Street Fighter II 20th Anniversary Party - South West Tokyo:

Post by JAPJAC »

Do you remember reading about and gushing over those glorious screen shots of Street Fighter II (PCB) for the first time in Mean Machines magazine? Do you remember thinking it must be blinding for them to make an exception by covering and banging on about an arcade game in the first place? Did you rush to your nearest arcade that had one on location to see what all the early fuss was about whilst remembering how bad Street Fighter was? Did you put up with the Super Famicom version (and thus was over a 100 quid poorer) but at the same time save and save until the PCB dropped in price so you could play the real thing on your own SuperGun or arcade machine at home? Were you pretty handy at it and had a reputation at school of being a bit sly slick at SFII? Did you bunk off school with your mates to play it down the arcade? Was your life never quite the same from this period on? These are some of my cherished memories, if you have similar ones:

Date: 19/03/11.
Start: 19:00.
Location: English Pub, Meguro Line.
Cost: Y3,000 all-you-can-drink from their on tap draught selection.

Entertainment on a big screen:

Street Fighter II' Turbo: Hyper Fighting - Capcom Power System CHANGER version.
Street Fighter Zero 2 - Capcom Play System II version.
Street Fighter Zero 3 - Cacpom Play System II version.

Celebrate the biggest coin-op sensation ever!

Does anyone get the impression that these posts are nothing but flagrant egoism rather than a genuine meaningful invitation?

You could count on one hand the number of guys on this forum who could actually make this 'party'. :?

Was the SFC/SNES version even a bad port?

Not at all. I don't think he meant it to sound that way, I think he just means it wasn't the same as playing the arcade. It was a fantastic stand in though (if you weren't playing the PAL version at least.)

I guess it would be considered bad by modern standards, now that we expect ports to be damn near pixel/frame/sample-perfect, but for the time it was quite good.

Huh, you should advertise this on a site like http://www.gaijingamers.com since there would probably be quite a few people interested in attending it. I can advertise it if you don't want to, we've been thinking of having another get-together in the future anyway.

Amazing footage, seems like both people enjoyed it.

Just a reminder.

After recent events some might like a pleasant evening supping and playing some SFII.

ALL Tokyoites more than welcome from this board, no matter what languages spoken.

Cheers.

Good on gameplay and BGM, surely. I did prefer the Genesis version FM-synth ST, which was awfully close to the arcade except for missing 1-2 sound channels. The only knock on Gen SFII-SCE would be the voices which have that Fast Food Joint Drive Thru effect. Shame there wasn't a PC Engine Arcade Card version of Super SFII. *drool* That would've been as good as it got on 16-bit.

I wasn't too good at Vs. Battles then but I sure made up for it in 1P mode- usually taking down Bison on my 1st credit.

Remember the 3DO SSFII Turbo? I was a little disappointed in that one. The CPU AI was lame, and the parallax was missing. If the 3DO had a couple more megs of RAM, things could've been better. Apparently 2MB of DRAM and 1MB VRAM couldn't cut it. Now the ultimate port of ST would be Hyper SFII Anniv. Ed. (the one that appeared on PS2 and OG Xbox, including all the extra character styles like Champion & original Super).

LOL @ M.Bison's win quote: "Get lose, you don't compare with my powers". :D Classic.

Yeah, the 3DO version was a disappointment. All the old characters were inexplicably missing from the 3DO version too and a few character animations are also gone. It's funny how this version was highly praised back in the day (guess it was for the faithful graphics and FMT arrange soundtrack) when it only does a fair job representing the game.

AE has some issues with claw's wall dives, o.Sagat's tiger recovery, and old character throw softening that prevent it from being used for tourney-level ST (not to mention speed differences). The most accurate port of ST is the DC version but really, people just stick with the CPS2 original nowadays.
