Your loss. They happen to be quite awesome.

@PainAmplifier: I pretty much agree with everything you said. However, I'd rather see a band move into a direction I don't like than not moving at all.

A prime example would be Kreator, who evolved very gradually from their thrashy roots to something very different. I, for one, really liked how they kept exploring new grounds. Then, with Endorama, they obviously took one step too far, to where their older fan base wouldn't follow them anymore, quite similar to what Morgoth did with Feel sorry for the Fanatic. So, after record sales hit rock bottom, they decided to play it safe and just kept regurgitating their pre-Coma of Souls sound over and over. I can understand why they're doing this, but it completely killed my interest in the band.
Somewhat true, as change simply for the sake of change is just as bad as stagnation. Also, when change is made simply to 'appeal' to more people or when it's dictated/directed by others is even worse. How often have we heard that, "It's what the Producer/Distributor/Record label wanted" or "We wanted to get more publicity/airplay/mainstream listeners"?

And let's not forget that sometimes the sound *doesn't* need to change. As long as the songs are good it's nice to have the sound not change radically every album or two. Bands like AC/DC or Motorhead just wouldn't be the same if they kept changing their sound. That's not to say things need to sound identical, after all 'Back in Black' doesn't sound quite like 'The Razor's Edge'.

But let's get back to the music...

Naglfar - "Enslave the Astral Fortress" 'Melodic' Black Metal. This is off their first album 'Vittra' and it's a solid album all the way through. Later albums seemed to have shifted a bit more towards the 'blackened death' sound after some shifts in members, but they're still putting out some top quality music.

Narnia - "Heavenly Love" Hard Rock. A bit uncommon, as they are billed as a 'Christian' band. I think their first album 'Awakening' that this came from, is the best. Later albums didn't seem to quite reach the same level, although still quite good overall.

Necromantia - "Spiritdance" Black Metal.(Greece) I think the first two albums from this band where the best. 'Spiritdance' is the closer to the second album and I think the mood of the song is very apropos for that. Not black metal in the blast beat or scream sense, but rather in direction and exploration. Later albums felt a bit too conventional, as if the quality of the songs was inversely related to the quality of the sound. (Not that this isn't an issue thats shown in myriad other bands...)

Nergal - "The Wizard of Nerath" Black Metal. Greek and much like Necromantia in their sound isn't like the northern bands from Sweden/Norway etc. I almost didn't post this one, as I'm still not sure exactly *why* I like this album. The vocals are very much pure 'screaming' at times, and the music is good , a bit experimental/explorational and the sound is very raw/low quality. But for some reason I can just put this one in and just *listen* to it. I think I first heard them on a magazine sampler disc (SOD I think) and got the album when I just happened to run across it. Their later work sounds a lot more conventinal and it doesn't draw me in like this album does.

Night Conquers Day - "The First Snowfall"(Live) Black Metal. It's interesting to know that this band comes from New York and not Europe. NCD plays a more atmospheric style of black metal but one that works quite well for them. They don't appear to be active any more, as their last album appears to have been from 1999. I have both their studio releases, and both are great albums.

Nightingale - "Nightfall Overture" Progressive Metal. One of Dan Swano's works, later becoming a full band. Dan Swano's clear vocals are the main attraction here although the music is good as well.

Nocturnal Rites - "Pentagram" Power Metal. From "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" which is a great album. The lineup for this band wasn't terribly stable at first, which is highlighted by a vocalist change after the third album. The new vocals and songwriting are good, but not great to my ears so I stopped following them after that.

Omen - "Escape to Nowhere" Heavy Metal. This is the title track to an album filled with auditaury gold. This album really should have gotten heavy radio airplay, but is largely unknown these days. Their cover of "Radar Love" on this album is top notch as well. Their other albums are no less good, but are a bit less mainstream friendly. (kinda like Early Metallica versus later Metallica)

Piledriver - "The Metal Inquisition" Heavy Metal. This track should be the anthem for Metal heads everywhere! This band has a bit of a 'history' to it, but regardless all three albums are worth tracking down and checking out. The last one came out in 2008 and it still has that classic Piledriver 'quality' to it, including a driving title track.

