The popularity of shmup in Japan seem to dramatically decrease. Fortunately, Japanese Classical school game company learned how to adapt themselve and get into the global market before being extincted.

They're about as inoffensive as shmup character designs get these days, lolicreeps. I am done hoping for the return of unicorn dandies and will settle for this.

It's good to see some serious-looking protagonists here, it's like Under Defeat.

Looks great in the promo and I love the character designs - they remind me of 80's anime in a good way :D

Art style almost immediately reminds me of Creators Labo.

Is the female pilot wearing an Xbox logo eyepatch?

I can see that but I don't want to agree because I actually liked UD's character designs.

Fixed for you.

Finally some character designs with a little old-school grit about them rather than all the prancing doe-eyed pixies of late. I like.

This.

I would actually say it reminds me most of Sengeki Striker, since both games try to look badass and fail miserably.

What the hell. Can't they just...I don't know...have robots instead? Okay, so mechs riding in mechs would be kind of weird (And kinky, perhaps...). But it works better than this.

Explain this, at least for Strania.

Tell me how an eyepatch and a cane is supposed to make the guy look good. I don't even want to know what Warashi was thinking when they came up with that.

As for Strania...I keep getting the feeling they were intentionally trying to make them look semi-ugly (Much like Metal Slug does, but Metal Slug blows any of it away), or are just failing at making them look good. Either way, it's a failure.

Maybe if I see different poses or art styles I could rethink things (Ikaruga for example had horrid character art IMO, but fortunately fans got better)

Also, effort drawing ≠ better drawing. God, if I could name all the examples...

Is character art in a shmup really that important anyway? Just give me a dot dodging a load of dots fired by other dots, that'll do me.

I'm starting to get that weird feeling again, where I first hate something and then after seeing it a bajillion times I start liking it, to the point of saying it's geniunely good.

Had that with MS7's soundtrack...

Well that's what I mean. For all I care they should just have miniature mechas piloting the mechas or something. And never mind whatever's inside them.

I think it can be important in setting the tone of the game though - personally I think these are quite good designs; much rather the under defeat kind of look, than the Mamoru-kun or even senko type looks. Less lolis and kids the better...

However, looking at the game itself, looks a bit too kid neony imho - nothing broken in that, just my preferential interest at work.

Some interesting news about the game over at Mecha Damashii. Apparently it will be released as a digital download for arcades as well.

I'm fairly certain that also means it's on American XBLA, if that's your problem.
