Who’s That Flying?! - PSN mini shmup

Post by bob »

Hi there!

New psn shmup available: Who’s That Flying?!
Video available at this site: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/11/ ... r-psp-ps3/

edit: pls copy the complete link... board parser brakes it because of ' character.

I think it looks interesting... but the video does not show enough for me to decide if I like it or not.
It's only 5Euro, so probably easy to try and not that bad when it sucks.

Has anyone on this boards this game already and can comment on it?

Thanks for any info/feedback about this game! :D

Cheers!

I actually bought it earlier this week and gave it a short try.
It's pretty funny for a short while but my enthusiasm didn't last much longer than 10 minutes, so I can't comment too much on it.

Yea, thats exactly the reason why I didn't buy it.
I feared that I would only play it once. And since I don't have much time at the moment and when I have time I'm busy playing Strikers 1945 the possibility that this happens is quite high. :D

Maybe I will try it later this month and give feedback here.
If someone has to say something about it any news are appreciated

It's worth buying for the innovation alone. The concept of 100% shotdown is a lot of fun. There is a lot of pattern variety, which kept me interested to the end. The story also has a few chuckles to it.

There are downsides that keep it in the novelty category. You can't really play the main story mode competitively and you can't really fail it. You get 50 lives/misses for some stupid reason, but an instant Game Over from boss fight with an arbitrary timer and the boss is designed with long periods where it sits invulnerable for lengthy attack animations. 1 Bullet pattern in the entire game. Endless mode I got bored before it got challenging. Challenge mode is pretty nice. I've been saving that for some quick plays on the road since I'm blowing through that pretty quick. I think the special attack 3-level bar in the bottom left wasn't programmed correctly.

It's worth buying because I haven't really seen this concept done beyond flash games. It has a lot of that gradius pre-stage feel which is nice. I'd just like this concept to be tackled by a developer who actually plays STGs.

Did anyone spell PC, STG and Steam? Those are the invocation spells to summon me inside a thread. :P

I'll be sure to try the demo if there is any but since it's quite cheap, I might buy it altogether. No draconian DRM, right?!?!?!?

No 3rd party DRM (as far as I can tell from the sales page) but no demo eather

Ill probably wont get this atm, theres just way too many shmups (and other games) coming out in Feb. Plus im going to be going on some work related training this month which looks like ill be having to fork out £255 to get a license, which is a lot to fork out when I dont even have a job atm :/

If I was a women ild become a sex worker to feed my STG addiction (JK)
EDIT Been a PC gamer im already been metaphoracly been butt fucked so whats the difference

You take it cool and with style. We are here to chew bubblegum and kick some asses. 8) (bwahahaha! Sorry, had to)

I'll see how things go this week and if I finally score a job (interviews incoming), I'll probably celebrate by buying this and comment how it run and plays.

Hmmm, thx for posting that gameplay vid as it seems ive had the wrong impression about the game. I was expecting something like Air Zonk but Whos that Flying?! is more like the GBA rpg/stg Sigma Star Saga but without the rpg bits.

Definatly not my cup of tea or anybody else who isnt under 10 years old or hasnt played a good shmup in their lives, just flash shmups. This shmup is for ppl who dont like shmups if you catch my drift.

I cant wait until rockin android start selling games on steam as Valve are in desperate need of a good example of what a stg should be like. (knowing my luck RA wont bother selling any STGs on steam and only bother with more popular genres)

Actually, Flying Hamster is also playable on the PS3. ;)
All "Minis" have info if they're playable or not on the PS3, and both Who's that Flying? and Flying Hamster are.

Looks at PS version info
•Story mode with full animated cutscenes detailing the trial of the Guardian of Earth!
•Five unique stages and over 40 individual levels!•4 Infinite mode challenges to unlock with local highscore boards!
•Challenge mode with 24 unique trials to unlock!
•17 different enemy types!•Masses of bonus artwork and awards!
•Huge finishing moves!
•Combos, medals. Power-ups and more…!

Then takes a look at the Steam version:
■Story mode featuring 15 levels over 5 unique stages
■11 enemy types
■5 gigantic boss battles
■4 Infinite Mode Stages
■24 Challenge Mode Stages
■14 Bonus Magazine articles to unlock
■12 Glittering Awards to discover
■6 Dramatic Courtroom cutscenes
■Steam Achievements, Global Leaderboards & Steam Cloud Support
■Controller Support

I wonder if the 2 versions really are different or that the publishers has been using their artistic license for one of these lists.

This isnt really about this game but im curious about Steams pricing policy between different countries, the PS version is $5.99 and the steam version in the UK is £5.99 which converts to around $9.70. Anyone care to tell me what this game is up for in their countries who have the $, Euro and Auz $ etc

It's $5.99 usd here.

The videos make it look nice but I can't quite scratch the flash-like feeling... And I think there is some inertia on the player character? (maybe I'm wrong) Also, "don't let enemies escape". That's some Cloudphobia right there.

Those descriptions are usually priceless. More than often they are plain terrible so I wouldn't pay attention to them.

Look what it says: "5 unique stages". The rest is blah blah blah. Although I do understand we might be getting the short end of the stick...

I had hoped the era of publishers pricing US and UK games exactly the same numbers and ignoring exchange rates was comming to an end. How much is it in euros?
Atleast some gamers in mainland europe can get a good deal from console game importing due to flucturing exchange rates. Even though the publishers are fighting back http://blog.hardcoregaming101.net/2010/ ... n-buy.html

I know what you mean. I highly suspect that this might be the devs first game after "graduating" from flash shmups / games. As everything from the looks, to the game mechanics and design screams flash game to me.

I wondered why being flash-like is not desirable, unless it is sort of an rip-off.

Wait a sec first. From my experience, most flash shmups isn't exactly bad. I wondered if this means I am more tolerant in terms of gaming taste.
There's no standards in shmups. Only what most people prefers.
Euroshmups are inferior, but not all of them sucks.
Jap shmups are superior, but not all of them great.

I bought WTF? when it was released and got bored with it fairly quickly. In the previous game by the same developers, Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess, it was actually fun to repeat levels because they were short and it was easy to jump from one to the next. In WTF?, the levels are too long and repetitive, and while you're encouraged to go for a no-miss run in each level, it's not actually fun to do. Plus, beating the bosses requires some QTE gameplay elements that I guess hardcore shmup fans would disapprove of...

Still, I see there was a new shmup released on the PSN store today (the EU store anyway) - MOZOX Space Salvager:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXD6R20pceg

Yours for just £1.79 (or €1.99). Yeah. I bet you can't wait.

(By the way, is it worth resurrecting the general PSP shmup thread? I found an old one but the last post was in 2008, and it might be useful to keep track of the recent releases.)