Pitch Shifter - "Bastardiser" Industrial Metal. 'Submit' is a classic album from a band that went down that path that leads towards the 'mainstream'. I therefore don't recommend their later albums, although there is some quality still in them, but their early work is well worth listening to.

Plasmatics - "Mistress of Taboo" Punk/Rock/Metal. The Plasmatics never quite hit the really big times, although they have quite a cult status and were a big influence in their time. The band pretty much went defunct when Wendy O Williams committed suicide in 1998. If you can find them, their albums are all good. Although I think the later albums with their higher 'metal' content are better than the early ones that were a bit more punk.

...that's it for now. Still have some more to come though.

Keeping the ball rolling here with some more of the best metal.

Power Symphony - "Battles in the Twilight" Power Metal. The song here is excellent, but sadly the youtube upload quality in regards to the music is really crappy. I could not find a better quality version of this song though. Oddly enough the vocals came across pretty well. I suspect some dodgy recording setup. They released two great albums and an EP, before it label issues appear to have torpedoed the band for now. :(

Prong - "Beg to Differ" Thrash/Crossover/Industrial. 1990's 'Beg to Differ' and 1991's 'Prove you Wrong' are my top picks for this band, although 1994's 'Cleansing' with it's shift away from the thrash influences is another good album from this band. 'Who's Fist is this Anway?' or 'Snap your Fingers, Snap your Neck' are great instantly recognizable songs from that album, but I think the remainder of the album is a bit more on the forgetable side of things, thus my preference for the earlier works.

Pyogenesis - "Lost In Revery" Doomdeath/Gothic Metal. Or at least that is what their first three releases were. (Two Ep's and one full album.) 'Ignis Creatio' is some excellent doomdeath, while 'Waves of Erotasia' shows a logical and graceful evolution to the more Gothic Metal of 'Sweet X-Rated Nothings'. Alas, they didn't stop there or even slow down one bit, and by the time of 'Twinaleblood' they had transformed into an alternative/pop rock band. And other than a few lingering guitar crunches almost all the 'metal' of the previous albums was gone.

Raven - "On and On" NWOBHM Self-labeled as 'Athletic Rock', Raven is a great band for some frantic but not overly serious rock/metal. As of 2009 they were still putting out some hard rockin' music in the same very energetic style.

Resurrection - "Disembodied" Death Metal. Released in 1993, is a fairly unique but very good death metal album with a unique sound. Made more so by the odd/interesting spoken intro's to many of the songs. The band apparently broke up, but finally reformed with two of the original members to release a new album in 2008.

Ritual Carnage - "Burning Red, Burn till Death" Thrash Metal. While their first album was perhaps a bit on the generic side, by their second album "Every Nerve Alive", from which this track is taken, they had managed to build a top notch album filled with great songs from beginning to end. A unique band in that the singer is an American and the rest of the band is Japanese. (The band is based in japan) The following albums shifted the vocals away from the heavier growling into something kinda odd to my ears, (Reminds me of earlier 80-ish metal for some reason) but may appeal more to Japanese tastes, although the music remains fast and heavy.

Rockbitch - "Innocence" Rock/Metal. A very controversial band, what with it being mostly/all females with copious amount of nudity and sexual outrageousness on stage and in the lyrics. But under the stage show was some very good rock n roll. This track comes from the 'Motor Driven Bimbo' album, which is a solid effort from start to finish.

Rosetta Stone - "The Witch" Gothic Rock/Metal. Although I hesitate to include this here, as it is almost all rock with very little metal per se. Yet, the crossover from rock to and from metal has always been a bit of a thin barrier, thus I've gone and added it to this listing since it does have a fair amount in common with more metal goth bands such as Type O Negative.

Running Wild - "Chains and Leather" Power/Heavy Metal. Although currently disbanded, Rol Kasperak pretty much single handedly took Running Wild and 'Pirate Metal' starting in 1984 with "Gate of Purgatory' all the way to 2005 with "Rogues en Vogue'. There is a lot of great metal in the bands Discography, but 'Chains and Leather' is an anthem that all metalheads should be make themselves familiar with.

Sacred Reich - "The American Way" Thrash. Sacred Reich had a lot of promise and some very iconic songs including "Surf Nicaragua". They never were terribly prolific, and seemed to just sink into obscurity over the years until they went inactive/disbanded. Still "The American Way" is a classic album that should be an essential part of every metalheads collection.

