Any good arcades in Hong Kong?

Post by Snake »

Will be in Hong Kong for a few weeks, and wondering if there are any good arcades relatively close to the city center. Shmups are ideal of course, but I'm also into fighting games.

Thanks to anyone who has a recommendation.

Hope you're into KOF, if you are you'll be in heaven.

I posted in a thread on AO a long time ago when a guy was asking about HK, hope you don't mind this copy and paste (it's all still relevant:)

There are Arcades everywhere in HK. Keep a look out for suspicious signs - a lot tend to be basement level. THey have good taste there too, and you'd better brush up on your KOF skillz. If you're there for 2 weeks+ you'll find tons no doubt.

Apart from games -
-Get on the peak tram mid afternoon so you can see the view by day and night. There's a Japanese restaurant in the peak tower - book seats when you get there for a window seat and an evening slot. Apart from regular Japanese dishes they do lobster too, and it's damn reasonable considering where you are and what you're getting.

-There's a Hong Kong city light display every night afai remember. Get the star ferry from central harbour - it's dirt cheap (like a $2 to cross) - and that will take you over the waters to Kowloon where you can see the city light show (should be 8pm, but double check it)

-You can take junks across the bay too and drink wine/beer, and enjoy the sights - but it's usually overpriced tbh.

-Nathan Road, Kowloon - Welcome to blade runner. Good luck if you ever make it out alive. I'm yet to manage to walk the length of Nathan Road without giving up and cabbing it back. There is an enormous shopping centre called the 'Golden Arcade' (I think!) crammed with games shops and figures.

-The Planetarium in Kowloon was a nice diversion - reasonable too, and easy to find just off of the ferry port.

-Disneyland is a must - it's so damn cheap. Not the biggest park, but plenty of fun. Space Mountain is the best ride. You have to make a day of it really.

- The mountain Bhudda is amazing. You can get there by train (final destination on the line) and then some nutty skyride that goes over the mountains. Be sure to check it out on the tourist info when you get there but don't wait until the attraction starts to close to leave - you could be queuing for hours to get cable car back apparently.

-Mid Level Escalators - within Hong Kong central, the worlds longest escalators, heading right into the mountainside to serve the residents all the way up there. Worth getting on for a while, but it's about 40 mins to the top and not much up there. There's tons on the way though, and streets to stop off at. Near the beginning is a market street full of traders selling seafood. You can't miss it. Get in there for a WonTon soup in one of the traditional cafe's. It's about £1 and worth buying 2 bowls for. Really good.

-In fact, all the food in HK is amazing - that's one of the best parts of travelling there. Loads of options in the culinary dept. Causeway Bay is the best for this - there's a Thai restaurant about 6 floors up a building nearby to the station which is sorta jungle themed. It's cool, and like everything else, damn cheap compared to what you'd pay in the UK.

-Causeway bay is like little Tokyo. It's full of girls shopping til they drop and busy as hell - but something to take in.

I hope you enjoy your trip mate. You should google all this stuff for proper info. Have a great time and get us some pictures!

get your ass to the Golden Arcade for sure. Its right by a MTR station entrance so you should be able to get the train and easily make your way around there with ease. There are not many white folk around this part of HK though so expect a couple of funny looks you fucking gwailo lol.

Should've asked me while I was there (I'll be back but you'll be gone by then).

Not sure about the city center but I know quite a bit about Kowloon. If you're even in Kowloon bay, check out "Virtual Zone". Hardly any shooters there but damn, it's a rythm game and fighting game bonanza. Check out the high score list for the blocks game btw, you might see something familiar. =P Also in Diamond Hill, Hollywood plaza, there's a decent arcade. There also used to be a bunch in Mong Kok, but they changed the layout and the ones I could find are slowly turning into gambling fests.

I've yet to explore the arcades on the island side. There's a user on here from HK, SAM I think. Got any advice, SAM? ^_^

SAM hasn't been active on this forum for a long time. Sadly, my own knowledge of HK arcades is outdated by several years. To add to Skykid's post, there are tons of crappy dumpy little arcades everywhere, but the indeed the huge ones with good game selection are usually underground so you have to keep an eye out.
