I'm actually amazed you people can play shmups with pad. I'm not sure how I could get pixel nudging movements on a pad compared to a stick. Taping on a stick feels faster and more precise than tapping on a pad. Especially when doing diagonal taps.

Maybe I should try a saturn pad out if its that precise.

I'm using an unmodded 360-pad, that I had to repair more than once in a while. It was thrown numerous times against walls, I had to change the screws and glue the sticks back together. Its dirty and it rattles, parts of the pcb broke off, but it still gets the job done and I absolutely don't have the necessary patience to get used to an arcadestick.

Typically if I'm going for a serious run I'll use my stick. However much of the time I can't be bothered lug that thing up on my lap so I just go with my dualshock. Its a lot more chill to just kick back in the desk chair and play on a pad than to sit up straight and have this big heavy stick on your legs. The other problem with my stick is that its a Sanwa and its not as good for shmups as Seimitsu due to the longer throw. Sanwa is great for fighting games although in general I prefer Seimitsu overall.

I wish i could use a really good stick and maybe come to like it but i always played with pads. My favorite D-pad is the Saturn one, I also got a USB Saturn pad that i use on my pc, very happy with it.

However lately i am playing a lot with Final burn emulator on a Modded Xbox. The Original Xbox d-pad is not bad but i wish i could use my Saturn pad instead. I even bought a Xbox-usb adapter to try my usb Saturn pad on the xbox but it does not work, seems to only work with a keyboard this thing

Xbox 360 wireless controller for windows here. I love the weight and feel of the that pad. I have always preferred pads over joysticks except for the NeoGeo.

Like I said, I use a PS2 Saturn pad, with a PS2 to PC adapter. For 360, I use the XConverter360.

I've had the same PS2 Saturn pad for like 5 years, I found out the other day it's teh rarez and worth some money, but I'll never sell it.

I also have a stick, but I rarely feel like pulling it out since I usually only have 20 minute gaming sessions.

Had a USB Saturn Pad for a bit it seems like its dying. I might try out this PS2 Saturn Pad since I do have a PS2 -> USB converter. Can anyone link me to one?

I'm also going to be trying out using a stick come Christmas time. Got myself a Hori EX-SE to try out with Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu and Ketsui.

Why is it dying ? In my experience controllers are rather easy to fix. Usually an internal clean up works wonders, changing plugs or cords is not hard either.
Anyway i always try to fix everything before changing it. More economical and ecological also I still have my 20+ years old genesis controllers and they still work fine. And they have been totally abused, yes they have !

I can help you fix it if you describe the problem.

Console and arcade games also have input lag. Emulation in some cases is worse in this regard, but this is not a rule.

It takes a very rare converter to use a Saturn pad on Xbox. You will probably pay well for one if you find one for sale.

Probably because it's a bootleg from eBay. I've heard reports of the dpad breaking off into the shell. This wouldn't happen with a real Saturn pad.

I still use the Mad Catz SF4 pad. I like it a lot.

For the 360/PC, I'm a fan of the same Horipad EX2 Turbo that Zaarock uses. I usually use a Hori Anashin 2 Turbo or Dualshock 1 for PS1/PS2 games. I've never quite been able to get comfortable with a stick for shoot'em ups, although I prefer them for fighting games.

I either use an original psx controller or a psx dual shock controller. I feel like I have the best control with them.

I just use a standard p2s pad for all my best runs. Rainbow Islands, SonSon, Pirate Shp Higamuru, Vulgus, Exed Exes, Cabal , Radical Radial. Its served me damn well.

You may not see them. I had it on my eBay watch list for years. I saw a few come up for sale. The last one I lost on went for 100+. You shouldn't have to pay that though. I got one from the shoryuken.com forums for $50-ish and another two from the neo-geo.com forums for around $40. Personally I'd recommend getting a Keio (Saturn to PS2) converter instead. That way you can also adapt your Saturn pad to the 360.

I tried using an ASCII Grip for shumps. I was terrible with it. I'm sure someone who was handicapped could adapt to it with enough practice.

I contacted Keio and he said that he ran out of Saturn extension cables so I'd have to pay an extra 10 britishbux to get a Saturn to anything adapter. Altogether that's kinda expensive.

I might do it through him anyways, that way I can get it to work on my 360. But for now a (probably bootleg, but hey everyone says they're decent bootlegs) USB Saturn pad should hold me out since I'm playing on PC mostly. Might get the Saturn->PSX and then PSX->360 setup from Keio (if I can afford it) around the time MMP/PS come out because that's when I'll go back to my 360.

And is there anywhere else to get old Saturn pads besides ebay, like an old retro shop or something? Or do they regularly go on sale on by members on SRK? (don't really see them here) The ones on ebay look nasty and beat up

Ill have to study how both are built but seems like a cool crazy project to me, especialy if i end up playing xbox with my saturn controller.

You're probably looking at $20-30 assuming you can come across one. They've since replaced the Saturn port with a Gamecube on the commercially available one.

I buy Saturn pads on eBay. They're usually $10-$15. My favorite are the clear skeleton pads. I've gotten a few of them from Japan.

I Sure like DIY And Whoa ! That is awesome I really like the concept My idea was along the same line but i hoped to do it without hurting any Saturn pad as I do not want to go in hell. Sacrificing a Saturn extension is bad enough.
Ideally i would like to use the Xbox controller itself as the project box while keeping it functional and have a Saturn port on the controller. Do not know yet if that will be possible but your project is sure to give me inspiration as well as a Plan B if i do not succeed. Just ordered the extension this morning, cant wait to start tinkering this stuff.

As for the HSS-0130, i guess i must be missing something by not playing with sticks, ill have to invest in a good product someday and give it a serious go. I want to get better at shmups, i really like them but I suck. I have a TurboStick for my PC-Engine but i dont like it. Tried The Nes Advantage also. I Dont like it. Those are not like the real arcade stick though, wich is what i should aim for.

I use a Gigaware PC gamepad that is a replica of a PS2 controller. Works really well since I don't play many games with the use of complex button combinations. I was considering getting an arcade stick but idk... If its mad cheap ill take it into consideration but I recently blew off a whole load of money on a 360 arcade stick. I'm curious on how to hook that up to a PC though, if possible.

Have fun with it. Tinkering is half the fun of any of this. If you don't want to hurt the poor Saturn pad then Toodles also makes a board that allows you to adapt Saturn controllers to other PCBs using an extension cable. It's a little more technical than hacking up a Saturn pad or buying a converter.
