Re: Calling all shmup fans who also like thrash
UUUUUUUUGGGGH!
I listened to the first song. It's not thrash, it's metalcore. The vocalist is terrible. After the initial tremolo bits the riffs devolved into the mindless, percussive breakdown style favored by metalcore bands, FOR THE DURATION OF THE SONG. At least it didn't follow verse-chorus-verse-chorus structure, I was pleasantly surprised by that, but the rest of the song was garbage. Probably won't be listening to any of the other songs, as there's better bands out there who've been influenced by shooters.
At least they have good taste in games.

HAHAHAHAHAHA
I would have to disagree with everything you've said as I hate metalcore with a passion and I wrote all the songs! I'm not really sure how you couldn't hear any thrash in there but never mind.
The ferocity with which you depsise my band did amuse me I have to say.
Good job sir

I came into this thread expecting hobos to already be gathering. I read trash, honestly!

Re: Calling all shmup fans who also like thrash
I've listened to each of the songs. The first one sounds really "metalcorish". That should not be a problem because thrash is an origin influence of metalcore AFAIK.
The shouter uses a Machine Head vocal style. I'm a big death fan and therefore I'm missing the brutality in his voice. If you are going for thrash singing its ok.
You are thrashing good but IMHO your songs are missing a personal note. 2 min after listening I could not remember any riffs or noticable parts which differentiate you from other trash bands.
I would rate Danmaku 7 out of 10.

I'm not really interested in getting caught up in the debate on how to classify/label this music.
Anyway - The band has impressive pedigree. Danmaku's on my radar.

Re: Calling all shmup fans who also like thrash
well thanks all for checking it out.
I thought I would put it out there for fellow shmuppers to check just out of interest as there aren't many shmuppy bands that I have heard of at least, plus I knew there were a few metallers lurking around the forum.
Love it or hate it I don't really mind. I think it's ace, but then I would as it's my band!
If you like it then please tell others who you think might also like it if you don't fair enough it's all good.
Share the love and all that

Re: Calling all shmup fans who also like thrash
Just had a quick listen, and i hate to break it to you, but it doesn't get any more metalcore than this.
cut off the double bass and perhaps get some d-beat going, adjust riffs accordingly.
maybe shouts a bit higher so it doesnt sound so much like every metalcore band on this planet.
but other than that, not too bad.
really nice recording quality.

Re: Calling all shmup fans who also like thrash
Listened to the lot - colour me impressed! Excellent production, tight playing and most definitely more DM influenced than br00talz. Not a huge fan of the vocals though, bit too modern/clean sounding for my liking.
Like the Bleed-esque rythm of 'Turn Up the Gas', the opening riff also has a sniff of something familiar to it, but I can't for the life of me put my fishy finger on what it is - ah! Just came to me, in a vision most depraved!
...Angel Corpse - 'Stormgods Unbound', not accusing you of a rip off, just sounds somewhat similar.
There's plenty of thrash influence on 'Read it and Weep'. Definitely the thrashiest of the lot, at least to these ears, whose ever they are.
Is that a RR1 you're playing in the photo? If so, can I have it? I'll cover postage, it would be the least I could do after such a generous offer.

Re: Calling all shmup fans who also like thrash
From listening, seems like heavy pantera influence with anselmoish vocals. Not bad.
Re: Calling all shmup fans who also like thrash
It is indeed an RR1 all the way from the Guitar Centre in Hollywood, I picked it up there when I toured there in 2008, and no, you can't have it because it's mine so therethrone_of_wolves wrote: Is that a RR1 you're playing in the photo? Thanks all for listening. I thought the vocals were quite anselmo-ish too which as far as i'm concerned is completely bo, but obviously not to everybodies taste.
Thank god we've got off the metalcore/not metalcore topic (*holds breath wiating for the next post telling me it's metalcore*).
Re: Calling all shmup fans who also like thrash
love the logo....like the riffs....singer is.....not great....he screams 'ok'...but anything beyond that sounds forced and uncomfortable as i hear it
what am i listening to though? its only the 2 of you in the band, so are you using studio musicians or is it all sequenced for the drums and bass?
also is it 2 seperate guitar tracks or the same one doubled?
sounds decent though....keep at it....

I just gave some of it a listen, and I'm feeling optimistic about future music from you guys :) I didn't dislike it, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd expect to enjoy some good thrash.

Re: Calling all shmup fans who also like thrash
Thrash is such a widely used term it's hard to please everyone. When I think of thrash I think of stuff like Gang Green, The Spermbirds, early pre-hip hop Beastie Boys, Bad Brains, perhaps Bomb Disneyland the Angry Samoans, and even stuff like early Descendents, along with speedy Japanese hardcore stuff like Exhale.
Perhaps my definition is a bit misguided, but this wasn't what I was expecting.
Still - I did like it a lot. I'll listen too it a few more times that's for sure. Thanks barmskii.

Re: Calling all shmup fans who also like thrash
Sounds badly metalcore as fuck... Guitar sounds a bit limp wristed and scratchy...
Ah well, better luck next time... LMAO!
Not really, of course! Sounds about as metalcore as Madonna sounds like Primus! It's got no ghey metalcore whiny vox. Phil Anselmo all the way!

Hell yeah man, I wanna hear more! Fuck what genre its in, its rockin. I'm more of a prog rock guy myself (Tool is my crack) but I like it all the same.
Makes me wanna follow suit... but I'm a drummer with few musician friends, so that is unlikely.

Re: Calling all shmup fans who also like thrash
i can see where people calling it metalcore are coming from, but i'd pull it way more to the thrash site myself.
it's okay to listen to, but as said before, there's nothing outstanding about it.
>>"omg breakdowns"
yeah their chords a pretty similar to the stuff you hear in breakdowny music, but there's neither WHAM mixed with them nor is there WHAM following up to them. therefore it's no real breakdown-stuff per-se.
edit: oh this is a necro thread

Re: Calling all shmup fans who also like thrash
I can see where you are coming from with a couple of those bands, but I'd still place them in the hardcore camp in music style and scene. Props for mentioning Gang Green. Its all about applecore though, Acid Reign ftw!spadgy wrote:Thrash is such a widely used term it's hard to please everyone. Ugh, scream vocals = bleck!
The guitar and drums are alright, but Turn up the Gas has way to slow a tempo for good thrash. Second track is definitely the better. Again the vocals do nothing for me.

Re: Calling all shmup fans who also like thrash
Agreed. The term thrash gets thrown around alot. This is not thrash metal. The thrash label as it was originally used would apply to late 80's early 90's bands like:spadgy wrote:Thrash is such a widely used term it's hard to please everyone. Just kidding, this sounds okay. I can't see where the 'Danmaku' theme is from though.

Calling the Beastie Boys thrash is just wrong. Their early stuff is quite heavily punk inspired and some tracks like Cooky Puss could even be classed as light funk. I think what you're calling trash is more punk, maybe even hardcore, but definitely punk not metal. Perhaps this is a cultural interpretation difference?spadgy wrote:Thrash is such a widely used term it's hard to please everyone.
