Newbie needs help

Post by Midey »

(I am very sorry if it is wrong forum category, I am new here/Sorry for my bad English)

SHMUPS is something new for me, so far I bought only XBLA versions (Guwange, Sky Stage and Omega Five). I was thinking about what I could buy as my first retail game. Any help? (I own European console)

On 360 I'd recommend Mushihimesama Futari Platinum version, it's region-free and shouldn't be too expensive.

OK several questions then:
1: Should I buy from Play-Asia?
1a: Will I get my money back if package will not be delivered?
2: Should I get DeathSmiles first?
2a: Is Futari harder than DS?
3: Is Co-op included in Futari?

Not sure about the money-back, check their policies.
No, go for Futari first. The modes included have ones really nice for starters. I can't remember what it was called but the way it works (sort of) every time you go up a difficulty mode it's like adding another layer of bullets every time. So it scales well for practice..
Yes and no, hard to explain.
Pretty much all shmups have a two-player mode.

Definitely my favorite shmup, and it's actually affordable now.

Raiden Fighters Aces isn't just one fantastic game, it's THREE.
No need to import either as it has a Europe localization.
Of course, that's just an opinion.
Always seeking netplay fans to play emulated arcade games with.

Just get Mushi. Its a terrific starting points as the game is fun and scoring simplistic.

There is a Novice mode for all three modes ( 1.5 / Manic / Ultra )

Plus theres a DLC expansion if you want to add more gaming fun.
Espgaluda III needs to happen.

It's a collection of three Raiden Fighters games.

Raiden Fighters (1996)
Raiden Fighters 2: Operation Hell Dive (1997)
Raiden Fighters Jet (1998)

Raiden Fighters Aces itself was released in 2008 in Japan, 2009 in the United States and isn't out in Europe until 2011.

1:Yes, I've been a customer for many years and not once have they ever did me wrong.
please use my affiliate link. if you do end up using PA.

1a: No, they will send a replacement package. However they do have good customer service and are willing to answer questions.

2: I think Futari is a better starting point than DS. I would wait for the european release of DS.

2:a save novice mode, yes. however, almost all cave games have a jump in difficulty during the later stages.

3: Yes, except IIRC not in Arrange mode.

STGet!

In this order:

Espgaluda II Regionfree
Mushi Futari Regionfree
Raiden Fighters Aces (3 games in 1 - all totally awesome)
Raiden IV ? Dunno if it's available in EU, but it's great fun.
Deathsmiles (great Horizontal game with several difficulty levels and loads of extra modes)

Surprised nobody mentioned 'galuda II (unless I missed it) GREAT fun, scoring system is simple enough, and I can't stress enough how much FUN this games is once you figure out how to score big. SO SATISFYING.

Crimzon Clover. Go ahead and preorder it, or just download the trial. Lots of fun danmaku, and potential for many different levels of play.

ESPGALUDA II is a great game, it's just not very beginner friendly.

You will be able to dl the full version, right? I really don't want it in a jewel case.

I doubt it. You could if you were intent on torrenting, but considering that Yotsubane didn't leave version 0.30 up for download I doubt it.

Two more questions:
1: Is that hard to beat DeathSmiles without continues?
2: Who is best/worst character in DS?

Sorry, if I am annoying...

Deathsmiles is the easiest cave game to beat without continues. Well I heard DSII is even easier, but I havent played that. Just pick level 1 difficulty on all stages and make sure you get the extra life cakes.

I'd say the best char to 1cc the game with is Follett and Rosa. The best char to score with would be Windia and Sakura. I think Casper would be the worst char imo.

I can never find those damned cakes! I didn't know the characters were better/worse than each other, and have been using casper the whole time, just because of the sweet blue lightning beam thingy. Time to switch it up :(

Maybe that DL site english site might stock it (here's the sites link with a genrel shmup search with all the porn taken out, that site is 99% porn unfortunatley)
http://eng.dlsite.com/fsr/=/dn/20/wt/a% ... c/1/page/1

I havnt used them myself but ive been eyeing up that Near Space Fantasy(zone clone) and Gigantic army, still the games they have isnt that extensive, mostly its the more niche stuff that wont ever see normal doujin retail.

Appreciated, but I just decided to stop being a baby about it and ordered the CD from rancor's site. Thanks for the porn link though!

I'v been in the very same boat as you, just that i didn't buy Sky Stage ;)
My first retail game (about a month ago) was Mushihimesama Futari 1.5 Platinum Edition, and i just love it. And it is really cheap compared to other Cave games, so i'd go for it as first retail game again without hesitating, you can't go wrong there.

about your questions:
1) i bought it from play-asia
1a) i once had a game getting lost in nirvana. after quite a bit of grace period (about 2 months) they offered me to send it again or give me a dicount coupon of the same value. So you don't get your money back per se, but you don't loose any money either if something happens to your package
2) DeathSmiles won't run on your european console. There is an americian localisation and an european one is on the way afaik.
2a) Futari has a novice mode, but that one is so boring that even i as a total noob 1CCed it on my very first try. Now i'm training Black Label (DLC for 1200 MS points) mode on Original diff. Stage 1 and 2 are a no issue, but stage 3 tears me to shreds. But although it's hard, it's extremely motivating.
3) Yes there is. But i couldn't try it out yet, but i will finally be able to this evening.
