Where is Novice Mode in Futari (360)?
Where is Novice Mode in Futari (360)?
Maybe I'm just blind, but I can't find Novice Mode at all. I have the Platinum version and Black Label DLC installed if that matters. I assume it's not called "Training"?
Re: Where is Novice Mode in Futari (360)?
Select Arrange mode, then just move left or right and its there.
Re: Where is Novice Mode in Futari (360)?
Thanks, I just found it. How strange that they put it under Arrange. :/

Probably cause it shouldn't existAnnoyboy wrote:Thanks, I just found it. How strange that they put it under Arrange. :/

Oh come on Vyxx, that's not fair. Novice may not have much of a challenge, but I maintain it's a great way to introduce and ramp up new players.Vyxx wrote:Probably cause it shouldn't existAnnoyboy wrote:Thanks, I just found it. How strange that they put it under Arrange. :/

He is right though, they way they almost hid the novice option kind of made it seem that way to me.

That mode's biggest challenge is actually finding it in the first place. :P

I like the fact Reco and Palm look embarrassed on the Novice selection screen.

Even after being able to 1cc Original, I still really enjoy playing Novice Ultra every so often. And like Njiska pointed out, it's an excellent way to introduce new players to the genre.

This has backfired on me twice actually. I've introduced non-shump-o's to Futari and DFK via novice modes, both occasions with different players. Both players initially had fun, but after learning they were playing a simplified version of the "real" game they were turned off. They then both wanted to try the main game, got slaughtered, and never wanted to play again.Anesthetize wrote:Even after being able to 1cc Original, I still really enjoy playing Novice Ultra every so often. Heh yeah, I know what you mean. I visited a good friend of mine who has minimal shmupping experience last weekend. He had played Futari's novice modes and enjoyed them, so I showed him EspII's novice modes, and he seemed to like them as well. After a couple of runs, though, he said, "Ok, time for the real thing, let's do some Black Label!" I left the room for a sec, and when I came back he was back on novice mode.8 1/2 wrote:This has backfired on me twice actually. yeah, the scrolling really is a pain. is it just me or does the screen (including you) scroll, but the bullets don't? so if you want to dodge to the left and the other player makes the screen scroll to the right you don't move an inch compared to the bullet and get hitgs68 wrote:I imagined Novice 2-player as a good way to get new players into the game...until I discovered that scrolling is awkward with a 2nd player.
Re: Where is Novice Mode in Futari (360)?
Shmups are just NOT two player games. I've never enjoyed it personally. It's just confusing and messes up both player's scoring. I've never understood "casual shmupping," as in, "let's just put on some Futari and kill some time." Seems like wasted effort.

Nha, i think you are wrong. At least on 2nd gen hardware, cave first use the move increment and then apply the scrolling shift (the odd thing being that the shift is read from a pre-calculated table, using an index) and that for both players in turn before any input is refreshed.Naryoril wrote:yeah, the scrolling really is a pain. is it just me or does the screen (including you) scroll, but the bullets don't? so if you want to dodge to the left and the other player makes the screen scroll to the right you don't move an inch compared to the bullet and get hitgs68 wrote:I imagined Novice 2-player as a good way to get new players into the game...until I discovered that scrolling is awkward with a 2nd player.
But the 2 player scroll is a mindeffer. It hurts my brains.
