Dive Bomber Kirika (wip)

Hello.
Dive Bomber Kirika is a shooter project I started not too long ago, actually almost quit with it, but I'm now back at it. I'm more of a music guy, so drawing sprites and coding takes really long time.. The game is at a very early stage at the moment. I've been trying to get the engine working, which means that I've barely started with the first stage, only one enemy so far, etc. No focus on the enemy patterns, I've just placed them here and there to create something to shoot at for this version.

Oh, and this game doesn't take itself too seriously. Haha. I tried that in the beginning, but then the weirdness came in. Can't help it. :D No real story in the game for the moment, simply Kirika the android dive bomber & her trusty companion, Schallius the co-pilot saving the day.

Instructions:
Arrow keys - Move
X - Shoot
Z - Dive
1 - Insert coin
F4 - Full screen on/off
F3 - Test mode (press before the title screen appears to access test mode, press again to exit test mode)
F2 - Reset game

"Mitä ihmettä?!"

So yeah, I actually gave this one a try and although very wip, it shows some promise as well. I really like the music, did you make it?
Definetely looking forward how this one turns out.

I can only agree with what Ebo already said. Also, one more thing: How did you get the sound test drummer sync with the music, was it just good timing or did you do some magic music syncing script in Game Maker?
If watching the trailer of the game
makes you feel a certain way
I would be very happy if
you would give the game a try

Thanks! :)
Yes, music is by me. Haha, no magic involved, I set the drummer's animation speed as close as possible to match the track tempo.
Next up, I need to do more enemies for the first stage.

New version up.

- Updated title screen
- New tracks
- More graphics & enemies
- Added a game over-screen :D
- Revised shooting & respawning

To be honest, the first stage is about complete till the first shoreline. After that it's just for fun and work in progress until I manage to do more graphics.
Now I'm trying to do a hiscoretable & some cutscenes in rotation with the title screen. And of course concentrate on the first stage.
Just wish I'd have more time do this..

Haha! The game over screen is awesome! Honestly, a nice job so far for someone who is primarily a music guy.

Awesome game over screen.

Most of the larger enemies in level 1 take way too much damage before they die, though.

I'm really liking this so far. Wish I understood Japanese though. :P

Overall I like the style, it can make the game quite unique if progress gets made with this! Is it made in Game Maker?

Also, I ran this on my legacy machine and found it ran fullspeed....till enemies appeared, when music cuts out and keyboard gets a mind of its own. I'm putting it down to it being set to High Priority, where in Game Maker games this problem is quite an issue on. If possible set it back to normal and add a FPS display for next release?

Big thanks for the comments!
I've now fixed the health of the bigger enemies. Remade the shadows, for the better imo. Added 1 new explosion sprite & sound. The water enemies now leave remains after they've been destroyed. And some other little changes here and there coming up in the next version.

BPzeBanshee, yes this is made in GM, and you're right about the priority being set to highest.. I'm going to set it back to normal for the next version, and hopefully the game runs ok then. If by japanese you mean the speech, it's actually in finnish. But don't worry it pretty much makes no sense, and the android's actually really doesn't as I cutted some samples together to have it say that nonsense. Hahah.

Lol, sounded like Japanese to me. :P
Out of curiosity, will you implement some sort of text dialog with the characters or will the ramble vocal mystery remain exactly that?

Also, really dig the music, and design. Feels like a parody of 1943 with cool features. :D

New version up.

- Back to normal running priority
- Remade the shadows
- New explosion sprites & sounds
- Water enemy remains
- Fixed enemy health issues, other bugs
- Added a restart, press "1+Z+X" simultaneously
- Reworked title screen, some sprites
- Added cutscenes presenting the characters, don't insert coin at the title and they appear

BPzeBanshee, sorry no text dialogs. But I can try to translate them for you. At the first screen Schallius says: "What on earth!?" at the flashing logo. At the take-off sequence he says: "Well if I place that though and.. oh devil!". When you die (except the last time when it's a death scream) he says "Ok.." And Kirika's speech unit is broken, so it's random voices. :D

Still trying to get everything working like I want, for this update I mostly worked on the character cutscenes.. The power-ups are scattered all over the stage now, but I'm planning the flying car to come and give them to the player. I was wondering one thing too.. does the odd resolution (352x452) make any problems with the graphics when on full screen? Because I'm not sure if it's my computer, game maker or the resolution, but the game doesn't look like it should at full screen on my computer. Hard to explain, for example at the title screen in the "(c) Hotonance 2011" the double 1's are not identical to each other. They sould be. I should have picked a more normal resolution.. :(

Very nice improvement indeed! I kinda figured the bloke with the eyes popping up was doing something along those lines, so overall I think it's going very nicely.

There's a few minor issues I've noticed though, really nothing important for now but I thought I'd mention them to put it on your radar:
- Reset button doesnt seem to work. Ive tried what you mentioned and it wont work for me. I recommend simply using F2 since most Game Maker games use this.
- explosions dont seem center to the objects they came from, ie a flying ship exploding will make its explosion slightly under where it was.
- speaking of explosions, the enemy ships that move across the borders of the screen explode going in the direction they follow. Really they should be going down.
- Not totally sure what was wrong with the previous incarnation of shadows, but those ones on the road above the ocean really trip out at the beginning now, kinda distracting. The other shadows are okay, so I dunno.
- When having just died and still invincible, you cant pick up upgrades.

As for your screen resolution stuff, yeah the resolution's odd but I dont notice anything with the two 1s. Game Maker games in general have unusual ways of doing fullscreen and this could be just your computer. I know on some machines the display looks strange with the pixels in fullscreen for example.

Time for a quick update.

Super thanks again! Makes me feel blind not noticing some of those things..
Let's see, reset button is now F2, I forgot that there's problems pressing many simultaneous buttons in some keyboards. As in mine it worked. Explosion for the flying enemy now corrected (but it's a placeholder, because I'll draw another explosion for the flying enemies). Explosions now don't go in the directions the enemy was going.

For the shadows, I changed them to what they are now because I'm trying to make this like the older shooters. Pretty much everything I've played has them like that. I had to remove the road shadow.. There wasn't any shadow in the previous version because it looked so bad then, and yeah, it just didn't work this time either.

I actually didn't first code the invincibility power-ups because I wasn't sure how to do it. :D But I tried, and they should be working now!

So far so good. This might seem a bit obvious but the game is really starting to remind me of Toaplan's shooters (in a good way), even the music sounds somewhat Batsugun-ish to me.

Like always, keep up the good work.

ALL UR BASE R BELONG TO US

 Yeah, I can see that too.

For invincibility handling among other things you can always check out GMOSSE. I'm on my way to releasing MK-III soon and it has a lot of features that may be otherwise difficult to implement, such as scrolling text and pause menus.
