100 Super Famicom games in 10 minutes video

Post by greg »

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgzjpG1FAOE

I've uploaded this video back to Youtube. The video is of SFC games that were never released in North America. The guy who originally made this video also made a couple other of these videos. One was more of a version 1.5 because he was confused about which games had been released in which regions. The third was more of an 80 SFC games in 8 minutes type of video. Well unforunately, he managed to get banned on Youtube for whatever reason, and I lost contact with the guy. I had been discussing with him about sending him footage of several other SFC games to build another SFC games video. Now that he's gone, my friend and I found his first video that was uploaded to some Spanish language Web video site. I snagged it and re-uploaded it to Youtube. People need to see this video!

So some games like Terranigma and Twinbee were released for the Super Nintendo in the UK, and the very first Sailor Moon game was released in France. And naturally, many of these games were subsequently re-released on other platforms later on, such as the PS1, PSP, and the DS. So, with the idea of making a video featuring SFC games that were never released for the North American SNES, my Undamned and I want to make a second one of these videos. So, here is a list of what I've put together for a second video, with input from my friends Undamned and Specineff. Now all I have to do is get my VCR out and start recording these onto a tape and figure out my video capture card. Between UD and myself, we have quite a chunk of these games already. For the rest, I can load the roms up on my hacked xbox for more footage. I've been doing a bit of research on some of these. A lot of them I have not played yet, but these will be interesting to try out.

That's another 100. So what do you think? Can we all milk out another 100 for a third video? I want to focus on real great games that people would be interested in and not add total fluff to the list like endless sports games or too many mahjong or pachinko simulator games. Any inputs? Again, the intent is to display SFC games that were never released in North America. I understand The Firemen was released in Europe and that Final Fantasy 5 has subsequently been released on other consoles later on. Just focusing on the Super Nintendo system. Maybe for a third video we could delve into Sufami Turbo games, but I only own three of them myself and I'd have to figure out emulation for the rest. I'd like to gather game suggestions, please.

i had been planning to do something similar to this around the 20th Anniversary but , as with anything, work/life tended to get in the way.

I did a quick from screen "test footage" shoot - pointing the cam at my RGB monitor , plugging the game in and just recording away.

here is how it came out , needs some work and would take the audio output straight out the PVM next time :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obRL7aUk9nE

I'd be up for suggesting some games at the least - will have a think when i get home :)

Thanks! I've seen your vid already, actually. I'd forgotten about Back to the Future Part 2! Never knew about it until I watched the AVGN video and how it's actually not a bad game, unlike those lousy LJN games that were a total joke. And when it comes to Godzilla and stuff, I really am ignorant about what was on the SFC and not on the SNES. I think Specineff has an Ultraman SFC game that was never released here too.

So yeah, definitely any suggestions would be great. I posted this on the racketboy forum too, but I'm not sure if I'll get many responses there.

NEWS FLASH! Axelay was released for the North American Super Nintendo. I own it, too. Tee hee hee.

The purpose of the video is to show what we didn't get, not a list of games in general for the console.

Actually, I just realized that SaGa Fronteir was released for the PSX. Romancing SaGa 1-3 were for the SFC. Romancing SaGa 3 was listed in the first video. Maybe I can squeeze Super Bomberman 4 into the video I'm making.

Roll on video 2! :)

I enjoyed that, even found a couple of ones in there that caught my interest (is Great Battle V a valuable one?).

Well, no reason really. The first video was not of my own making. It belonged to some other dude who managed to get his ass banned on Youtube. We can include the first one. According to Wikipedia, there's no official English release of the game. We'll try to put as much variety as possible into each video, and I think I may forgo some of the DBZ Super Butouden games in favor of greater variety. UD mentioned to me last night that he has the B-Daman game.

Thanks for the list! With some more input and using the Sufami Turbo library, I'm sure we can come up with a third video. For now, I'm gonna unpack my VCR and start recording some stuff. I just got a bunch of SFC games from YAJ I'd ordered through Shoppingmalljapan.com.

Ah I see - I wasn't sure if you were looking only for SFC exclusive titles, and thought you maybe didn't include Cyber Knight because it's on the PCE too. :)

Anyways, I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of more obscure stuff that I forgot about - will post again if more come to mind.
But just to get a clear idea about the above matter: do we include multiplatform titles that might or might not play/look differently on the SFC or want the list to stay as exclusive as possible? (Emerald Dragon comes to mind)

Awesome.

Wrecking Crew 98? I have to check this out, as I like the original mid 80s NES/Famicom game.

I'll start recording soon. I have a Hauppage video capture card. I installed it when I first built my computer about 4 years ago, and I've only used it once. I used it for screen captures for the "nudity" bath/shower scenes in Sakura Taisen 1 and 2. I'd never seen anyone document this before, so I put it on my homepage: http://stevethefish.net/life/life037.htm

Since then, I haven't really had any motivation to really use it. Now I'm interested in figuring out how to record video off it.

