Re: Movies you've just watched
Just got done watching Machete this afternoon. A good B movie with A list actors, i'd recommend it to anyone who's not looking for a deep plot and just a good ol fashion action movie.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Blacula. It's streaming on netflix. Surprisingly not that bad a film. Great soundtrack and OK acting. Same vampire you've seen a million times, but at least Dracula's got some style this time 'round.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Finally watched Legend of the Guardians last night (or as CMoon referred to it months ago, GDOM), very good movie. The plot got a little rushed towards the end, it seemed, but it still turned out well.
Re: Movies you've just watched
GDOM might be Snyder's best film, but that doesn't mean it is a great movie. It is pretty much Secret of NIMH meets 300, which is pretty fucking crack-tastic! Too bad there's really no chance for a sequel.
Watched Polanski's MacBeth last night. Holy shit! Not that MacBeth is a happy story, but toss in Polanski's bleak early 70's vision, and you've got a really nightmarish film.

The Battle of Algiers - A decent movie with very good depictions of urban terrorism and counter insurgency operations. It's amazing how little has changed in 50 years, from organizational structure to tactics to the parsing of the difference between "torture" and "interrogation", it wouldn't be too hard to place the same events in a modern movie.

I started watched the Welles version at one point but didn't finish it. I recall it being messy, but I will need to go back now that I've seen so many other versions of MacBeth.RGC wrote:@CMoon: Presumably you've seen the Welles version? @Acid King> Pretty sure that movie is in my que. One day I shall get to it.

Re: Movies you've just watched
It's worth a watch and it seems to be highly regarded. It's well made and reading up on it explains some of the issues, such as dialogue having to be dubbed due to the use of nonprofessional actors.

They Live:
"I've come to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of bubble gum"
"Wear these glasses or eat that garbage can" (more or less)
"Life's a bitch, and she's back in heat."
Definitely not a great movie, but fitting for it's time and keeping to Carpenter's style The idea that the whole corporate model is run by galaxy swinging aliens, who might not even be oppossed to taking a few like-minded humans with them (coz it's just business) works just as well in the late 80's as it does now. Gigantic 'consume' 'obey' and 'reproduce' signs are giggle worthy, but aliens standing in for the bad guys of our current economic crisis feels spot on and loaded with a level of black humor that Carpenter manages to ride every now and then.
The 10 minute fist fight was actually only 5, but it's still entertaining. The final scenes live better in my memory than on screen, but I'm glad I saw it again. Ultimately this is a funny movie, that like Idiocracy, may work better for it's message than its entertainment value. Strangely recommended for those who already know they need to revisit it; but anyone looking for a good movie should avoid.
Edited for general drunkeness/typos.

THEY LIVE AND CONAN THE BARBARIAN.
Two of my favorite films, ever. The fight scene in They Live is so awesome! Was actually conversing about this tonight with some buddies.
Conan is life. BUM BUM BUM BUM BUM BUM BUMBUMBUMBUM DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DOOOOOOOOOOO DOOOOOOOOO (theme song) Basil Poledouris' soundtrack is the greatest thing.

It's cool how the guys fighting in They Live choreographed the whole thing without telling Carpenter about it first. I'm so glad he kept it in, it's the best part of the movie.

That was on TV the other night, I had the same problem when I was trying to sleep. Conan rules though.Mortificator wrote:Conan the Barbarian. Now I have to slap myself to stop humming the main theme.
Cmoon has made me want to watch Krull now too, haven't seen that in a loooong time.
I watched Empire of the Sun (I've seen it before but the missus hadn't). Speilberg man, when he's in his element he's cool, but why on earth did it take him until Schindler to realise that you could make a historical movie without so much whimsical sentimentality that you completely lose out on any actual depth.
It's enjoyable to watch and lovely to look at, but it may as well be a childrens book adaptation (which it's not.)
I also watched Cherry Tree Lane. Well made and entirely horrifying from beginning to end - but not recommended. It's the dark side of Britain and stuff I'd rather not watch, I only need to step out the door to see what kind of lowlife this country has produced, I don't need that shit in my living room.

Well Conan is a great movie. I mean, you can point out problems with it, but it isn't a B film, it isn't some oddity. It's production levels are very high, and if it doesn't appeal to everyone, then to hell with you!
I've been wanting to rewatch Conan but have mostly been watching schlock. Yes, Krull was amuzing to me (and once its streaming on netflix I consider it free), but no one here should expect it to be good or rank it (or any of the other movies I'ven mentioned of late) as in league with Conan. Crom!

Got myself around to watching Machete a couple nights ago. Great movie if you just want to turn off your brain for a while and enjoy some good ol' gore and tits. It was pretty much everything I wanted it to be way back when the "fake" trailer played when I watched Grindhouse.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Krull is such a terrible movie, quite possibly one of the worst ever made.. I do think of the scene with the stoopid cyclops looking out into the valley every so often, so at least it's got that.
They Live is a rather decent flick though, I would agree that it is more relevant than ever. Plus it's got Rowdy Rodney Piper, at least I think that's what the name is supposed to be, any movie with him is awesome ( Hell Comes to Frog Town)

watched that new movie Cop Out with Bruce Willis and Tracey Morgan. Funnier than I expected it to be. A kid in the movie randomly mentions the infamous phrase "All your base are belong to us"

Eyes Wide Shut: captivating acting and dialogue, and scenes that set this movie apart from the rigamorale of others; I loved the mansion ceremony intro. Made married life seem interesting? A few things here and there didn't fit into the whole very well, but at the same time left you wondering. The hype for this movie when it came out gave me the impression it was just a porno with its NC-17 rating. So very untrue. Worth watching.

La Horde
French zombie flick from 2009. I enjoyed it; been in the queue for a few.
Nothing particularly new, but it was good none the less. Suprisingly good production/effects.

I now see where they got the idea for Virtua Fighter's Shun Di. The actual Drunken Master fighting style was the coolest, but I was so impressed by JC full stop, what an athlete. The guy was clearly in the prime of his fitness and all that Chinese Opera training was visible in the movie.dunpeal2064 wrote:I love the first movie.