Sacrifice - "The Ones I Condemn" Thrash metal. Vocals are a bit more on the hardcore/crossover side of things, but the music is pure thrash. The band released several albums from 86 to 93, then went dormant until 2009 where they picked back up with hardly a hitch in their sound. A great band that's well worth checking out.

Savatage - "Strange Wings" Metal/Progressive. While Savatage has a long and pedigreed discography, it's an older band and thus I feel that it has slipped out of peoples minds a bit over the years. Also, their later works in the progressive field of metal tends to overshadow the harder/heavier metal that their earlier works were, liek this track from "Hall of the Mountain King". (A classic album in itself.)

...still more rocking and headbanging to come!

Anyone here listen to any Orphaned Land? Excellent metal band from Israel.

I'm not a huge fan of death metal in general, but I really do like Opeth. They came through the southeastern US three times recently and I managed to see them each time.

I also got to see Cynic recently.

I've never heard of them before. I hit youtube and did a quick search. Found a video for 'Ocean Land' and gave it a listen. It's a little on the lighter side of things, and reminds me a bit of Elegy era Amorphis with the mixed vocals and mostly clear guitars. At first listen it's alright, but it doesn't really hit the top ten percent for me. At least not from that song anyway.

As for getting back to music that is in my top ten percent...

Saxon - "Princes of the Night" NWOBHM. Saxon has been releasing albums since 1979 and hasn't stopped quite yet. Like Dio, Ozzy and Motorhead the music hasn't strayed to far from their signature style, although each album has it's own sound. There have been ups and downs like all other bands, but the quality overall has remained high thus why its on my list like this.

Seance - "Salt Rubbed Eyes" Death Metal. Seance put out two good albums before going dormant for many long years, but reformed to put out a new album in 2009. This is the title track from their second album, which I consider a top ten classic from start to finish.

Sempiternal Deathreign - "Devastating Empire Towards Humanity" Doomdeath. Much like Demilich, this band released one album and then folded. The sound on this is quite raw but the music is good to incredible. The vocals are a bit on the rough and murky side, but doesn't detract from the music. An gem in metal, uncut and rough but still worthy.

Seventh Angel - "No Longer a Child" Thrash/Doom. Seventh Angel is an interesting mix of thrash and some doom stylings. Like Seance, they had a very long period of inactivity, before coming back out with a new album. The quality of the new album seems to match with the older with an updated sound. This track is from their second album and provides a good example of their style.

Seventh Omen - "Goodbye" Heavy Metal. Seventh Omen released 3 albums before the various members split up. I have the first two, and the first album is a top ten classic. I wasn't very happy with the sound or songs on the second and have yet to get the third. The video I found is a bit rough in quality and at times it's unintentionally amusing with some of the now vintage cheesey shots, but the song is my favorite off this album, which is just chock full of great memorable tracks. The opener 'MJ-12' is a great opening song that sets up the tone of the entire album. 'The Fall of Mu' and the slightly industrial 'Scraping Ground' are some of the better tracks before 'Goodbye' ends the album in an appropos way.

Shark Island - "Paris Calling" Heavy (Hair) Metal. Shark Island pretty much imploded due to lack of album sales, which kind of shocks me as it's their video on MTV that introduced me to this band, and the album it came from is a good one. Call it bad timing or whatever, as there were a lot of other very good bands and albums from that era, so they might have just gotten lost in the crowd really. Still if you are looking for some good hair metal, their "Law of the Order" album is just what the doctor ordered.

Sinergy - "Beware the Heavens" Heavy/Power Metal. The combo of Kimerbly Goss's vocals and Alexi Laiho's Guitars pretty much sets the tone for this band. They only released three albums and are probably now defunct, although I haven't found a definate answer on that yet. This track is my favorite, but each album has it's own highlights worth checking out, although I do agree with most reviewers that the middle album has a few too many weak tracks.

Skyclad - "Polkageist" Folk Metal. Skyclad is...Skyclad. One of the first/founding members of the 'Folk Metal' genre and it shows with this rather eclectic band. (More metal early on and more folk later.) Although the band did stumble when founding member Martin Walkyier left, they are still kicking around. 'Prince of the Poverty Line' is the critics favorite from this band, but 'Folkemon' is mine, from which this track comes.

