Personally, I think they removed the slowdown because they thought if US gamers played it and found the game suddenly slowing down at seemingly random points, they would think the game is garbage/broken. Imagine explaining "It's an arcade PCB port with accurate slowdown" to your average US gamer. Yeah.

He's talking about Level 1, which I hadn't really considered before. It's probably very possible that they nerfed Level 1 in the US edition since it's not like they were concerned about fucking with stuff.apple arcade wrote:You kind of have it backwords.

Cave should have added some sorta icon to show its suppose to be slow at certain instances, idk "bullet time!" or something to that effect. If the gamer knows its suppose to be slow, i think they'll appreciate knowing they can survive some really hellish bullet densities.Udderdude wrote:Personally, I think they removed the slowdown because they thought if US gamers played it and found the game suddenly slowing down at seemingly random points, they would think the game is garbage/broken. I brought mushihimesama futari 1.5 to a friends and told him "it'll slow down sometimes, but it's meant to" and he had so much fun traversing a dense bullet pattern in the slowed state. I converted him to say the least.
Re: Death Smiles: Countdown to North America Invasion
Presumably they could've added a wait on/off option (titled "slowdown" to avoid confusion), with a simple onscreen explanation of danmaku shooter slowdown. Then again Cave's ports aren't known for being particularly well thought-out.

Exactly, I was only playing Level 1 on the US release. It looks at least 5x times easier. Take a look. That is possible the explanation about why they change the US release: they did that to turn the game easier on Level 1, and remove the slowdown because to the eyes of the common gamer slowdowns will look like a bad programmed game. Without slowdown and with an easier level 1 it should taste better to the american audience. However the bad thing about it is that it broke the rest of the game.CStarFlare wrote:He's talking about Level 1, which I hadn't really considered before. Re: Death Smiles: Countdown to North America Invasion
Level 1 is the same in both versions, same bullet patterns, same as the PCB. Don't let some urban myth start now.
US version is definitely harder across the board, because things move faster. The logic is very simple on that. I've easily put 100 hours into both versions. Most people are going on hearsay.
If the import is harder for you to play then you aren't used to the slower timing and it's actually working against you.

Re: Death Smiles: Countdown to North America Invasion
Hummm.... I will check again. I do not want to start an "urban myth". Thing is I am not really a good player, more a casual shmup fan. I haven´t played the Japanese version for almost a year, then started the US version, played for a couple of weeks and went back to check again the Japanese one. What I felt is not exactly a different bullet pattern, but the pattern itself seems to be presented a little bit slower. Changing from one version to the other is hard for me, but I feel more confident in the US version now (maybe because I have played it more in the past weeks).PsychoGun wrote:Level 1 is the same in both versions, same bullet patterns, same as the PCB. Hey look it's coming to Europe via Rising Star Games! Now all the Euro-region lock whiners have nothing to do with their time.

So will Europe get a "fixed" english version or the same one US gamers got?
Would be interesting if Cave changed the slowdown back.

Can some one confirm if the Standard Edition for North America have the same box art as the Limited Edition version?

Don't think its actually out in stores yet, but I'm going to assume the standard edition has that lame ass standard cover just like the JP one did. That would only make sense since the LE JP had the same art as the LE US version. Can some one confirm if the Standard Edition for North America have the same box art as the Limited Edition version?

Re: Death Smiles: Countdown to North America Invasion
Wow, took me a while to find this thread...
Someone on the GameFAQs board linked a YouTube video comparing the slowdown between Deathsmiles NA (MBL 360) and the PCB in the Ice Palace.
We already knew the slowdown wasn't anywhere near accurate in Deathsmiles NA, but...

Got talking to Ben from Aksys Games today. Better known as Belisarius on the Aksys Games Forums. I asked him about a possible slowdown patch now that RSG is releasing an un-fucked version of DS. Here's what he had to say.
From Twitter:
We are currently testing a patch to implement those adjustments to the slowdown. Don't have an ETA right now though, unfortunately.
Hopefully it'll be out soon. I'll try and remember to let you know once we get a date.

Wow that's really terrible. How could they screw up that badly in a port?
Espgaluda III needs to happen.
Re: Death Smiles: Countdown to North America Invasion
The removed slowdown, as well as the localization itself, were all Cave's doing. Aksys merely licensed and published the game, although that also means they had the rights to "fix" it.
It's not exactly like the game feels unfair with a little less slowdown, though!

Re: Death Smiles: Countdown to North America Invasion
Dare we hope for a full-fledged "wait" toggle to satisfy all players, as opposed to being forced to choose between patching or not as in Deathsmiles IIX?

It makes a huge difference with Death Mode level 2 and Level 999.Estebang wrote:

This is what Aksys told me when I asked about the slowdown:
"A patch is planned, yes. The details concerning it what it contains and when it's coming out are to be announced at a later date."
So I'm guessing this patch will have the slowdowns and some bug fixes too.

That would have been the right decision from the get-go, so I'm hoping that's what we see implemented.BulletMagnet wrote:Dare we hope for a full-fledged "wait" toggle to satisfy all players, as opposed to being forced to choose between patching or not as in Deathsmiles IIX?

Maybe it's better to ensure it will actually be the way it will get implemented?

Re: Death Smiles: Countdown to North America Invasion
Methinks everyone would consider that the optimal way to go, but I'm wondering what the odds are that things actually happen that way - has such a thing ever been added in after-the-fact before, or has every such patch basically said "this is the way things are now, be happy with it" like DSII's did?njiska wrote:That would have been the right decision from the get-go, so I'm hoping that's what we see implemented.
Re: Death Smiles: Countdown to North America Invasion
Someone asked CAVE about a slowdown patch for the NA region on Facebook and this is the response from CAVE:
We are hearing early February from Aksys, but it's best to ask them.

Re: Death Smiles: Countdown to North America Invasion
I'm rather disappointed about this. I actually enjoy the game the way it is, and more slowdown would seem like overkill IMO. Likewise, the Ice Cave doesn't feel like it needs more slowdown. I think some people are overreacting to the change. Like jerks on cave-stg forums who tell people their US scores are not allowed and they should start a new thread for posting them.
If a patch is released, I do not expect that I will download it unless the slowdown can be toggled.
