Help me discover childhood memories for my friend

My friend was trying to describe a game to me, but it's on some very loose memories. I was playing Guwange and he said he used to play a game like that back in the day. I can't get a good enough definition out of him if it was an actual shmup, or an overhead run'n'gunnner. He said you could change weapons throughout, with both a lightning and a "boomerang looking one". He claims of a medieval setting, possibly fighting monsters, with kinda serious overtones. You are also a person on the ground, rather than a ship. Said it was either on sega saturn or sega cd, but he could be wrong. Guy might have worn a brown cloak.

I can't think of anything. At first I thought it was Undeadline, but we are in America, and I showed him screen shots, to which he denied it.

Any help?
