Meh, this 'update disc' ongoing is a little petty imo I bet most of you don't even experience the bugg. Instead of trying to talk Hucast into a new disc/patch/release we should be thankful that there are developers out there who are still doing great indie releases. Remember, these guys aren't Cave or G.Rev and doing a patch disc would hurt them in terms of finances so lets just accept it for what it is and look forward to another release from them soon.

This 'ongoing' had stopped almost half a year ago. What are you talking about?...

Anyways, that's not the point. He promised an update disc just to get people to leave him alone, hoping everyone will forget about it in the end. If you ask me, he never had and never wil have the intention of releasing an update disc. That should be obvious by now... We have reached the obvious... lol

But by all means, defend him. It's not like he's doing it for the money right?...

I am very glad some people still make some mighty fine homebrew for the system. Beats of Rage to name one. Liked the Drill demo a lot also. Too bad the project got put on hold indefinitely. I am on the other hand not so happy with the way this game and it's release got handled. You wanna take the credit and the money, than you have to take the responsability also. One doesn't go without the other.

And yes, personally, the forced continues do bother me a lot. I'm one of those people that like to go for a perfect run and be able to restart once I made a mistake. The score bug bothered me less though. But that's not the point...

1.) There will be a revision disc as soon as I can afford it

2.) There's a restart option in the game

Played Dux again last night for the first time for many months and realised that actually it's really really nice.
Hucast PR suffered terribly in this thread but at the end of the day the game is goodlooking and fun. I can only get the scoring bug to work intermittently and now that I've forgotten about all that constantly postponed release date and non-existent update patch bullshit i'm actually enjoying it :D

Darn... how did I miss THIS one?

I'll be picking this up next month. Guess I'll have to postpone ordering Last Hope a little longer.

I love the visuals. I much prefer brighter colours to darker ones, and if there's one thing I dislike about many of the shmups we get released here in the UK (the low budget ones liek Psyvarier and Silpheed: Lost Planet) is they're always so dark and boring.

Way to go Hucast.

Posted this in the Custom stick forum also, but hey ..... it's relevant! :P

Hey guys,

Right, here we have something a little bit out of the ordinary and (to me at least) a little bit special. You may or may not know I am a big supporter of the indie scene and one game which I especially like is Dux from Hucast.Net. The game was released last year for the Dreamcast in SE and LE (500 copies only). So after all the latest custom builds for customers, I fancied making a build for me :P
This stick is for the Dreamcast only and has my usual build of custom hand crafted hard maple case with 3mm thk steel top panel and 3mm plexi top panel with of course the underside being the same. Components are Sanwa JLF with octo gate and a single Sanwa OBSF-30 for the start button. Main buttons are Seimitsu PS-14-GN's (with solid pink rim to keep with the primary coloured theme. PCB is hacked from a DC stick and has a VMU internally attached (to allow game saves)

Now the special bit, I asked René Hellwig the Founder of Hucast.NET and developer of Dux, if I could have some official artwork, commission it and then send back for him to sign, and I am pleased to say he agreed :D!!! I know to some this may not be that big-a-deal but to me I am over the moon!! :D

Be great to hear what you think!!

Peace,

-J

Please nobody give me shit for not reading this entire 44 page thread... I just found out about this game. Could somebody just give me a quick descprition of what the problems are with this game? I see that people are getting upset over some features missing, and the lack of an update. Thanks.

There's a bug in the first stage whereby you can land yourself a shedload of points (and the extra lives which come with it). Others may have found a pattern but I found it pretty inconsistent.

Also, you HAVE to continue. There's no timer, you've just gotta keep going until you're out of continues.

It's a pretty cool game if you can overlook those. Heavy on memorising, so you will experience a few cheap deaths, but light on bullet dodging because the game mechanic focuses on "soaking" - you soak up a few bullets with your pod then engage "hyper soaking" which sucks up other bullets and effectively makes you invunerable to bullets, providing there are any on screen to soak up.

Is there an option setting to at least minimize the number of continues you have to use? How many do you start with? I can see why so many people would be annoyed at this.

I just saw this one on CGR, and wow.. it sure *looks* good (by which I mean it also looks like it'd play reasonably well). I'm another person not willing to read the past 40 pages of posts, so.. how bad is the forced continues thing? Can you soft reset (all 4 buttons + start)? How many continues are there that you have to use?

I was wondering if the long promised revision-disc was ever released or at least some download was made available.

I did not enjoy the game that much, but I am curious considering the last comment by RHE is about 10 month old.

I preordered Dux and all the bullshit about the delayed release date got it off to a bad start, and all the bullshit promises about the patch ended it badly too.
Really pretty and also great that it's on Dreamcast.
Gameplay manages to be dull and frustrating at the same time.
Forced continues ridiculous.
Promised patch never materialised making the whole thing seem like an amateur endeavour.
Fast Striker is way better but again not finished properly (bar on screen that shouldn't be there, unintentional debug messages etc).
What's so great is that these releases are for Dreamcast- if they'd been on PC or XBLA I don't think there'd be much love for them at all.
But once again they are very very pretty :D

Most confusing stage 1 background ever. It took a while before I could get my eyes to ignore the blocks flying around in the background that look like they're about to ram into me.

Dux is totally awesome.

Sure it has flaws but I don't really care. One of the better dreamcast shooters.

...yea I know what you're thinking but I don't like most of the DC shooters. Even the legendary mars matrix didn't do much for me.

Psyvariar 2, Triggerheart Exelica, Ikaruga. ...to me the rest is rather meh.

Love this game - even if i get / got some "heat" for my opinion. Nice graphics ( level 2 and 5 ) and
great music. The score-bug don´t bother me mutch - I play my shmups´s for survival and not
for score. I hope to see a sequel ( Redux ? ) in a near future.

Dux is quite cool, I am still very impressed with the production values of both the game and the packaging. The game looks very unique too and I love the stripped down almost abstract level and character design. I felt that the weapon system was a little cluttered however and a little counter intuative, a small critisism of an enjoyable little shooter.

Now that most of the drama is over or given up on. There is a good game here. But it's really frustrating to not be able to config the controller the way I want to. Especially since I can't stand using the DC controller.

RHE must've established DUX was perfectly playable with preset controls, kind of like he did with Last Hope.

Yea I know. Hopefully he used some of the profits to buy a Dreamcast joystick. Call it a business expense for "testing" purposes.

DUX is quite nice, but I would have loved to be able to play the game with a remixed soundtrack. would have been nice. Still I spent my monies on the LE version of the game and I still think while there are a couple of flaws, its a great shooter.
