I recently bought a Super Famicom and one game for it, Sutte Hakkun. One of my reasons for getting the SFC was to see what a console would look like over RGB. I got a (presumably) SCART cable for it, and I had long ago built a SCART to d-sub adapter for my Sony PVM.
So here is the problem. When I plugged my SFC into the PVM with a SCART cable, an image appeared but the colors were wrong. I opened up the end of the cable (it snaps back together) to see if I could find any clues as to why this was happening. I looked up the pinout for SCART to see if there was any relation between the colors of the cables connected to the pins and the signals of the pins themselves. Oddly, it appeared that the cables were connected to the pins for the RGB inputs. I should think that they would be connected to the outputs, or maybe I'm missing something.
I also noticed that there were some resistors and capacitors connected to some of the pins. I'm not sure why those are needed. I also looked at the pinout for Japanese RGB, and there were no pins connected to the ones necessary for Japanese RGB.
I should also mention that I've used the PVM with arcade boards in the past. I use one of those cheapo Vogatek superguns. I tested one today and it still worked fine, and the image looked correct.
So what is going on here? Why are the colors all wrong?

I recall from discussion in this forum that Japanese SCART is NOT the same pinout as Euro SCART, so you'll have to do some rewiring to make it right.
Also, there was a late revision of the SNES that removed the ability to output RGB, among other things. I don't know if this revision ever hit Japan though.

Re: Super Famicom on Sony PVM over RGB
As I said in my original post, I'm fairly certain it isn't Japanese RGB.

It's a regular Super Famicom. The model number is SHVC-001.

Hi Mate,
Can you post an image so we can actually see what the problem is.
Can you also provide a pinout of exactly what SCART pins are connected on your wiring.
I have done a fair bit of work with my low-res consoles recently, converting RGB Scart to DSUB for my Arcade Monitors.
One of the most common issues has been the scart cables have not been providing a ground for composite. This fubar's the image but is easily rectified.
Regards,
Shaun

Re: Super Famicom on Sony PVM over RGB
So let me see if I understand you correctly; if I use a European SCART cable with an NTSC Super Famicom it won't work because it requires different electrical components attached to the pins? If that's the case, what's the solution? I should elaborate - the cable I'm using to connect to the PVM accepts Euro SCART. In other words, I need some way to connect a Super Famicom to a Euro SCART connector.Arasoi wrote:If you're positive you are using a PAL SCART cable on your NTSC Super Famicom this could possibly be the source of your problems, as European RGB cables have 75 ohm resistors inline, Japanese/NTSC 220uf caps inline.
If I understand you correctly my options are either to replace the resistors with capacitors; or buy a Japanese RGB cable for the system and build a new cable that will allow me to connect Japanese RGB to my PVM (or I could buy one, I suppose). Am I correct? Is there a cable out there that would do what I want it to do without further modification - a cable that will take Super Famicom signal and attach to a Euro SCART connector?
I can take some pictures if necessary, but it won't be for a couple weeks.

Thanks for the info! I might give that Gamecube RGB cable a try. It's true that I can solder, but I'm not very good at it.
