Any other games like Assault Suits Valken?

I think it's worth it, though to be honest I just use emulators. Solid gameplay and a decent challenge compared to many SNES platformers. I also like mech games where the robot/suit seems heavy and clunky. I'm aware that the story is edited in the US release but I personally don't care too much about that.Puddleglum wrote:I never heard of this game, but I see the US version is available on Virtual Console. I assume it's worth the $8 if you're asking around about similar games?
The Astro Port guys obviously liked it since the suit in their game is a near-replica of the Valken/Cybernator one.

Just played Final Zone on Kega Fusion and it reminded me of Wolf Team's own Granada (similar controls, it was also a computer game etc.), except Final Zone at least here and there runs at more than 30 fps. Perhaps Kega Fusion will allow you to get rid of the framerate drops. It's a very slick game, despite the drab colour palette and choppy animations, gets the Japanese mecha folklore right. The music is certainly above average.
Moreover, Assault Suits Valken for the PS2 isn't even half as bad a game as the internet people tend to claim. Actually I think it's pretty good. It just seems to be suffering the misfortune of its small print's majority being purchased by angry people.
Also, Final Zone makes me wonder how on Earth Konami managed to screw the Project Overkill controls this bad. Just how exactly difficult is to make the dude go UP when I pres UP on a joypad? Final Zone, quite astonishingly, coupled this feature with the isometric view successfully six years before Project Overkill came out.

Armed Seven is a bit like it. More shmup, but elements of ASV. Free demo on my site.

Granada is also on the X68000, and might be more enjoyable there.Obiwanshinobi wrote:Just played Final Zone on Kega Fusion and it reminded me of Wolf Team's own Granada (similar controls, it was also a computer game etc.), except Final Zone at least here and there runs at more than 30 fps.

Yeah, I thought so. I've just yet to break the ice of emulation.Ed Oscuro wrote:Granada is also on the X68000, and might be more enjoyable there.

The rumour has it that the PSX port has got less slowdown. I didn't notice any. Not that either platform should choke on this game.

Me and a buddy started playing Metal Warriors just the other night. I've had it for awhile, but just now started playing it seriously. I'm really enjoying it. Makes me definitely want to sticky this thread and get into such games a little more...

Actually one of my best video game finds. Got it for 2.99, mint condition at a local video game shop. That kind of stuff doesn't happen to me too often...Ed Oscuro wrote:Did you get it for eBay prices or are we talking emulation?drauch wrote:Me and a buddy started playing Metal Warriors just the other night. Not really the same genre, but Iwanaga is pretty damn good, and somewhat similar I guess

Rather unlike Assault Suits Valken, but Psycho-Nics Oscar has got nice looking mecha design and solid gameplay. The arcade flyer suggests there is a bloke inside that thing. I like its gentle, washed out yet rich colour palette. Impressive shading all around.
