i didn't watch anything for 3 months tho and concentrated on music for a bit otherwise the numbers would be a lot higher

Anyway, finished watching Night of the Hunter (1955) last night (had not seen it in years.) This is genuinely an American classic and belongs on the AFI top 100 (but will never be admitted to that list.) It was interesting watching the documentary and seeing how close a connection it had to the silent films and also its connection to german expressionism. It had been many years since I'd seen this film and I'd forgotten how much this film is trying to push the boundaries. Amazing use of minimalism and high contrast black & white that add to the dream-like elements of the film.

Night of the Hunter may also be alone in being a horror movie for children. I think 10 or 12 years old might be a fantastic time to see this film. Many of the adult elements might not make sense until later, but the bulk of the film draws amazing parallel to what children are reading today. In this sense, Night of the Hunter is actually rather far ahead of its time, being a gothic looking horror story for children. The reception of this film in the US is to this day pathetic, so much so that the director never made another film. What a waste.

night of the hunter is deffo a (slightly)hidden gem. certain scenes such as the lake and the rafting down the river scene look so beautiful it hurts.also to have such a cold hearted bad guy in such an early film was pretty ballsy.
i remember the first time i caught this late night on t.v. as soon as robert mitchum brought out his knife to show to the kids i was hooked

Please tell me you are kidding Richie. That show was horrible! My g/f watched it; she got all mad when they canceled it. The first season was bad enough, but the second was almost unwatchable. Watching the characters interact was painful. The leads had no chemistry and it felt very forced.

Especially if you have read the Sword of Truth series, this TV show was a joke!

Seriously, the whole 'Hercules/Xena' thing died like 15 years ago.

Watched The Town. Basil Iwank surfaced yet again to Produce  . Love that name! Kinda sticks in the head like Mary Fukuto in the Cheers credits.
Good film, not great but well worth watching. The London born actress Rebecca Hall is....interesting to look at.
Yet another realistic film that gets Rotten Tomatoes all frothed up :x . They just can't resist giving perfect scores to films about real life (or close to it). Bus174, Gomorrah etc.

I have to admit I have less and less patience with films that are not fantastic in some way. Was discussing films with a colleage at work and Kramer vs. Kramer came up. I'd seen the film some time ago, but my lack of interest isn't just toward the whole divorce situation, but toward the mundane subject matter. Seriously, I want a film to be transportational or at least grand on some level. Whether the characters are simply bigger than live, or the film itself drifts into fantastic (or even fantasy) elements, this much I require.

I just can't stand 'realistic dramas' or what-not. All you directors can shove 'On Golden Pond' up your wazoo. Give me a space opera any day.

...hmmm, maybe if the Fondas had to revert to canabalism...

must be an american nostalgia thing as i've noticed people from u.s are quite fond of the boogens. i would give it a 6 out of 10 or something.I like crazy weird characters and over the top deaths and this had neither.also the monsters were pretty rubbish too. it was perfectly watchable and definitely above average just nothing badass really happened.

i watched the carrier (1988) this film was great fun and weird at the same time.it's about an outsider who catches a disease from some weird creature then anything he touches becomes contaminated and if anyone touches a contaminated object they melt.total nonsense/confusing plot but i loved it.I like films like these where it's a struggle just to understand what is going on 8) .also most of the characters are idiots/nasty which i also like.not very well shot and some inane dialogue(this actually makes it better in places) but the original ideas more than make this a no budget gem
ALSO THIS FILM HAD REDNECKS IN BIN BAGS FIGHTING WITH AXES

Watched the two versions of 'The Killers (46 & 64 respectively). Probably would not recommend seeing them so close together, even though both are ultimately rather different films, each good examples of what was being done well at those time periods. The former makes good use of black and white, and uses its time to paint a thicker plot and makes the knocked off man ('The swede') a more sympathetic character. The latter with its high contrast colors and dissonant soundtrack is precisely what I'd expect from a 60's noir film. Unlike the 46 version, the main character in the newer take are the hitmen themselves, and the whole vibe of the film is leaner and meaner.

Not sure how many noir fans are on the board, but these films are each worth seeing once, and though their core plot is the same, there are elements of each that stand out. The latter version may be of interest to Tarintino fans, as some elements of the movie seem right from Resevoir Dogs/Pulp Fiction. I wouldn't put this set way up on your list, but it made for a decent rental.

The cabinet of Dr. Calagari (1919?). One of the first horror films and also an art film with strange, surealistic backgrounds. The one streaming on netflix has a nice soundtrack.

Every now and then I browse this thread for some movies to watch. I watched some of 'em!
Mysterious Skin, Apocalypse Now and Moon were all pretty great. Heart of Darkness was kind of boring for my tastes, but it was okay. Next up on my queue are Inception and Tropic Thunder.

I just watched The Goonies for about the 400th time. I think it my favourite movie ever without any irony.

I love how rude the uncut version is for a kid's film. Swearing, drugs and 'devices of sexual torture' - it has it all!

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was on TV earlier. I was totally freaked out when I realized who's playing Cedric Diggory. Yeah, that's right, that douche from the lame Vampire films.

Watched The Deep (1977) streaming on Netflix. You can make the call whether this is an exploitation film or not. I'll write off the fact that all the bad guys being black has more to do with the local than racism, but when a brotha with an afro surfaces out of the ocean to ravage a helpless white woman on a boat, you know what kind of movie you're watching. Features a guy's head getting devored by a giant moray eel and Jacqueline Bisset's tits. I liked this when I saw it as a kid, I still like it now. You can judge me if you want, but I know all of you went and saw Tron 2 instead of True Grit, so you're no better than me. Maybe worse; I bet those tron outfits don't feature see through nipplege.

Oh yeah, I forgot the voodoo quasi-rape scene. Classy shit!

Edit: To make absolutely clear, a guy's head getting devoured by a moray eel and Bisset's tits are two seperate things. I'm not saying her tits were devoured by a giant eel. What kind of weirdo do you think I am!??

I turned it off 40 odd minutes into it. I couldn't understand head nor tail of it.

I watched SALT (region B blu ray) (7/10).

I tried to watch Metropolis circa 1927 but I could'nt watch it. (region B blu ray)

Human Centipede (6/10) (region B blu ray)

Nausicaa valley of the wind (8/10). (region B blu ray).

I picked up Brandon Lee's Crow from Germany on region B blu ray and Scott Pilgrim is on its way soon as well.

Not as good as Ponyo on the PQ front but its really old now. I think it was made 1986.

It still held up pretty highly imo. I enjoyed it alot and it got quite good reviews. I think professionally speaking it got 4 stars out of 5 for PQ.

As for the movie itself, I'd give it a 3.5/5.
