And why is Raiden not considered an 8/16 Bit vert, even though it's from that time and runs on 16 Bit hardware?

At first I didnt relise the poll can be edited anyway I found out I could last post and edited it then. but now ive made another (final) edit that imo improves on things.


Ive made some alterations to the poll please re vote (ive explained things in my 1st post). This thread was originally made on a half baked / arsed whim, so this edited poll should be much better.

I still don't see why Compile AND Musha have to be up there. Its their most well-known shmup. Might as well throw Irem and konami up there next to Gradius and R-Type

fair point, I forgot musha was a compile shmup EDIT also I was just about to change it for Blazing Lazers until I relised that too was compile DOH. Also to preempt folk picking any more holes in my poll (whyich im quite sure you all like doing )

Yea the old poll was a bit shoddy. As for manic imo theres enough difference between many early 8 / 16bit shmups then the golden era of shmups in the 90s just before the genre became unpopular and bullet hell / danmaku took over. Also as imo there are shmuppers out there that while dont like their shmups to be filled with bullet mazes but also arnt too keen on 80s era shmup mechanics that put many bullet hell gamers off (ie check points, speed ups, over powered or under powered graduis power up system) Its for those guys that the manic catagory is there for.

Anyway where's Bullet Magnet when you need him!

Ahh, leaving it up to us to decide where some of them go, I like it. Yes, picking holes is fun, but I do like the idea you went for. Was more of a friendly hole picking (wow... that sounds awful)

I'll vote for MM in the manic, just because of the feel I get when playing it. Nothing like Touhou or Cave, but much more similar to Raiden Fighters.

Now I wonder where V-V would go, if Batsugun is in the bullet hell section. Oh hell, it doesn't matter

Pretty much any Shmup or game that induces twitching, heart palpitations, and places the player at a heightened risk of stroke or seizure.

In general, prefer vertical to horizontal. Ideally there would be a perfect balance between speed, strategy, scoring, surviving, randomness and set pattern. Pace of play the difficulty curve should both be agreeable. Clarity in graphics.

Not sure about genres.

I love Compile SHMUPS, and the joy that comes with acquiring power-ups to attain maximum firepower, covering the screen in such ridiculous amounts I can barely see...ahh, yeah.

Don't forget to call all older Mario Bros games Shmups from now on. You shoot stuff, they have gravity and they even have a scoring system!

Well I voted this time, as I had just ignored the topic before.

8/16bit era verts and classic horis for me. I can't get over how good some of the old classic verts are like Dragon Spirit and Flying Shark. I have a soft spot for horis if they are done right. I voted for the under dogs, bullet hell can suck it.

Best run and gun game is LSA Squad.

That game needs a hd remake on psn and live, fix a few scoreglitches and it is a very enjoyable game. I played this alot back in the acrdes, but its the only place i played it, i never sw that game agian. Which is a shame.