Stonege - "Voyage of Endless Time" Death/Progressive/Traditional Metal. Sadly I have no audio track of this band/album. All I can point you to is the Encyclopedia Metallium page. But if you happen to wander across the sole release from this band, I highly recommend it. It's a solid album that comes out of nowhere and disappears back into it if you blink.

Tellurium - "LV426" Techno/Industrial Death. Again, I have no audio track for this album, but if you ever see it...'PICK IT UP!'. (Someday I may need to make a youtube account just to upload this album.) This is a criminally unheard of album. A truly unique mix of Death, Industrial and a just a touch of techno make this a album for the ages...if only other people knew of it. I especicially like how they sampled some of the audio from the original 'Diablo' game from Blizzard and used it in a few tracks. I found another album by a band of this name on yahoo music, but I'm not certain if it is the same band or not. The music composition makes me think it might be, but the album is a much more ambient/techno sound and seems to have none of the death/industrial that makes LV426 such a kickass album.

Tenebrae - "Everlasting Freeze" Death/Doom. Ah, something I can find again. I can't vouch for the second album these guys put out, but the first is a great death metal album with a nice doom vibe to it.

The 3rd and the Mortal - "Why So Lonely" Atmospheric Doom. And by that I mean the light side of doom, thanks to the etherial vocals of Kari Rueslatten. Sadly Kari left after only two albums and the music took a turn completely away from anything metal. Therefore I really only recommend the first two releases from this band, the EP 'Sorrow' and the full album 'Tears Laid in Earth'. The shift isn't that immediate, so some of the later period albums still have plenty of worthwhile (incredible even) music, just don't be surprised if there is little or no metal content in them.

The Chasm - "The Scars of My Journey" Death Metal. A long running band out of Mexico, it's almost a crime that they didn't get the recognition and exposure that a few other bands such as Sepultura did. They've released at least 8 albums of prime death metal over the years.

The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets - "Shhh..." Rock/Metal. TDOTHT is pretty much a rock band, but it's their focus on songs about HP Lovecraft's Cthulu Mythos that really gives them an automatic membership in the geek metal camp. I could only find this track as a Rockband playthrough, but it's a perfect introduction to the Thickets. They do have a few tracks wander a bit into the 'metal' territory, thus I don't feel like it's too much of a stretch to list them here.

The Everdawn - "Burn" Melodic Death. If you like At the Gates, you should track down a copy of this one and only band's album. Musically and stylistically they are very close to mid-period 'Gates and it's not a bad thing. Not a copy of ATG, but defiantely an album that was inspired by them.

Theatre of Tragedy - "And When He Falleth" Doomdeath. One of the early bands in the field of doom/goth/death that mixed clear female vocals and raspy death vocals...but didn't stay in that genre at all. Sadly the band moved fairly predicatably (and quickly) away from anything death/doom like and started heading into techno territory. Their second album (the one this track came from) is the best of the still heavy albums to my ears and is the one I recommend. Their third full album "Aegis" is the last one to have any real strong ties to metal, afterwards the techno influences seem to have taken hold and form the majority of their sound. (Although the later albums are fairly good if you do like techno styled music.)

...going to stop here for now, but I have some more top picks to offer up later on.

You list quite a bit of death metal. Do you / have you listened to any Nile? They're from right up the road from me.

Yes, I know about Nile, I have most of their albums. 'To Dream of Ur' is probably my favorite track from them of all time. The 'Saurian Meditation' solo albums from Karl Sanders are great as well.

I'm not listing them here simply because I expect that most people who have any interest in Death Metal already know about them. For the same reasons you won't find Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, etc. in this list either. Some of my selections may seem a bit eclectic as a result if you think that a band is more known than I do, but if nothing else that's just a good excuse for someone else to post those as well.

For this listing, I have a few critieria. One, the music should be metal of some sort with only a few minor exceptions I thought of interest. Second, it should be something that isn't completely 'obvious' and is either unknown or uncommon. And last it needed to be in the 'Top Ten'. Since everyone else was already listing the really well known stuff and I wanted to cover the lesser known things, I took this to be the top ten *percent* of good/great music not just a single 10 bands/albums.

