em firm, y'know, but just a little slick.

C'mon say Taaaaiii.....tooooo! (Taaaiii...toooo!)
Lemme hear it, say Taaaaiii....toooooo! (Taaaaiii....toooo!)

Now lemme tell ya a story, stop me now if ya heard;
This guy loaded up a Gun, it just flipped him the Bird-
He tried with infinite continues, didn't have no doubt;
But with him at the helm, even those ran out!

Y'know it really don't help when ya think an Extend
Is something that ya get from yo slutty girl friend.
And the only Chains ya see are on yo car's winter wheels,
While youse drivin thru Wendy's, to score yo high-score Combo deal!

Hey! Ya know DP? (Yeah, you know me!)
Yeah, ya know DP! (Yeah, you know me!)

Yo scores, they is mini; yo flops, they is mega;
There's no way that all those deaths were suicides a la Garegga!
So take it from me, and let me give you a han':
Don't fly in a TF4 san'-
Storm, blast a tank on the lan'
In Raiden or toss a fan
in Vasara...
because startin' tomorra,
You better only lemme catch ya playing Gatchaman!

So when it's all said and done, it's f***in' plain ta see:
That all yo f***in' bases, man, they all belong to ME!

Say Taaaaiiii...tooooo! (Taaaaiiii....tooooo!)

repeat to fade

Phew, all this silliness is becoming too much even for me, heh heh.

Almost. :mrgreen:
