RIP Pete Postlethwaite

Post by GaijinPunch »

My first RIP thread ever (that I remember) and totally worth it. Pete Postlethwaite, perhaps the most underrated actor ever, passed away at young age of 64. He had tons of non-major rolls, but was fucking awesome in all of them. If you're not familiar, he rocked the house as Mr. Kobayashi in The Usual Suspects and a very small roll as The Florist in The Town which is surprisingly awesome.

EDIT:

can't really add much to the OP. An absolute legend. Very sad indeed, a huge loss.

Used to see him every now and then wandering around Liverpool when i studied there - one of the few people i felt a little awestruck seeing.

Will watch "In the Name of the Father" over this week.

Google autocomplete had some fun at the great man's expense. Type in Pete Postlethwaite and the autocomplete suggests adding the following (in order):

inception
cancer
the town
imdb
wiki
movies
nose
ethnicity
james and the giant peach
pronounciation

He was in Inception huh? I don't remember it. D: There is some role he was in that I thought fit him perfectly that I can't seem to find. Anyway, he fit any role to himself, and always seemed bigger than the scripted character would suggest, as any great actor. He will be sorely missed.

He's in a ton of movies I've seen. Too bad he had to die on my birthday.

Yeah, he's a supporting actor in a shit-ton of solid movies. Very sad to see him go and so early :(

It's not often that I miss an actor but he WILL be missed!

Awww, terrible! :(

I never thought it he was an underrated actor, I think its unanimously agreed he was excellent, but I would have liked to have seen him in more films.
I was thinking the other day how he was the only good thing in The Town, and now he's gone. Bloody hell. :(

He was Cylian Murphy's father who died, and willed him the company. An almost non-speaking roll.

Boy, you really are retarded.

Why's that?
The Town received mixed reviews but Postlethwaite put in a compelling performance, this was the actor's last film to be released before his death on Sunday.

Perhaps it's your lack of ability to identify weak films that's retarded... or did you just forget Postlethwaite was even in it?

Oho, now I remember those scenes. Thanks for that!

I coulda SWORN he was in Van Helsing (...and other things). But that's Alun Armstrong. Both were born in 1946.

Brassed Off? It's probably the film he's most remembered for in the UK, but I'm not sure how much exposure it had in other countries - it's *very* UK-centric.

Although his reasons for hunting a Tyrannosaur were suspect. I suspect he was a he was a solid, if not unusual actor.
Come to think of it, he didn't look at all well in Skykid's favourite recent movie.

I didn't realize how much stuff he's been in until I checked his IMDB. He was great in The Usual Suspects.

I don't know how "mixed" the reviews can be when it has a 94% aggregate score (and 92% among "top critics") on Rottentomatoes.

Image Was waiting for the inevitable RT quote. Without wishing to turn this into a movie discussion thread, it's worth 94% in cloud-cuckoo, head-up-your-ass land, and, as is the case with most inept 'critics', the positive reviews and resulting aggregate on RT are baloney as usual. It was watchable, yes. Terrible, no. Dull, certainly. Throwaway, absolutely.
I quoted this review...
"A film can only be as riveting as its ability to have the audience believe or suspend belief, and though The Town takes steps toward authenticity, it fails to meet even the basic requirements of plausibility."
...because it's the most succint and accurate appraisal I could find, and a perfect synopsis of the Affleck vehicle that should never have been after his painful lack of ability was exposed in Gigli. Simply put, some reviewers are wrong, some are right. The guy above is right. All very black and white. RIP Pete Postlethwaite.

I'm pretty sure anything Ben Affleck touches is horrible.

IF that's how you feel about reviewers, then why bring up the quote about mixed reviews? You first took refuge in reviewers opinions, then dismiss them when presented with actual information? Some consistency would be nice.

That's why this one is "surprisingly" awesome. It's in the same vein as Heat... they even do a hat tip to it if you're quick.

Totally right. I don't give a shit what other people think. The movie was well put together. Postlethwaite was probably the best in it, but it was also nice to see John Hamm not bang every chick in sight.
