Mega Drive/Genesis RGB cables
I've seen these on Ebay, and being in America, I didn't even know there was such a thing.
Are these for real, and will they work on a U.S. Genesis(I have RGB to Component adapters)
I thought you had to have a RGB modded MD to get RGB video?

Re: Mega Drive/Genesis RGB cables
Genesis 2 outputs RGB as standard. You just need a cable.
Standard Euro RGB cable for use with Euro/Australian TV's.
Or JP21 RGB cable for use with Micomsoft XRGB unit.
Pinouts are different on the cables so make sure you get the one you want. The RGB to component convertor you have will probably take a Euro cable.

How did I not know this? Man, i'm slow.
I've seen some cords for the Super Famicom, but I only have the U.S. SNES. Is there a specific cord for it?

Re: Mega Drive/Genesis RGB cables
Its the same for both consoles.
RGB from SNES/SFC only works from the older bigger models.

Re: Mega Drive/Genesis RGB cables
the only MD/Genesis that won't do RGB is the smallest 3'rd gen one.
The 1 and 2 do RGB very well.

Re: Mega Drive/Genesis RGB cables
There are no official RGB cables for the MD. There are unofficial RGB cables for MD1 (with optional stereo sound connector) and different RGB cables for all the later MD models. And there are no region differences for RGB output of any system to my knowledge (although GCN doesn't have it for NTSC regions).
Re: Mega Drive/Genesis RGB cables
There are regional differences for the RGB output on the snes between PAL and NTSC systems.

Re: Mega Drive/Genesis RGB cables
Apparently, you can use a Euro Scart cable with a JPN/USA region SFC/SNES console...it's just you won't get any sound but picture-wise, it's razor sharp with the RGB output indeed. Some further tinkering to mod a Scart cable to get both picture & sound is necessary if using it on such a JPN or USA region SFC or SNES setup.
Using a S-Video cable setup on a SFC/SNES ain't too shabby either if one has access to a S-Video monitor.

Re: Mega Drive/Genesis RGB cables
Just for fun, I thought I'd try a Euro GCN Scart cable setup on a USA region SNES console using viletim's 1st-gen RGB to Jamma adapter -- the picture portion works flawlessly, it's the sound effects & BGM tunes that I can't hear (even if the volume knob is cranked up to it's maximum setting). Now if I had access to a proper Japanese SFC 21-pin RGB cable setup, then both picture & sound effects/BGM tunes would be 100% working on a USA region SNES console.speedlolita wrote:Why would you not get sound? I've used the SCART GCN RGB cable on the SNES and it's wired almost the same as the JP21 cable... (an extra conductor wired to pin 3).
PC Engine Fan X! ^_~
The SNES connector uses the same audio pin config for all SNES systems (NTSC and PAL).... The only thing that differs between systems is pin 3 (CSYNC on NTSC and +12VDC on PAL) and what passive components to use for RGB. The official JP21 SFC cable uses composite video as sync, so PAL/NTSC differences are irrelevant as far as audio is concerned! Caps on RGB differ from NTSC and PAL, but audio is the same world wide. Sounds like you've got a funky combo going on!

Re: Mega Drive/Genesis RGB cables
PC Engine Fan X! has a defective cable. Also, you started out refering to a "Euro Scart cable with a JPN/USA region SFC/SNES console", and then tested with a "Euro GCN Scart cable". The Euro GCN cable is not the same as Euro SNES cable.
My sound works fine when I use a GC SCART cable with my US SNES. Nintendo has never put any components on the audio lines of ANY of its SCART cables:
http://members.optusnet.com.au/eviltim/ ... t.htm#snes
that's viletim's webpage by the way.

Re: Mega Drive/Genesis RGB cables
Back to the Genesis RGB...does anyone know where to get a decent quality cable...one where the audio doesn't suffer from that awful; 60hz hum (referring to model 2 ofc). The last 2 I bought on eBay are pretty mediocre. I'm thinking of making something that uses shielded minicoax for RGB lines maybe...

Re: Mega Drive/Genesis RGB cables
Get one that uses a 3.5mm jack for sound via the headphone jack on the front of the console. That's the best RGB cable IMO.

I got one and Mega Drive looks naaice.

Yeah, I got my EU to JP SCART adaptor from them too.
Adaptor_man for Saturn though.

Re: Mega Drive/Genesis RGB cables
I made up my own because all the ones on ebay were rubbish. It is pimpin.

Terminated in phono plugs because I'm using the MD1 + MCD1 combo. The SCART end contains pulldown resistors and caps as per the Sony schematic for the video chip, tight squeeze but it's a lovely job inside.

That SCART plug is manly. The only ones that I can find always worry me that they are going to break if I look at them wrong. Where do you get solid SCART plugs like that?system11 wrote:I made up my own because all the ones on ebay were rubbish.

There's a good reason to buy them too - if you're using good shielded cables, and plan to put in the resistors and caps there's no way to safely wedge it all into the standard plastic ones. You can get the resistors in those but that's it. The inside of those metal ones is physically bigger, and so is the cable clasp.

Re: Mega Drive/Genesis RGB cables
I'll get one of them when I require a SCART head when making an NTSC RGB SCART cable for my GameCube out of the DTerminal and composite cables I have now. :3
Re: Mega Drive/Genesis RGB cables
I have no particular problems to fit all the components in a standard scart shell:system11 wrote: There's a good reason to buy them too - if you're using good shielded cables, and plan to put in the resistors and caps there's no way to safely wedge it all into the standard plastic ones. Caps need to be rated 10V or they're too big.
Once it's finished and tested OK I fill the shell with hot glue as I always do with scart connectors so nothing moves inside even if the cable is pulled harshly.
Of course the high end metal connectors with bigger shell and gold-plated pins are better (a little too heavy maybe) but if a customer doesn't want to pay a higher price I will use a standard one no problem.
That connector can be ordered from Farnell (that's where I get them from) but if you're not in Europe shipping will be a lot more:
http://export.farnell.com/jsp/home/home ... _DIRECTEXP
(part# 5096364)
It's also possible to get this kind of connector with more room inside:
http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/9423/25366706.jpg
good also for making BNC-to-scart cables.
Re: Mega Drive/Genesis RGB cables
Yeah, me neither. The infamous "spider RGB" cables also come that way.MKL wrote:I have no particular problems to fit all the components in a standard scart shellsystem11 wrote: There's a good reason to buy them too - if you're using good shielded cables, and plan to put in the resistors and caps there's no way to safely wedge it all into the standard plastic ones. Good idea! On the last few I've made, I just put some blobs of hot glue on either half of the shell where the cable enters so that when you tighten down the shell, it mashes the cable into the glue and holds it in place there, like a strain relief.MKL wrote:Once it's finished and tested OK I fill the shell with hot glue as I always do with scart connectors so nothing moves inside even if the cable is pulled harshly.
Yeah, I tried ordering from them a while back and when you get to the end of the processes it basically tells you you can'tMKL wrote:That connector can be ordered from Farnell (that's where I get them from) but if you're not in Europe shipping will be a lot more
