Can't beat Reign In Blood though... That's an all time classic!

Given that metalcore was spawned from from hardcore bands who listened to too much thrash, it's nonsensical to say you hear one and not the other. Also, I hope I'm not the only one tired of the way metalcore is thrown around pretty much indiscriminately as a catchall by metal fans who don't like breakdowns.

mmm, no. Metalcore was spawned from a mixture of hardcore and melodic death metal (At The Gates). And what other genre of music would have breakdowns in it other than Metalcore?

Well I'm not really trying to hate on this guy's band. I just don't think that the thrash description is fitting.

And based on your name "Heartwork" who knows, I could like your band. Heartwork is one of my all time favorite records.

What used to be termed metallic hardcore was all thrash influenced and goes back to crossover. Listen to COC, Cro Mags, DRI or Integrity and it becomes painfully obvious.

To me such record is 'Darkness Descends' by Dark Angel. This is a masterpiece to be guided by!

yeah, DRI is good shit. Thrash and hardcore together, in a listenable state. They are way different than modern "metalcore" bands. I already stated what I consider to be a pretty commonly accepted definition of what bands originated the thrash sound. Sure a given metalcore band may say they are thrash influenced, but of the metal core bands I've listened to (which I try to avoid doing) I don't hear it. Metalcore bands are known for breakdowns, thrash is known for speed (i'm generalizing). I don't see the connection.

This discussion is making me want to start a thread for any members who may be in bands past/present who want to show them.

Heartwork, you gonna post? You made me curious. I'm thinking about posting mine, but I don't want to do it in this guys thread. After this I'm not going to further derail this topic.

Apologies to barmski.

Not to sound like a dick but honestly, if you haven't listened to much of it (or actively avoid listening to bands with that tag) then you probably don't know what defines it, nor would you be able to see the connection.

I've heard enough I think to form an opinion. When I was in a band from about 2004-2007 (we played more traditional thrash) probably about 50% of the bands we played shows with were crappy local metalcore bands. We played a couple shows with Winter Soltice. I remember them being signed to Metal Blade at the time, which was a big deal to us. I think they broke up after that one album though. Anyway, I guess I'm going to have to agree to disagree with you.

edit* I guess I'll concede that there are influences, but I just don't like breakdowns..

Firing the derailer cannon.

This is my band: http://www.myspace.com/gfap We play metalcore or progressive hardcore or whatever. It's unabashedly hardcore influenced, probably moreso than it is metal influenced. I grew up listening to Saetia, Raein, Orchid, pg.99 and other 90s emotive hardcore stuff, so that's still a huge part of my musical background.

I listened to the songs.. they are pretty metalcore-ish, without the clean singing choruses those metalcore types enjoy. There is some potential there, I would like some more variation with the drums, maybe more technical guitar work.. Not terrible.

What the hell would you know about music? It's not a game soundtrack, so you must be lost, right?

I loathe the cheesy clean vocal bridges that a lot of bad metalcore insists on using. There will be none of that in my band ever.

The new stuff we've been working on is a little bit more mathcore-feeling. Lots of wacky blastbeats and shit, thanks to our new drummer, who's played jazz for the last few years. I really dig the new stuff, I'll probably bump this thread or something when we upload some of the new songs. We're in the studio in a couple weeks to record our second EP.

I take it this is in response to my namedropping of the aforementioned emotive hardcore bands? Are you into that sort of shit?

I like it...its cool. Hearing this I'm immediately taken back and thinking of the band Watchtower (Ron Jarzombek; Guitars) and early Annihilater(Jeff Waters).

If you haven't heard much of these bands, please give them a listen, as I'm sure that you'll like them.
Also...(shameless plug) give Vodkatron a listen as well!) :D

Watchtower album "Controll and Resistance". Like Rush, but on SPEED!
Annihilater "Alice in Hell".
Coroner
Helstar
Believer
Look out for those. Youtube em!!!

Yes Annihilator is good stuff. I'm suprised that this band reminds you of it though.