Tell me about it. Even a side-scrolling 16-bit game freaks me out. I played Clock Tower via emulation until the Scissor Man jumped out of the shower and started to chase me. Freaked me out and I couldn't play it anymore. I just can't get into horror games at all.

I noticed that Lode Runner Twin showed up in the second video list, so I replaced it with B-Daman. I just recorded the first 24 games on my VCR, just from my own SFC collection. I'll record some more later. I have several more cartridges before I'll start borrowing from UD and roms on my hacked Xbox.

EDIT: Holy crap, I left off Tactics Ogre. That's added now to the list.

I'm having problems with my stupid Hauppauge video capture card. It's old, from like 1998 or so, and I'm about ready to chuck it in the garbage. The darn thing fills up the RAM so fast then it vomits all over itself and I'm unable to stop the capturing once I begin. I get an hourglass and I have to do an end task after it crashes.

I'lll be heading to Specineff's place Thursday to do a bunch of recording Thursday night. He has a USB capture device and we'll bypass the whole VCR part altogether. It should look pretty sharp as a result since my VCR is getting pretty old and doesn't record a picture very clearly.

Well, Specineff has a Hauppauge HD PVR 1212, which is great for recording HD videos, but the standard definition inputs on that device are apparently just for decoration. So, I bought an AVerMedia DVD EZMaker which is said to be great for recording S-video and composite videos. Once I get that, then I'll start recording videos for for part two of the 100 SFC games in 10 minutes video.

In the meantime, last night I took a video of my recent Super Famicom purchases. 16 SFC games are now added to my collection. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HztCCkmKi-w

Oh yeah. I love strategy games, dare I say it on this forum, even moreso than shmups. I only found out about Jutei Senki recently, and after trying it out a little on an emulator, I had to buy it.

Undamned let me borrow a bunch of his Super Famicom games that I don't own to make for the video. All I need now is the USB video capture device I've ordered and I can start putting together the gameplay video. He also let me borrow his Super Wildcard in order to play roms on the native hardware and not through an emulator, which is swanky.

Re: 100 Super Famicom games in 10 minutes video

Well, I have been very busy with my Avermedia S-Video capture device, the Christmas gift I got for myself. Unfortunately, my laptop didn't care for it and the sound would snap and pop intermittently. Must be some sort of software conflict, because the device is supposed to be made for Win7 64bit. Weird. What's nice about this device is that there is apparently ZERO time delay through the software, so I am able to play the games directly from my SNES through the capture device with no problems at all!

To this point, I have recorded 95 games and have edited the footage down to bite-size segments. So far I'm clocking in at 9 minutes and 30 seconds with those 95 games, which leaves about six seconds each for the remaining five. Tonight I'm meeting my friend ncc1701p at Starbucks and he'll let me borrow his Dragon Quest 3, Final Fantasy 5, Torneko no Daibouken, and Tenchi Muyo RPG games. Between donations from him, Specineff, Undamned and the bulk of them from my own collection, 49 of the 100 games were recorded from actual cartridges. For the rest of them, the vast majority was recorded on native Nintendo hardware through UD's Super Wild Card he let me borrow, with a laptop acting as a game server providing the roms.

I've had a lot of fun playing these games and I've discovered some great new games. Here are some random thoughts:
* I'm glad I bought Jutei Senki. I really, really like it and I want to seriously get into it soon. I really like strategy games, and this game is fairly unique.
* I can't figure out Z Gundam. I'll have to spend some time translating the manual, or at least see if somebody's already written up a FAQ on gamefaqs.com.
* I cannot play survival horror games, especially when the protagonist is so helpless. Clock Tower bugs the heck out of me. When that asshole with the scissors pops up out of the bathtub, it scares the crap out of me and the girl can't seem to run away fast enough. I guess I'm supposed to run and hide, and the other orphans who live at the end of the game depends on what I choose to do in the game. So if I want Laura to live, I just have to not see her hanging in the bathtub by the shower head. But ugh, I'm such a sissy to play survival horror games.
* Battle Cross is THE NEATNESS. I love that game! It reminds me so much of Atari's Badlands, which was basically Super Sprint with cannons. While everyone was trying to ape F-Zero and Mario Kart with the Mode 7 graphics, it is so refreshing to discover this game that keeps it completely 2D. I want this game!
* Hamelin no Violin Hiki is a very sweet game. Very unique, by Enix, and I wonder how much it goes for?
* Dragon Knight IV was interesting. The Dragon Knight series was a hentai fantasy RPG series for computers in Japan. Dragon Knight 3 was released domestically as "Knights of Xentar" for DOS/Windows. Dragon Knight 4 was stripped of most of its ecchiness and was released for the SFC. It apparently has a solid strategy tactics gameplay to it, thus Banpresto released it for the SFC.
* Gambare! Daiku no Gensan is a super neat platformer by Irem. UD put this game on the list, and I like it a lot.
* Go Go Ackman 3. I've never played any of these games, but I really liked playing this game. The part I recorded was a shmup level.
* Bookmans has Lord Monarch for only $6. I didn't buy it, so instead I've played it on the emulator, but I cannot figure out how the game is supposed to be fun. I saw a dragon walking around a mountain in the next island over, so I had a man build a bridge so I can send someone over there to get eaten by the dragon. He wouldn't come out of the cave, so I had my guy try to destroy a house in the neighboring country. Maybe there's a walkthrough on how to play it.
* For some reason, I now like Magical Drop. I had it for the NGPC, but I sold it to Jon many years ago. Playing it again on the SFC, I kinda like it now. Go figure.
* I like Flying Hero! I want to get that game now. Also Spriggan Powered. I played both for the first time at last. UD teased me for being a Super Famicom nut and still I'd never played these games. Well, I finally have, so shut up!
* Votoms still sucks. I gave it a bad rating on my website, and it still gets a bad rating.
* Astro Boy was actually more interesting the second time around. I'd played this a bit many years ago and did a quick mini-review of it for my SFC site, but I didn't care for it much back then. Of course it's not as incredible as Treasure's Astro Boy game for the GBA, but it's a nice platformer.
* I like Bomberman 3 better than 4. I don't know... I just didn't care for it much.
* Super Pinball II: Amazing Odyssey is great fun! I never knew of this series. The original was released domestically, but this sequel seems way cooler. I'd like to buy this one too.

So, I've made some changes to the list, so here is the final 100 list for this video.

Nice job! I'm looking forward to the video. It's insane the amount of Super Famicom games out there that never made it overseas.

If memory serves this is by the same guys who later did Last Gladiator and Necronomicon on the Saturn.

* Hamelin no Violin Hiki is a very sweet game. Very unique, by Enix, and I wonder how much it goes for?
very little ! 1480 yen for the last copy i saw a few days back - i already have it and, yes, it's a fantastic game with bags of charm.

My desire to make a vid is dropping now that a sterling job has been done here! Hats off!
My vid idea has gone somewhat , um, leftfield so we may still do something... but it'll be a bit weird to put it mildly.

Re: 100 Super Famicom games in 10 minutes video

Post by greg »

I had to postpone my Starbucks rendezvous with my friend until tonight. His four SFC games will be the final four games I will record for this video. If I can meet him this evening, then I will have the new video uploaded either tonight or sometime tomorrow.

Somebody on Youtube had sent me one of the other videos that the original guy had uploaded, and it seems to be the other version of the first video. I remember that he wanted to redo his video because he'd discovered that some games had been released in other countries and had been re-released on other consoles in English. Front Mission had been released domestically on the DS, for example, so he removed it from his second video. He was also mistaken in believing that Clock Tower had been released domestically because the sequel had been released for the US PS1. He was primarily trying to do a video for SFC games that were never released to any outside countries and were never ported to other consoles. Well, I'm not going to knock myself out trying to figure out what hasn't been ported to other consoles. Retro games are constantly being made available on Wii Ware and Xbox Live it seems, and since I have neither of those consoles, I don't care to check. I don't care if Do Re Mi Fantasy has been released on Wii Ware.

So anyhow, here's the other video, which is actually 101 Super Famicom games in 10 minutes. The majority of the games are the same between the two, but with some differences.

Brilliant, thanks greg, a few more titles in there that have piqued my interest. :o

Just wanted to ask, I have a platform game for the SFC called Zenki (FX?), and it's different to the one shown here around 9 mins. Is that a straight up platformer and is it any good?

Also, if anyone is thinking of getting Lupin the 3rd, don't do it, it's a whole pile of ass.

The first Zenki game was featured in the original 100 SFC games video. This one is the second. You still play as Zenki, although I used a password to skip ahead to level 8 where you play as that cute girl instead of Zenki. The very first part of level one has you doing some sort of screaming match against some other dude, kinda like paper rock scissors or something. I couldn't figure it out, so I skipped ahead.

As for Lupin, how much time did you spend with it? I think the game is excellent. (Then again, I like Hyper Iria and that isn't very popular.) The control is a bit difficult to get used to, but once you get into it, it is a very nice platformer that focuses on problem solving rather than action. Level design does look repetitive, but then again, the game has you in a big building for most of the game. You do get outside of the building after many levels.

Sorry for mentioning Zenki FX above, that's the PC-FX game I was getting confused with. I was still unaware there were two platform Zenki games on the SFC though, interesting.

As for Lupin it's pretty darn horrifying. Stage after stage, all grey, bland and graphically identical, with puzzles that are poorly thought out and often frustrating because of the backtracking required. It wouldn't be so bad if the controls weren't horribly sluggish and badly implemented, but having to listen to the same theme tune looping ad infinitum is too much to bear.
I didn't ever make it out of the building, I gave up hope after about the fourth stage because I didn't think there would be a change of scenery. Really disappointed me this one. :(
