Play It to release Shikigami 2 in Europe

Post by takohiko »

yep. only with the subtitle "War of the Worlds" appended to it, presumably both to make it appeal to people who wouldn't give a second look to a game called "Castle Shikigami" and as a somewhat shameless cash-in on the recent movie. Coverart... well, it's better than Mobile Light Force.

They probably won't bother with a 60hz mode, though, considering the Euro version of MLF2 and Play It's last shmup release (the 1945 pack) didn't have one.

The man speaks the truth. It surprised me when I started looking, aside from the hard to find Ascii pad, all the third party DC ones I've seen are even worse than the Sega one - as they all imitate it, cheaply. What were Sega thinking?

I wonder why they have all those WWII bomber planes on the cover?
Hopefully they didn't swap out the 8 characters for 8 different types of bomber planes (ala Battle Garegga)....on second thought, that might be pretty cool.

Why do western publishers keep releasing games with covers that have nothing to do with the game and look crappy, when they could simply use beautiful japanese covers?

(obvious answer: they're stupid)

Europe is constantly fucked over with this trash, so it's not unusual.

That better be a mockup cover. Unless someone is trying to actually outdo XS Games when it comes to sucking at localizations.

there's a person (in the blue orb thingy) shooting at the planes (which might actually be insects, now I look at them), so it does at least have something to do with the game.

Sadly, there are worse offenders... :?

Why "Quantum Leap"? Why the exact logo from the show? ABSOLUTELY NO REASON.

Really, it's unintentional. Even if you told them how to do it right they'll still "think of the kids" and yeah, think back to when they were kids.

When Play It did the Strikers 1945 I + II pack it wasn't just the 60htz missing, it had fucked up sound, no save game option and had its name changed to 1945 The Arcade Games.

Yeah, I tried the official Agetec arcade stick, thinking it would be an improvement, but I find I don't have quite the same control as with a d-pad. Right now I'm stuck playing Gunbird 2 with the standard DC pad. Could be worse, but far from ideal.

That sounds awful, though I might prefer it over nothing. (In the US there is only Strikers II for the PS1 (sans tate).)

I wonder why they pay for a new (a bad) cover design when you can get the original cover more interesting for occidental eyes. I hope this people can't release more shmups...

If you want to improve on the dreamcast pad, pick up either a treamcast joypad or ascii fighting type cvs the d pad on them is much better feel a wee bit like saturn due to the button lay out. I've tried em out on shmups and they aren't bad nothing compared to a joystick though.

Yeah, in the case of the PS2 I decided to get Logitech cordless, which has an excellent d-pad.

Least it's accurately ugly.

Because "Shikigami" is already cumbersome enough by itself? ;)

That cover is ugly too. I don't understand why they can't keep japanese titles like they did with Katamary Damacy, instead of converting everything into dumbass-glish.

If you look at the GC and DC covers, they're far better. As the GC version sits in my room, if you wanted, I could upload a picture of it. The dreamcast version is also nice.

I was kind of annoyed that I paid around £40 for the JP version of this when it came out. But now having seen the box I think it was an extra £30 well spent.

Also, you yanks don't always get the best boxes:

Polytheism might scare off the soccer moms?

Anyway, the "War of the Worlds" is ridiculous. The sad thing is that right beside this game on the shelf will probably be dozens of high-selling games with anime cover art on them (Dragonball, etc.) so why are PlayIt still marketing to the west like it's 1985?

I'm just glad we didn't have to go through a 1+ year long thread this time to figure out what the hell this PlayIt release is.

If this actually sells well they better not think their modifications are what were responsible, otherwise our future may hold further translated wonders ("Psyvariar 2: Return Of The King", "Espgaluda: The Fantastic Four"...)

"Gunbird: The Aviator"
"Mushihime-sama: A Bug's Life"
"Kingdom Grand Prix: 2 Fast 2 Furious"

Heck, we could make a whole new thread out of this.
