You mean the 1st or the 2nd loop of DOJ? Because the first isn't that hard.

I don't suppose anyone has had the game lock up on them when running stage 4 in training mode?

Both times it happened at different points in the level but it was after using a continue, I was also holding 'A' at the time and as the character came back onto screen it locked up soon after. Obviously it doesn't happen every time and I've not yet had it happen in arcade mode either.

Both times I had to hard-reset the machine.

... and now it's freezing up all the time. Every time it's after using a continue, can happen on any level. It's the only game doing it as well.

Do I assume as usual that I'm the only person having this problem in training mode?

1st loop. You reckon Guwange is harder than DOJ's first loop? Hmm, I didn't think so, but maybe I'm just approaching them with the wrong mindset.

I guess that depends how you attack the game.

In DOJ, shotia+c-type gives you a wide ass shot to clean stages, plus an insane amount of bombs you can use to plan your 1-all without too much effort. As soon as you want to score it's a different beast though.

Yeah, well, stage 6 in Guwange is definitely harder than whatever DOJ's 1st loop throws at me, and stage 5 and 6 bosses are also much worse. And I've only reached the dojo guy once on a credit. :(

Most of DOJ's bosses in the 1st loop are challenging, but reasonably easy; they take a single bomb as an aid in the worst case as a finishing move (I've no-missed/no-bombed all of them except King Bee, but I usually tend to use safer strategies to ensure a clear), and King Bee is a joke compared to Guwange-sama and the last form.

That's true, but, bomb business aside, DOJ is just easier to manage when played for survival. There are close to no chokepoints that you can't solve by pointblaking with C-shot. As a proof, I'm currently working on a DOJ BL clear with B-E (it doesn't have many bombs at its disposal, as you can guess), and I've nearly reached 1-5 boss so far — that's with stupid deaths on parts where I don't usually plan to die or bomb. For the record, I've only spent ~30 hours on the game, WL and BL combined. I've never cleared an arcade mode on a non-Pachi game before either.

As you can see, surviving well also made it easier to beat Skykid's score, even though the only conscious attempt to score that takes place in my runs is accumulating 5 hypers for the pop-corn-idor™ in 1-2 for easy 20+ million.

I don't know guwange enough to really answer. The lack of a wide shot must be a bitch for stages when you're doing survival runs.
However there's the whole "slowdown bullets" and bullet cancelling that I'm sure is useful when mastered for survival. But in doj if you play for survival you don't spam hypers, so rank doesn't raise much. Rank is huge in DOJ. IIRC the standart fare also raises it (not using bombs, etc).

I wasn't actually comparing the two games difficulty, as much as I was just saying "this is another hard game I had trouble with". They are obviously quite different difficulty-wise.

Surely I can't be the only one the game is locking up for after continuing!?

Continue, launch your shikigami as quickly as you can and it locks up quite often. Happened at least 5 times today.

Can someone please test this for me in training mode?

In the process of learning the game you'll probably find it's quite normal.

How very presumptuous of you however to include all members on this site in your elitist creed and way of thinking.

I haven't noticed any such issues with Guwange, though if you really think it's the game's fault (and our fault for being elitist) and not your fault for not 'learning2play', there's always Cave's twitter account. Tell them there.

Nothing nasty, but bitching at fellow members and acting like a troll will not fix your issue, telling the right people about it (Cave) will.

At least that's an answer to what I asked, so thanks for that. Is there no proper way of contacting them? because I can't work out what the hell you are meant to do on twitter.

Frankly though when someone posts a stupid response as above (a response that serves no other purpose than trying to massage his own ego in public) I think my reply was pretty justified.

As far as I know Cave only has Facebook and Twitter pages, but they've been known to acknowledge people's complaints etc from their pages so it's your best bet.

Frankly, I don't have Facebook or Twitter myself. There was an email around here posted some time ago but you're going to have to look through the threads for that, I'm sure it's been mentioned in this thread alone a fair few times.

Even though Guwange has a lot of potential to make the game easier via extends and bullet slowdown, managing the techniques required to make it happen takes skill adding to the overall difficulty. On the other hand, Guwange is the kind of a game that gets easier the better you play (aside from boss milking), because of this. DOJ, on the other hand, becomes gradually harder due to a pretty harsh rank curve and the second loop.

But, as I said, Guwange is not among Cave's hardest games, I'd put it right in the middle with DOJ's second loop being somewhat lower (but not among the easiest either).

I apologise, let me redress this:

If the game is freezing at any point then notifying Cave, as already suggested, is a good shout.
Although my original response was curt, it's still correct: if you want to get the most out of Guwange or any shmup, see how far you can progress on one credit at a time. The better you get and the further you travel on a single try is a far more rewarding experience than seeing how few continues you can use to finish the game, honest.
If it seems that that's an elitist suggestion because it doesn't reflect your own feelings about the game, I assure you that it's considered be the correct method of tackling shmups if you want to get the most out of them. Most of the forum plays in this manner because it's a fairly well established notion that credit feeding shmups isn't fun, but playing for score is.

I can see that my single line response was of some offense and I apologise. I was unfairly playing it a for laughs, but not laced with poison as you may have felt.
I wish you the best of luck with Guwange, and with that eventual 1CC.

See you round.

No, I just thought I'd offended the guy by cracking jokes and felt bad about it, so I wanted to give an explanation instead of an unhelpful comment.

It's seriously easy to forget how something you write doesn't always come across how it sounds in your head. Not everybody gets the sentiment or humour because you're the only one who's in on it.

Hope you noticed I was just playing with you. Yap, that's so true... What was meant in a cordial and joking way can be understood as pickering and being elitist... There's just so much information missing in the comunication by text only. No smiley in the world is a substitute for our facial expressions, tone of voice etc., all those non-verbal forms of communication... Which often leads to conflicts. "Ducks back" is a good way to approach this. :-D

Back to topic: Hmm... I'd like to give Guwange another spin, but unfortunately, I just don't have the time for it. I got so much other games to play, it's almost a shame. Mushi Futari comes to mind, or Crimzon Clover... (or EspRaDe, Or EspGaluda, or EspGaluda II, or DDP DOJ, or Ketsui, or garegga, or Giga Wing... aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh)

Incredible how much hours of fun can be put in "only" 5 - 6 stages...

ah, that makes sense :)

also agree with that second bit, watching a superplay at the start of the snowy rooftop level they have only a few bullets to dodge, because i imagine through much practice they know exactly where to be and what to do to cancel most of the bullets, at the same point in the game i have a screen full of bullets because i don't know what i'm doing!

I think it's a pretty fair opinion. It's fairly easy to progress well on guwange (if you play attentively) once you figure out how to get that stage-4 power-up and not mess up completely after that. But the second half of stage-6 itself is harder than whole first part of the game before the full life power-up.

Not to mention that the game has pretty bad hit-box, which affects one's consistency. Obviously practice this mitigates this ultimately in the longer term, especially because this game doesn't seem to have too much in terms of closely spaced bullet weaving.

I never bothered for chaining in either game though. I am bad at scoring in general anyway.
