I'm making a control panel, and with the prototype I've found that it's awkward to get exact directions on the joystick when it's lined up square, and the player is facing the screen at an angle. For example, what seems like 'right' for player 2, sometimes registers as 'up-right,' at least until he gets used to it.
So does anyone have experience of making a control panel with the player's controls angled at, say, 15 degrees, so both the player and their controls are facing the centre of the screen? Or would it just be stupid to have a joystick mounted at 15 degrees?
Slanted player controls?
Re: Slanted player controls?
It would be. No real arcade controls are slanted (unless you count control panels with more than 3 players from the 80's).Mikey wrote:Or would it just be stupid to have a joystick mounted at 15 degrees?

Re: Slanted player controls?
Thanks. And how about the upward slant that Japanese cabs put on the player 2 buttons. Is there any real benefit from this?

Unless player 1 is a tiny guy, you can lean away slightly and be more comfortable. Player 1's controls are more important to get ergonomical, as they will get far more playtime.Mikey wrote:Thanks. Re: Slanted player controls?
OK. I've tried to make a layout that puts p1 and p2 the same distance from the centre of the screen, rather than making p2 sit out wide, so I'll probably just make both sets of controls identical.
Re: Slanted player controls?
If you're making your own thing, make it as ergonomic as possible. Either way, you'll get used to it (standard cab design ain't so ergonomic). I have a 1 player cab with the stick on theeft and the buttons on the right. It feels great.

It's hard to decide. It will look authentic if it's like a standard cab, but standard cabs do often have serious issues with comfort, as you say.dpful wrote:If you're making your own thing, make it as ergonomic as possible.
