Best homing laser?

Post by Drum »

Need to switch my brains off and let the game do the shooting for me, what is your prescription?

My list: Red curvy beam in Bio-Hazard Battle, purple toothpaste laser from Raiden II, Zig-Zagging red lasers from Dogyuun, and the green beams that turn on a dime from R-Type Leo.
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

Homing missiles in Slap Fight/ALCON.

Use the cheat to get them fast: don't shoot and let you first ship die. Re-spawn fully loaded.

Red lasers in Rayforce (though you still need to lock-on), blue laser in Truxton, Hunter shot in Thunderforce.

Not homing, but this one is my favorite:

The homing lasers of Minogame in Hellsinker. Fire and forget. Although you have to wait to release each payload and you still have the fact that you have to dodge all that wtfbbq danmaku.

Psycho Chaser, only because it always picks the most useless enemy on the screen to home onto. Every. Single. Time.

You're right.
The only time when it actually gets useful (almost sit-back-and-relax mode) is when you get the exclamation upgrade....

For me hands down the homing laser in Compile's Gunhed and Super Aleste - the combination of the laser weapon (III) and the (F) upgrade. All you need to do is dodge a bullet and here and there, but you can completely forget about aiming, the laser gets everything on it's own. I completed Gunhed this way (and hell, it's long).

and Ether Vapor's Lock-on

The Raiden MK-II's Plasma Lock-On beam needs more love. I can't pick between the Raiden II or DX (goes Green and Gold as AUSSIE colours), however.

I'm partial to the homing lasers fired by this capturable G-Darius enemy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uegmAw3_g8#t=2m16s

Raiden II's Purple Toothpaste is an easy pick. I'm particularly fond of any Taito Homing Laser, like the ones fired by enemies that are immediately recognizable from game to game.

The Raiden II laser doesn't even home you silly people. It has to connect before it locks on.

It homes, you just have to give it the address first! I'm counting anything you have to acquire targets for, so the Mk II, Rayforce and Soukyugurentai ships all count. Let's not be too fussy here - 'homing' is a term that all of these systems comfortably fall under. So nyah.

Q: What was the first homing beam (or any homing weapon) in a shooter? I know the heat-seeking laser from Thexder dates back to '85.

Dunno how Taito's related to Raiden (unless you're thinking RayStorm etc) but +1 anyway.

Good call. Compile's array of weapons are one of my favorite parts of their games.

I like how you can make your lazers in "Over Horizon" into homing ones. they work better at lvl 2 than they do a max lvl.

Ikaruga's homing lasers are pretty rad. And it gets even better if you're playing Prototype mode 8)
