Troubleshoot: RayForce MAME

Post by JGcontraman »

Having trouble running RayForce in MAME. Help would be nice. I use 136. I know it might be best to upgrade but I can run all my games at a good capacity. Thinking of dling the latest.

RayForce on MAME has got hefty system requirements. It's less demanding than, say, Galaxy Force II, but still more demanding than most 2D games on MAME. If your CPU isn't fast enough, you can't do much about it.

Arnt old versions of MAME less resourse hungry then newer versions? (I dont know for sure maybe someone else can pipe in)

That been said theres always the Taito Legends 2 pack for the pc you could try that, but it wont tate, or you could try hunting down the old port of Rayforce for the PC, dunno if it tates though.

The PC port of Rayforce isn't good - it's stuck in the Saturn port's chopped-down yoko mode, and cannot tate. Ruins the score play, since you can't lock onto enemies outside of the limited screen area.

What Spec pc are you using as rayforce works fine on my laptop (2.20ghz, 2 gb of ram and intel gfx) with graphics filters.

also remember to tick sync to monitor refresh as you will get choppy play due to the original output being 58.97hz

This is generally the case, but moreso with versions of MAME past 0.136 as the MAMEDevs decision to convert the entire thing to C++ begins to be implemented from there onwards.

According to this page at MAWS the latest changes to the game itself in regards to emulation was in MAME 0.138u2 but nothing to do with performance. Use the changes in there to gauge what version you should try and get to run it. The Lagless MAMEPro 99 build is pretty performance-friendly for me but you may have some emulation issues running it on that if that page is anything to go by.

The ROM just won't start up. I'm not getting any other errors besides a regular MAME error telling me that the game can't load.

Are you missing the parent romset (gunlock)? You need that for rayforce/rayforcj to run.
