PC Shmup with lots of weapons/upgrades?

Post by HydrogenHuman »

Does anyone know if there are any PC Shmups that have lots of weapons and upgrades besides Jets N Guns? I was a huge fan of Raiden series and Raiden Fighters Aces due to the variety of aircraft you could choose from. Anyone know of any PC shmups that are like that?

Tyrian 2000 is now freeware but I don't really recommend it. Shikigami no Shiro II has variety in abundance, but you really should get into emulation for the heck of it (Compile shmups in particular). Also, Sonic Wings Special. Mahou Daisakusen too (I suggest this version of MAME with bilinear filtering OFF and scanlines ON).
There's a couple of topics about shmups with shops already.

Stargunner looks awesome. I remember Sonic Wings Special, and that was really fun. I'll try out that shmup version of mame, thanks.

Genetos is all about upgrading your ship with a huge variety of weapons.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

I agree with everything except Tyrian 2000. On other hand I do recommend it because of awesome music, tons of weapons/parts to own/upgrade. However you should stick to the original Tyrian because the 5th episode in 2000. Left a huge distaste in many's mouths. So if you don't want to ruin your enjoyment, play the original Tyrian.

On top of that, note that Tyrian 2000 is considerably more unbalanced due to the different ships one can use. OpenTyrian, a modern port of the original Tyrian, will be more than adequate and sortof balanced providing you pick the right weapons. You'll notice which weapon is good to use when you suddenly find it obliterates everything.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. My next question is if there are any PC shmups that have multiplayer? I can't seem to find any that have an online component to them.

The only one that I know put a big emphasis in the multiplayer aspect (although the net code isn't really well optimised) is exception and its freeware counterpart, exception conflict (which is pretty much multiplayer alone).

Here you can purchase exception: http://eng.dlsite.com/work/=/product_id/RE038891 (15 bucks)
Here you can download exception conflict: http://i-saint.skr.jp/exception_conflict/#download

You also have Phantasmagoria of Flower View, a Touhou game that I think uses an improved net code (still pretty poor...). It's a vs. shooter like Twinkle Star Sprites.

I really wish Senko No Ronde could've been released on the PC officially, considering the damn thing runs pretty much on a PC. The online possibilities and modding...

In terms of online, OpenTyrian actually has a function providing you run the right command from it via shortcut. I can't honestly say it's any good outside of a LAN network though, I tried it sometime ago and while it was a very LOL experience I dont think it's exactly what you're looking for.

As I recall Senko No Ronde's multiplayer handling isnt so great either, and I wouldnt really say it runs easily on the PC since it originally ran on the Sega NAOMI hardware. Then again, if XNA games can be coded on Windows PCs you'd think itd be easy enough to port existing 360 titles. Let's hope G.Rev's newest game does a better job on both of those ends.

Try IREM Arcade Hits from DotEmu. It supports local multiplayer.

It really is a shame that more don't support it. The only method there appears to be to playing most shooters online with people is through emulators. However, I asked about LAN support because if you can do LAN, you can also do internet via a LAN network simulator such as Hamachi.

Nope, local as in playing on the same machine.

There used to be an online danmaku RPG called "Valkyrie Sky", but recently they discontinued the service. There simply were too few customers to go around; their only server averaged only about 2,000 users a day, which was barely enough to fill 1/4 of the total capacity. And I'm betting that very few people went for the whole microtransaction deal they had going on with cash items. The novelty on those things wear out after a while, and they tend to be very expensive.