And since you got me here already, I might as well continue on with the listings...

To/Die/For - "In Solitude" Gothic Metal. The crooning vocals here make things fairly unique, although you could easily get burned out on them pretty fast if the music wasn't as good as it is here. As usual however, after 2003 there was some vocalist oddities and name/personell issues that eventually ended up with the band folding completely.

Trouble - "Pray for the Dead" Heavy Metal/Doom. You've probably heard these guys before but not recognized them...if not, well you're missing out. Trouble comes from the early Black Sabbarth era of Doomy Heavy Metal and is *good* at it. The original vocalist isn't with them anymore, but the replacment isn't a bad choice in his own right.

Unanimated - "Life Demise" Melodic Death Metal. Incredible. That's the only word I can use to describe these guys. They released two albums and then disappeared for 10 years before coming back and releasing another great album. Making these guys 3 for 3 on releasing great albums in my book. They've even managed to make each album unique without radically changing their sound.

Unleashed - "Where No Life Dwells" Death Metal. Unleashed is still releasing great music, but whenever I hear the name, I always think back to this track and the intro to it. Their first few albums seem to stick to a very similar sound that makes you forget which album you are actually listening to, but by the time 1995's 'Victory' album, they were branching out with changes to the vocals as well as the sound without abandoning what made them great in the first place.

Vengence Rising - "Before the Time" Thrash Metal (Christian). The video quality here is a bit lacking, so the somewhat weak sound makes the vocals even more difficult to follow than what they are on the album. The vocals on the albums before/after this one have clearer production, but the frantic tempo of the music of the "Destruction Comes" album has always been on of my all time favorites. It's especially fun to listen to the track Hyde Under Pressure where they poke fun of this in a tongue and cheek way as well.

Visionary - "God Sleeps" Progressive Metal. Ah, here's another Band/album you've probably never heard about that truly is a hidden gem. This album is great from beginning to end and really deserves far more exposure than it ever got.

Wargasm - "Enemy Mine" Thrash Metal. Wargasm never quite reached superstardom, but not because they lacked the musical ability. They eventually folded, but not before we got some great music out of them, including this track off their "Ugly" album.

Warlock - "Without You" Heavy Metal. Before Doro Pesch spun herself off into a successful solo career, she was the vocalist for this band. By the third album you could see that coming though, with the member changes and a greater focus on Doro the person. But this is where it all started.

Witchery - "A Paler Shade of Death" Thrash Metal. Witchery put out 6 albums/eps with vocalist Toxine, before replacing him with Legion (Of Marduk fame) giving their last release more of a 'blackened thrash' feel than you hear on this track. The music is still pretty much straight up thrash though.

...and that brings my big list O' Metal to an end for now. There's more out there, but these are in the top ten percent of the albums that I actually physically have on tap. I hope you enjoyed the selection. (And let me know if I goofed on one of the links!)

Dark Angel - Darkness Descends
Possessed - Seven Churches
Savatage - Power Of The Night
Believer - Extraction From Mortality
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine
Testament - First Strike Still Deadly (yeah, it's a compilation basically... but as other Testament albums have 50/50 ingenious and mediocre songs, I'd better count it, since it has no bullshit)
Megadeth - United Abominations
Razor - Evil Invaders
Forbidden - Forbidden Evil

THRASH TILL DEATH!!!

Then why not pick Testament Live in London? That one's as close as you can possibly get to a decent best-of compilation.

Ya, I do have a DVD of that show. It's awesome! But it still has some mellow parts like 'The Legacy'

In anticipation of Nevermore's european tour I listened through their back catalogue and I think their album Dead Heart In A Dead World deserves to be in a top ten list. Don't know if someone has mentioned this album yet. I love their mid tempo songs where acoustic guitars are mixed with heavy riffs. All fast songs are awesome too.

This stuff is too hard. I've just looked over my list, decided half of the choices were barmy and changed 'em. I think my top ten will only ever be comprised of the stuff I can't stop listening to at the present moment. Right now, that would just be Old's Nocturnal Ritual EP ten times, really, but that's no fun.
