That's not true. The ROM has only been hacked to remove the NVRAM check, it doesn't alter the NVRAM contents.
What if operator settings are changed (free play on, demo sound off, etc) would re-write NVRAM, no?

Ah shucks, that's too bad. So then such a DDP-DFK version 1.51 PCB is only playable at the Cave Matsuri events...I see. Talk about such Cave PCB exclusives along with the much desired DDP-Campaign Version PCB.

So there is no need for a working battery to be on the board?

I'm installing a new one on my board due to laziness in switching to free play and no continues every time I power it up.

I'm very interested in trying out Black Label.

It might be the least exciting black label ever, the differences are ever so slight.

True, but they make a huge difference (honest) to the game. Anyone who has the 360 port will know that it's definitely the superior version because it's not so freaking tight with hypers (or, to be more precise, it's not broken and your hyper meter behaves properly.)
Because of that hyper bridging is easier (making chaining easier) and survival easier, all because of that little tweak.

If anyone is expecting so much as a change to a single colour hue though they'll be very disappointed.

Give me an example of another BL that has less differences or changes than DOJ BL does.

I should have worded it better. The hack does not alter the 'magic values' stored in the NVRAM. If the ROM does indeed rewrite the entire NVRAM it's pretty safe to say that this ROM could be used to resurrect a dead BL.

I'm not trying to say what you wrote is wrong, but rather caution existing (working) BL owners from thinking this hacked rom is going to prevent their board from suiciding. We both don't know what this rom will do to NVRAM, regardless of skipping the magic value checks. And if the battery fails, the board will still suicide, and those magic values will be gone regardless.

And if a BL board has already suicided, this rom isn't going to "resurrect" their board, it simply means they can still play the hacked version, just like you could still load the WL version. You'd need a service to actually resurrect the board to play the original BL rom.

Soon I'll be turning my EspGaluda into a Ketsui board.

Why wouldn't it work, as long as you burned and replaced all the ROMs?

I mean, aside from the profit thing, as there would be definite physical differences from a legit Ketsui.

I assume that the protection device prevents romswaps from working. Otherwise I'd like to see some cartridge versions produced for convenience :P

With the correct hardware you could probably convert an EspGaluda board in to a Ketsui. The DOJ PCB differs from those two which would make it somewhat more difficult.

DOJ, Ketsui & Galuda PCBs.

.
Because the ARM (AC27) processor decrypts the image and the key stored inside it is different for each game.

It's pretty easy to get around that. ;) The only way you could identify a Espgaluda board which has been turned into a Ketsui board is to dump its ROMs, though. As far as I can tell they are visually identical.

Would be interesting to see if the ARM processor runs a block checksum on startup (I doubt it, but hey, you never know).

It still brings me to laughter though, this close comfort thing.

Does anyone know who "made" the hack for black label? (wondering if it's actually my code)

Only if you wrote the decryption table that's in the MAME source.
