World of Tanks

Post by IronGiant »

Has anyone had a bash at World of Tanks:

http://worldoftanks.com/

It's in the open Beta phase right now - it's a hell of a lot of fun to play if you like rumbling around in a tank, upgrading it, blowing up other player's tanks (goes without sayijng :) ), etc.

Highly recommended.

Clans are apparently being implemented in the near future, so in theory, yes. :)

Infantry are also due to be introduced (although perspnally speaking I hope that's just an option - I'd much rather simply shoot at tanks than soft, squishy things - it's far more satisfying. )

Remember that when starting the game you have a really snotty little tank, but upgrading it isn't too difficult.

Down the line you can 'buy' better tanks and upgrade them too (if you end up spending all your gold then you can buy more with real money via Paypal - however I haven't found this necessary, I'm just gradually upgrading my tanks which doesn't cost any real money if you are patient and take it steady).

This is easily the most fun and enjoyable game that I've played for yonks; have so far spent about 11 hours on it and I only started playing it a couple of days ago.

Actually Ive got 6 GB remaining space but I think it'd take ages for me to download the file. I think I'll give this game a pass until I clean up the stuff I have on the Bootcamp partition and move all the archive crap to my External harddrive where the good stuff is.

rancor, you really should set up a Bootcamp partition. Not being a Windows nut here but it really does extend the functionality of your Mac.

Is that a lot of storage space? Sorry, it's the year 2011. That is a pack of bubble gum. 1.2 gb is nothing.

Before piecing that together smartass, you could've at least read that I had 6 GB of space on a Bootcamp partition and an internet known for crapping on large downloads which is why I posted this to begin with.

Never had a problem here, some people give up way too easily.

Have you tried re-registering?

Have you tried asking on the forum?

Have you tried emailing the support people?

That's strange, it worked for me. I registered with no issues, its only the download potentially killing my internet that stopped me.

Stupid question: you checked your spam box? It might show up there.

After a few hours the mail finally arrived. And then I played it for about 6 hours straight. Fun game, but damn the starting tanks are weak. Finally got a field gun and now things start to get interesting.

Great to hear that you got the email. :)

Yeah, the starting tanks are weak, but they're supposed to be - it's not difficult to upgrade them though. In fact, after a few hours on the weak and feeble Russian TS-1 I decided to cash in some gold and bought a T-26 and fully upgraded that over time. I then moved onto the T-46 and I'm now on the medium tank, the T-28. And that's only after playing on and off for four days. :)

Soooooo

This looks pretty interesting but i'm confused. What is this? An MMO? is there a subscription, how does it work? Im sooooooo confuuuuussssed (To paraphrase many a teenage camwhore)

Even without my umbillical cable attached I still have over 12,000 plates of fortified armour AND I have my AT Field! There's NO WAY I can lose!!

Yes, it's an MMO.

http://game.worldoftanks.eu/about

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_of_tanks

Currently it's free to play, but when the final version is released you will need to pay for Gold:

http://forum.worldoftanks.com/index.php ... y-payment/

But it's only $10 per month.

I'd be more than happy to pay, I love the game. :D

BTW, ignore the official World of Tanks forum - it mostly appears to be populated by complete idiots. :)

I already pay for two annual subscriptions to EVE Online. World of tanks looks great but I really couldn't say whether or not I want to get into yet another time sink.

Fair enough. It's the only online game that I'm currently playing and that, coupled with the fact it's currently free, is good enough right now. :)

OK, I quit. Matchmaking in this game is fucking terrible. I always get thrown in a battle against enemies 2-3 levels above me. Call me when they fix it. I'm not going to play against enemies I can't even scratch (literally, my gun does zero damage to them).

Oh, and this game also reminded me why I prefer singleplayer. Apparently 99% of gamers don't understand the concept of "group". Ten tanks are better than one, it's not fucking rocket science. But noooo, it's everyone for himself. Hell, they actively AVOID groups, fearing that someone will steal their kill or something (despite the fact that you don't get any points for kills, just for damage, it's right there in the manual they didn't read  ). What the fuck is wrong with you people?

I think you're missing the point - you're supposed to play the game and have FUN. If people swan off and do their own thing then let them, that's their funeral. If you find you're out-gunned then work around it and try and score in other ways, such as scouting.

But I think you're too angry and frustrated to invest any more time in it.

At least you tried.

Personally speaking, I'm still loving the game.

For anyone else wishing to get to grips with the game, this guide is extremely useful:
