Because there wouldn't be a proper way to enlarge a vertically displayed game for LCDs. Either you give the user the ability to display them in the original ratio and play around with the settings, or you give the user an abnormal ratio which is totally unlike the original. Which sounds better?
I think both the original aspect ratio and the full screen panorama mode should be offered. However, if the developer can't or doesn't want to do a vertical letterbox for their original aspect ratio and also doesn't plan on offering a TATE option, then they should just do the panorama screen version of it rather than not releasing the game at all.

For example, Twin Cobra for the Sega Genesis was released only in a 4:3 panorama aspect ratio. Since that game was not released for any other console in the USA after the Genesis, I think it is better that they released it despite being in a panorama screen orientation than not releasing it all. The changed aspect ratio does require alternate strategies for stage 5 boss and stage 8 boss, but other than that the game plays relatively the same.

Raiden Project PS1 actually offers all three screen options. Horizontal corresponds to a Tate option, Vertical is original aspect ratio in a vertical letterbox, and Panorama is a vertically compressed/horizontally stretched orientation that effectively reduces the size of the vertical letterbox black bars that would appear. Testing shows that Raiden 1 and Raiden 2 play nearly the same in Panorama screen mode as in Vertical screen mode except for that the boss battles are just a bit more closer proximity.

Taito Legends 2 offers Original Aspect Ratio On or Off. Original Aspect Ratio On is vertical letterbox and instead of just plain black bars there are graphics on the sides. Original Aspect Ratio Off is a vertically compressed/horizontally strecthed screen aspect ratio. In at least one case, Gekirindan, the gameplay is actually smoother in panorama than in original aspect ratio, not sure why but that's how it is.

There are known problems with this thread:

The video emulation isn't 100% accurate.
The sound emulation isn't 100% accurate.

Type OK or buy more ports of already-emulated games to continue

Is that a pavillion DV6? Thats what I am using. The audio randomly stops working and sometimes the HDD doesn't boot.

Thats 2 reasons why emulation is not so good for me.

That's Aru-san's laptop. (Dunno which model.) It was running RayStorm just fine (full framerate, to boot!) until he approached the stage 1 boss, then everything froze into a purple, buzzing mess.

Let's just say i'm glad there is no way to [edit] properly [/edit] emulate SH3 until now.
This place would go apeshit.

Not because I am full of hate or unwilling to spend my money but just because today Cave's emulation on MAME is a far better product than the actual 360 Cave's releases according to me

The whole reply, 'nemo, was right on IMO...but this quoted section hit the nail on the head for me.

Poorly done ports, no worldwide distribution, etc....

I'm HAPPY to pay Cave when I can, or when given the opportunity. But here in the US, I'm nothing to Cave - not a missed sale, nothing.

BUT I'm a fan of their games, because I believe personally that they do it best. And emulation delivers the most accurate experience IMO.

I'll support the ONGOING developments in emulation - I'd love to see Pink Sweets, MMP, DDPDFK and Ibara emulated sooner than later, as Cave can't be bothered to SELL THEM TO ME.

This argument will never end...I look forward to the day that someone posts in THIS or a similar thread "OMGZ MUCHI PORK EMULATED IN MAME!?!?"

VROOOOOMM - that's the search engine firing up ;)

I hope everyone is appreciating the carnival atmosphere around here.

In 6 months time MAME will be releasing the games before Cave do.

Stay tuned for the "Ports; gets too close to emulation for comfort sometimes?" where we discuss when the 360 port of MAME comes out.

What 360 port has been poorly done except the DDPDOJBLEX port, which wasn't even done by Cave?

Next step is a class action against Cave, for designing protections that slow the emulation process. This is WRONG.

A Cautionary Tale

I used to be an emulation user, indeed a heavy emulation user.

I emulated to the point that it affected my 'real life'. The real world appeared to respond to my interaction 2 frames too quickly, totally throwing my coordination. Dealing with and talking to people was even more difficult as I got freaked out by the weirdly synchronised audio that wasn't buffered in any way :?

To replicate the lag I had become accustomed to, I turned to drink which provided some respite but not enough (a single frame). Ultimately, I took to sedatives which almost gave me the laggy view of the world I desired.

I say almost, as for some reason I still had trouble keeping my balance in the real world. I finally resolved this after staring through the cracked windows of my squat (my house was long gone by this point) - a single vertical crack resulted in half of the world being slightly disjiont from the other and *da da* my unbalanced disorientation was gone! A single strip of creased sellotape on my glasses was all that was needed to complete my 'emulated' view of the world!

By this point of course my demeanour, ridiculous glasses and obsession with maintaining my ROM set had reduced me to a miserable shadow of myself.

But thankfully, fate was on my side. A chance meeting with my sister resulted in her getting over her anger and taking pity on me. She took me in and set about researching my affliction. She picked up a dirt cheap R-Type PCB off Ebay and a rudimentary Supergun (luckily these are available on the NHS in the UK). Right from the first credit I felt like I had been awaked from a muddy 1000 year slumber - I was saved

What would you consider "dirt cheap" for an R-type board? I've seen them for like $300 I think... Could be wrong about that though. I would consider that expensive for my tastes. Right now I don't think I would spend much over $150 for a board, and it would have to be something I really wanted.

£35 with Japanese ROMs. It was a bit below the going rate at the time but not by much.

wow. That's a nice price. I did a quick search and System11 was trying to sell one about a year ago for 150 pounds (I don't have the symbol on my keyboard :) )
Thats more like what I thought they went for.

Strangely there also happens to be 2 R-type cabs on ebay right now.

I'm playing the devil's advocate, dude - chill.

I'm pretty fuckin' disappointed in Guwange XBLA, though...if you must know :).

But, as I mentioned somewhere here, I buy every little nugget of stuff I can get from Cave. And IN MY OPINION emulation is a better experience. That opinion is drawn from COMPARISON and CONTRASTING of emulated games vs. their PS2 \ XBOX360 counterparts.

Now playing PCB's on the other hand? Nothing beats it. That's why I own 2 cabinets and a few of the cheaper Cave boards...among other games.
